About 20,000-25,000 chemical analyses of sedimentary rocks in the United States have been published. This report brings together 2,312 of these analyses from California and Hawaii. \r\n\r\nThe samples are arranged by general lithologic characteristics and locality. Indexes of stratigraphy, rock name, commercial uses, and minor elements are provided. \r\n\r\nThe sedimentary rocks are classified into groups and into categories according to the chemical analyses. The groups (A through F2) are defined by a system similar to that proposed by Brian Mason in 1952, in which the main parameters are the three major components of sedimentary rocks: (1) uncombined silica, (2) clay (R203 ? 3Si02 ? nH20), and (3) calcium-magnesium carbonate. The categories are based on the degree of admixture of these three major components with other components, such as sulfate, phos- phate, and iron oxide. Common-rock, mixed-rock, and special-rock categories apply to rocks consisting of 85 percent or more, 50-84 percent, and less than 49 percent, respectively, of the three major components combined. \r\n\r\nMaps show distribution of sample localities by States; triangular diagrams show the lithologic characteristics and classification groups. Cumulative-frequency curves of each constituent in each classification group of the common-rock and mixed-rock categories are also included. \r\n\r\nThe numerous analyses may not adequately represent the geochemical nature of the rock types and formations of the region because of sampling bias. Maps showing distribution of sample localities indicate that many of the localities are in areas where, for economic or other reasons, special problems attracted interest. \r\n\r\nMost of the analyzed rocks tended to be fairly simple in composition - mainly mixtures of just two of the three major components or a mixture of these and a fourth component such as phosphate, gypsum, or iron oxide.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/pp1097","usgsCitation":"Hill, T.P., 1981, Chemical composition of sedimentary rocks in California and Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1097, 145 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1097.","productDescription":"145 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124456,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1097/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54040,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1097/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e0e4b07f02db5e3ed1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hill, Thelma P. Only earthquakes located within the borders of the state of New York are listed. Many earthquakes actually located in Canada were felt in localities within New York and are listed in the literature as a New York event.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Downstream release dissolved-oxygen concentrations and temperatures also are computed based on a user-specified outflow withdrawal elevation. The model can, therefore, be used to compare top-draw versus bottom-draw outlet configuration effects on downstream dissolved-oxygen and temperature conditions.

The dissolved-oxygen and temperature profiles are computed for a conceptual vertical water column located at the deepest point in the lake or reservoir.. The water column is divided into a series of uniform thickness horizontal layers for computation purposes. The model operates on a daily simulation interval, with summary output given for each day and detailed depth profiles printed on user-specified days. Model options allow the simulation of 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, sediment oxygen demand, and the density current effects of inflowing suspended sediment.

The model is a modification of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's \"WESTEX\" model number 722-F5-E1011. The user-specified withdrawal elevation, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, sediment oxygen demand, and suspended sediment simulation capabilities were not present in the earlier \"WESTEX\" model. The model is capable of simulating a stratified reservoir pool environment.

This reservoir-lake model is most applicable to preliminary or reconnaissance studies of a proposed impoundment. The original model was formulated, developed and documented by the National Weather Service. This model is based on the complete flow equations and uses a nonlinear implicit finite-difference numerical method. The first phase of the simulation routes a flood wave through the reservoir and computes an outflow hydrograph which is the sum of the flow through the dam 's structures and the gradually developing breach. The second phase routes this outflow hydrograph through the stream which may be nonprismatic and have segments with subcritical or supercritical flow. The results are discharge and stage hydrographs at the dam as well as all of the computational nodes in the channel. From these hydrographs, peak discharge and stage profiles are tabulated. This information was used to construct and calibrate a five-layer, digital ground-water flow model. The model, constructed and calibrated to ground-water-level and seepage data collected during the study, simulates conditions for the autumn of 1976. The model was used to provide estimates of ground-water potential in terms of yield, drawdown, and depletion in streamflow.

Glacial drift covers nearly the entire study area and ranges in thickness from 0 to approximately 300 feet. Beneath the drift lie Ordovician to Devonian limestone, dolomite, and shale. A bedrock valley trends west-northwest through the center of the study area. Relief of the bedrock surface is approximately 325 feet.

Four confined sand and gravel aquifers interbedded in the glacial drift, a bedrock aquifer, and an unconfined outwash aquifer are the three most important aquifer systems in the study area. The nearly horizontal, areally discontinuous, confined sand and gravel aquifers have an average thickness of about 15 feet and an average hydraulic conductivity estimated to be 433 feet per day. The bedrock aquifer underlying the entire study area has a thick-ness estimated to be 150 feet and an average transmissivity estimated in previous studies in the basin to be 1,340 square feet per day. The unconfined outwash aquifer, although thin and narrow, is an important aquifer because of its proximity to sources of induced recharge.

