A wide seasonal range in temperature and strong orographic effects cause variations in the amount and distribution of precipitation, and thus in the resulting runoff and streamflow. Streamflow is lowest in winter, when precipitation at higher altitudes is stored as snow, and greatest in summer, when melting snow and glacier ice augment flow. Ground-water seeps and springs flowing from alluvial fans contribute to streamflow year round.</p><p>A ground-water discharge zone of particular interest is that along the toe of the Tsirku River alluvial fan, 20 miles north of Haines. During winter, the relatively warm (4 to 6 degrees Celsius) ground water maintains open leads in a reach of the Chilkat River downstream from the fan. This ice-free reach provides favorable spawning habitat for a late run of chum and coho (silver) salmon, which in turn attracts the world's largest concentration of bald eagles (more than 3,000 birds). The principal source of recharge to the ground-water system in the fan is loss of water through the beds of the many distributary channels across the fan surface.</p><p>Calculation of a water budget for the system for the period October 1982 through May 1983 indicates that ground-water discharge at the toe of the fan averages 640 cubic feet per second.</p><p>Surface and ground waters are chemically similar, calcium bicarbonate types. All stream samples had dissolved-solids concentrations of less than 115 milligrams per liter; values for ground water were slightly greater. The name \"Minturn\" was first applied to strata of Middle Pennsylvanian age near the town of Minturn in central Colorado (Tweto, 1949, p. 194-228; Tweto and Lovering, 1977, p. 33&ndash;53), about 180 km north of the section described, and has been extended to strata of approximately the same age that contain marine limestones in the northern Sangre de Cristo Range (Brill, 1952; Bolyard, 1959; Scott and Taylor, 1974). The Minturn reference section continues upward into the principal reference section of the overlying Pennsylvanian and Permian Sangre de Cristo Formation (Lindsey and Schaefer, 1984), and these two sections together provide a continuous record of upper Paleozoic strata in the northern Sangre de Cristo Range.</p>\n<p>The reference section was measured by tape and compass in the summer of 1980; observations were recorded on a microcassette tape recorder in the field and transcribed in the office. This method permitted rapid acquisition of data on thickness, mature of contacts, color, grain size, and sedimentary features. These data are shown on the graphic section for each distinct rock unit. The investigation was centered on the 18-square mile Camp Swift Military Reservation where a reported 80 to 100 million short tons of commercially mineable lignite occurs within 200 feet of the land surface.</p>\n<p>Monthly ground-water levels from a network of 22 wells showed that water levels in wells in the Hooper, Simsboro, and Calvert Bluff Formations of the Wilcox Group had slight and generally insignificant waterlevel changes from May 1980 to May 1981. The water quality in the Calvert Bluff Formation, which contains the lignite, and in the Simsboro Formation, which is the major aquifer beneath the Calvert Bluff, generally is satisfactory for most uses. Hydraulic pressures in the Calvert Bluff are greater than in the Simsboro, and this pressure differential results in the potential for downward movement of water from the Calvert Bluff to the Simsboro. However, confining beds of lignite, clay, silt, and other fine-grained material at and near the base of the Calvert Bluff greatly retard this interformational movement of water but do not totally prevent downward leakage.</p>\n<p>Data were collected from four streamflow stations and five automated rain gages to appraise the quantity and quality of the surface-water resources. Big Sandy Creek, which crosses Camp Swift, generally has a base flow of less than 0.5 cubic feet per second and infrequently is dry. Dogwood Creek, which originates on Camp Swift, normally is dry. The flow of both streams changes rapidly in response to rainfall in the watersheds. The quality of the water in both streams generally is suitable for most uses, but varies significantly in response to variations in discharge and related factors.</p>\n<p>Alithologic examination of 255 feet of cored section that represents the overburden and the included lignite showed cyclic layering of fine sand, silt, clay, and lignite. Chemical analyses of the core were performed to determine the contents of major inorganic and trace constituents. The minor aquifers include the Goose Egg and Park City Formations (considered in the Ten Sleep area to be the lateral equivalent of the Phosphoria Formation) and the Amsden Formation. Most wells completed in the major and minor aquifers flow at the land surface. Wellhead pressures generally are less than 50 pounds per square inch for the Tensleep Sandstone, to 150-250 pounds per square inch for the Madison-Bighorn aquifer, and more than 400 pounds per square inch for the Flathead Sandstone. Flowing wells completed in the Madison-Bighorn aquifer and Flathead Sandstone yield more than 1,000 gallons per minute. The initial test of one well completed in the Madison-Bighorn aquifer indicated a flow rate of 14,000 gallons per minute. Transmissivities range from 500 to 1,900 feet squared per day for the Madison-Bighorn aquifer and from about 90 to 325 feet squared per day for the Tensleep and Flathead Sandstones.</p><p>Significant secondary permeability from fracturing in the Paleozoic aquifers allows local upward interformational movement of water that affects the altitude of the potentiometric surfaces of the Tensleep Sandstone and Madison-Bighorn aquifer. Water moves upward from the Tensleep and other formations, through the Goose Egg Formation, to discharge at the land surface as springs. Much of the spring flow is diverted for irrigation or is used for rearing fish.</p><p>Decreases from original well pressures were not apparent in wells completed in the Tensleep Sandstone or in the Madison-Bighorn aquifer in the study area except for a few wells in or near the town of Ten Sleep. Most wells completed in the Flathead Sandstone, which also are open to the Madison-Bighorn aquifer, show a decrease of pressure from the time of completion to 1978. The decrease of pressure is partly the result of water moving from the Flathead Sandstone into the Madison-Bighorn aquifer, which has a lower potentiometric surface than does the Flathead Sandstone, even during the time the wells are not in operation. Pressure in some small-capacity wells completed in the Goose Egg Formation also has decreased near Ten Sleep. Most of the wells, particularly the irrigation wells, show a progressive decrease in pressure during the irrigation season but recover during periods of non-use. Measurements of the pressure were made principally in 1953, 1962, 1970, and 1975-78.</p><p>Well water from the Paleozoic aquifers generally contains minimal concentrations of dissolved solids and individual constituents, but excessive hardness. Dissolved-solids concentrations of water are less than 300 milligrams per liter in the Tensleep Sandstone and Madison-Bighorn aquifer, less than 200 milligrams per liter in the Flathead Sandstone, and as much as 450 milligrams per liter in the Goose Egg Formation. Bicarbonate is the major constituent, followed by calcium and magnesium. Relatively large concentrations of sulfate, as much as 200 milligrams per liter, were found mainly in water from the Goose Egg Formation. The water has low sodium (alkali) and medium salinity; therefore, the water is satisfactory for irrigation and most other uses, if excessive hardness is not a detrimental factor.</p><p>Wellhead temperatures range from 11° to 27.5° Celsius (51° to 81.5° Fahrenheit) within a range in depth of approximately 250 to 4,000 feet.
