Fluoride and selenium were the only chemical constituents found to exceed the National Interim Primary Drinking Water Regulations in water from some of the wells.
Unusually large silica concentrations in many of the water samples probably were due to the presence of amorphous silica in relatively young volcanic-ash deposits present in the aquifer. Because the greatest silica concentrations (as much as 65 milligrams per liter) occurred in the Northern part of the aquifer, the volcanic source was probably from the northwest.

Annual runoff from the individual streams ranged from 460 to 7,070 acre-feet, and discharges ranged from 0.2 to 110 cubic feet per second. During the 4 years, the five streams delivered 31,000 tons of sediment, which averaged about 75 percent gravel and sand, 15 percent silt, and 10 percent clay, to the lake. Annual quantities ranged from 1,500 to 11,000 tons; individual streams furnished 20 to 5,200 tons annually. Measured sediment transport at the stream mouths ranged from 1 to 13,200 milligrams per liter and from 0.001 to 1,420 tons per day; sediment concentrations up to 63,200 milligrams per liter were measured at upstream tributary sites.
Estimated annual sediment yields of principal drainage basins ranged from 3 to 930 tons per square mile from undeveloped areas and from 26 to 5,000 tons per square mile from developed areas; yields for developed areas appeared to average about 10 times those of undeveloped areas, and roadways apparently were the major source. Erosion disequilibrium caused by prestudy flash floods on two creeks continues to manifest itself through high natural sediment yields. The Second Creek flood of 1967 yielded about 75,000 tons in one afternoon.
Fluvial nutrient transport seems quantitatively related to magnitudes of sediment and water transport. Movement rates of organic nitrogen and particulate phosphorus were greater than rates of other nutrient species moving to the lake.

simulation of flow in singular and interconnected channels","docAbstract":"A one-dimensional numerical model is presented for simulating the unsteady flow in singular riverine or estuarine reaches and in networks of reaches composed of interconnected channels. The model is both general and flexible in that it can be used to simulate a wide range of flow conditions for various channel configurations. The channel geometry of the network to be modeled should be sufficiently simple so as to lend itself to characterization in one spatial dimension. The flow must be substantially homogenous in density, and hydrostatic pressure must prevail everywhere in the network channels. The slope of each channel bottom ought to be mild and reasonably constant over its length so that the flow remains subcritical. The model accommodates tributary inflows and diversions and includes the effects of wind shear on the water surface as a forcing function in the flow equations. Water-surface elevations and flow discharges are computed at channel junctions, as well as at specified intermediate locations within the network channels.\r\nThe one-dimensional branch-network flow model uses a four-point, implicit, finite-difference approximation of the unsteady-flow equations. The flow equations are linearized over a time step, and branch transformations are formulated that describe the relationship between the unknowns at the end points of the channels. The resultant matrix of branch-transformation equations and required boundary-condition equations is solved by Gaussian elimination using maximum pivot strategy.\r\nFive example applications of the flow model are illustrated. The applications cover such diverse conditions as a singular upland river reach in which unsteady flow results from hydropower regulations, coastal rivers composed of sequentially connected reaches subject to unsteady tide-driven flow, and a multiply connected network of channels whose flow is principally governed by wind tides and seiches in adjoining lakes.\r\nThe report includes a listing of the FORTRAN IV computer program and a description of the input data requirements. It is intended as a reference for those people dealing with coal-related hydrologic problems.
Published reports and reports in preparation at the time of this compilation are summarized in an annotated bibliography. The 4? reports in the annotated bibliography deal with many components of the hydrologic system. Most of the reports are interpretive in nature, but some contain only hydrologic data. The reports deal with such varied subjects as the magnitude and frequency of floods, availability of ground water, and hydrologic impacts of coal mining.
Seven hydrologic studies that are active in 1980 in Utah coal-resource areas are described. In addition to these seven, studies, that part of the Geological Survey statewide data-collection network in the vicinity of the major coal fields is described.
The hydrologic studies are conducted and reports prepared, for the most part, by personnel of the Water Resources Division, Utah District. tost of the studies and data-collection programs are in cooperation with other Federal, State, and local agencies. Utah Power and Light Co. provides stream- flow data collected at one gaging station.

The objectives of the study are to: (1) Determine premining hydrologic conditions in small representative drainage basins and provide historical data with which to compare the magnitude of changes resulting from mining, and (2) develop the capability of making reasonably accurate projections of hydrologic effects resulting from the various land-use changes caused by surface mining. Data collection has been underway since October 1976 for the West Branch Antelope Creek study area in western North Dakota and since March 1978 for the Hay Creek study area in eastern Montana. Data collected during the premining period are being analyzed using statistical methods for the evaluation of the premining conditions. A digitial model with the capability of making hydrologic projections is being developed. Most of the model components have been tested during 1979 and 1980.