Water-level fluctuations in observation wells in the basin indicate that the ground-water system is in dynamic equilibrium. Ground-water seepage to streams at 90-percent flow duration on October 1, 1976, was estimated to be between 15.9 and 74.4 cubic feet per second. Ground-water pumpage for 1976 was estimated to be 19.7 million gallons per day (30.5 cubic feet per second). The water budget, as simulated in the model, indicates that the rate of inflow to the ground-water system in the modeled area is 92.4 cubic feet per second. Of this, 78 percent is from effective areal recharge of precipitation, and 22 percent is from ground-water flow across the boundaries into the study area. Thirty-three percent of the ground-water outflow is pumpage, 59 percent is seepage to streams, and the remaining 8 percent is ground-water flow across the boundaries out of the study area.

Model simulations of eight pumping plans provide a general assessment of the water-yielding potential of the three major aquifer systems and indicate that as much as 2.5 million gallons per day can be obtained from well fields about half a square mile in area. Model results also indicate that, for as much as 2.5-million gallons per day pumping, flow in the large streams will not be significantly affected, whereas flow in the small streams may be significantly affected. In addition, simulations indicate that adding more wells to the well field northwest of Anderson, Ind., would probably be no more advantageous than increasing the pumpage in the existing wells. How-ever, well interference, well hydraulics, and pumping-level constraints were not considered in the investigation of alternative methods of expanding the well field. In developing the ground-water system in the area, use of many small, scattered well fields that produce less than about 3 million gallons per day may be more favorable hydrologically than a few, heavily pumped well fields.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8135","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources","usgsCitation":"Lapham, W.W., 1981, Ground-water resources of the White River basin, Madison County, Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 81-35, vii, 112 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8135.","productDescription":"vii, 112 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":346,"text":"Indiana Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":380151,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1981/0035/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159567,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1981/0035/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","county":"Madison","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-85.5784,40.3794],[-85.5763,40.0769],[-85.5774,39.9459],[-85.8624,39.9436],[-85.863,40.139],[-85.8617,40.2201],[-85.8621,40.3784],[-85.5784,40.3794]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Madison\",\"state\":\"IN\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db64931a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lapham, Wayne W.","contributorId":74734,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lapham","given":"Wayne","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199477,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Most of the information about subsurface conditions is obtained from wells along the coast. Ground water is recharged by local precipitation, and slow drainage of ground water to the streams maintains streamflow during winters and periods of no precipitation. Sedimentary bedrock of the Tertiary Kenai Group is the principal source of water to wells, but subsurface data are too sparse to differentiate individual aquifers within the bedrock. Most bedrock wells are completed in poorly consolidated sandstone. Glacial till overlies bedrock in much of the study area, but few wells obtain water from the poorly permeable till. Glacial outwash and abandoned-channel deposits in major drainageways of alluvial plains provide water to wells but are little utilized and have not been explored by drilling. Intermorainal valleys and areas of low relief are poorly drained , and bog deposits overlie surficial materials in parts of the area. Bog deposits contain highly colored, iron-rich water that is undesirable to most consumers. Lacustrine clays overlie and are interbedded with fluvial materials and contain little extractable water. Streams have incised older glacial sediments and deposited alluvium along the present flood plains. Where the alluvium is thick enough, it has good potential for providing ground water to high-capacity wells. However, production of ground water from alluvium or other deposits hydraulically connected to streams will reduce streamflow. Surficial deposits with the best potential for developing significant ground-water supplies in the study area are the deltaic complex near the mouth of Kasilof River, the alluvium of Crooked Creek, and abandoned-channel deposits in the alluvial plain near Ninilchik and in an ancestral drainageway of Tustumena Glacier south of Crooked Creek. The objectives of the proposed changes are protecting wetlands adjacent to the lakes in the pool and assuring adequate flow in the Fox River downstream from Lake Winnebago. Three proposed operation plans for the Winnebago pool were studied to determine the effects on lake stage and discharge. A digital reservoir model simulated daily lake stage and discharge from the Winnebago pool.
\n
Inflow for this simulation was computed from daily discharge, recorded at Rapide Croche Dam, and daily stage, recorded at Oshkosh. This computed inflow is net inflow, combining the effects of streamflow, precipitation, evaporation, and net ground-water inflow.
\n
The model was adapted to simulate operation of the Winnebago pool according to each of the proposed plans. Because the important features of each operation plan were expressed in terms of stages to be attained at certain dates, simulated discharge was adjusted daily to keep simulated lake stage close to that specified in the plan.
\n
The simulated lake stage for each of the proposed plans exceeded the allowable maximum in some years. However, the simulated stage exceeded the allowable maximum less frequently and for shorter periods than did the observed stage.
\n
For the 61 years simulated (water years 1918-78), the simulated 7-day, 10- year low flow ((57,10) at Rapide Croche Dam was 1,000 ft^/s compared with 900 ft^/s for the observed record. The 7-day, 2-year low flow (Qy 2) was 1,500 ft^/s (simulated) versus 1,600 ft3/s (observed).
\n
The model predicted that executing the proposed operation plan would result in monthly Q7 JQ for August and September of 1,100 ft-Vs. This is no change for August and a 12-percent increase for September.
\n
In addition, the study illustrated that the discharge from the Winnebago pool could be managed to guarantee that the discharge in the Fox River downstream would not fall below a specified discharge up to 1,500 ft^/s. In most years this would have no effect on the stage of the pool. In a few years there would be a conflict between releasing water from the pool to maintain the desired discharge and maintaining water levels above the required minimum stage. The frequency of this possible conflict varies with the level of discharge desired in the Fox River from 1 year in 60 for a discharge of 1,100 ft^/s to about 1 year in 15 for a discharge of 1,500 ft^/s.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri80107","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Fox Valley Water Quality Planning Agency","usgsCitation":"Krug, W.R., 1981, Hydrologic effects of proposed changes in management practices, Winnebago Pool, Wisconsin: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-107, iv, 19 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri80107.","productDescription":"iv, 19 p.","numberOfPages":"25","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":158637,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0107/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":56982,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0107/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","otherGeospatial":"Fox River, Lake Butte des Morts, Lake Poygan, Lake Winneconne, Lake Winnebago","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.2911376953125,\n              42.867912483915305\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.2911376953125,\n              44.70770622183535\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.57202148437499,\n              44.70770622183535\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.57202148437499,\n              42.867912483915305\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.2911376953125,\n              42.867912483915305\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1be4b07f02db606f7d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krug, William R.","contributorId":53381,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Krug","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199306,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Flood-frequency relations from analysis of recorded data were weighted or combined with flood-frequency relations from analysis of synthetic data to provide improved estimates of selected flood characteristics for 15 of these watersheds. The 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year peak discharges were regionalized using multiple-regression and station-year methods. Regression relations were developed to determine peak discharge from effective drainage area (standard error of estimate 30 to 50 percent) and flood volume from peak discharge (standard error of estimate 62 percent) for ungaged basins between 0.5 and 15 square miles in size. Using these two flood characteristics, a dimensionless hydrograph method provides synthetic hydrographs very similar in shape to recorded flood hydrographs. To meet this need a procedure was developed for predicting floodflow peaks, traveltimes, and volumes at any point along the Arkansas River between Portland and John Martin Reservoir without considering the existing Pueble Reservoir detention effects. A streamflow-routing model was calibrated initially and then typical flood simulations were made for the 164.8-mile study reach. Simulations were completed for varying magnitudes of floods and antecedent streamflow conditions. Multiple regression techniques were then used with simulation results as input to provide predictive relationships for food peak, volume, and traveltime. Management practices that may be used to benefit water users in the area include providing methods for the distribution and allotment of the flood waters upstream of Portland to different downstream water users according to Colorado water law and also under the Arkansas River Compact. This report analyzes variations in diel oxygen over the period April 1970 through January 1979. The diel oxygen range is used as an indicator of open-water metabolism. Polygons of temperature versus salinity portray the monthly variations of the two dominant environmental factors which influence biological metabolism and reveal effects of events such as a cool versus a warm spring or salinity reduction due to tropical storm freshwater runoff. Seasonally the average daily oxygen pulse range increased from a winter low of 1.6 mg/L to summer high of 5.3 mg/L. Annually highest daily ranges occurred the summer of 1972 when nutrient laden runoff from tropical storm Agnes stimulated open-water metabolism to produce an average diel range of 6.3 mg/L. Spearman 's ranked correlation coefficients were used to compare seasonal and annual variations in temperature and salinity versus diel oxygen range. There was high agreement between annual variations in spring temperatures and diel oxygen ranges and an inverse correlation between summer and autumn salinity and diel oxygen range.
