Increased groundwater withdrawals associated with the population increase in Island County have caused concern about groundwater availability and potential seawater intrusion. The most widely used aquifer lies near sea level. Locally, available data indicate that one or more water-bearing zones lie above the sea-level aquifer. Pumpage in 1979 was about 1.67 billion gallons, about 90% of which was pumped from the sea-level aquifer. Most large producing wells in the county have pumping water levels near or below sea level, so that if pumping continues for a long enough time, seawater intrusion would result. Chloride concentrations in water samples taken in July 1978, April 1980 and August 1980 indicate that seawater intrusion is occurring in northeastern and southern Camano Island and in central Whidbey island. This report, prepared in cooperation with the Western Kansas Groundwater Management District No. 1, presents the fifth in a series of studies that uses a statistical technique, called kriging, to produce hydrologic maps that are used as management tools. </p><p>Kriging is a statistical technique that was used to interpolate water level altitudes at the center of each 1-square-mile section in the study area based on measured water levels at 165 observation wells. These interpolation altitudes (1,859 in all), along with bedrock surface and base year water table altitudes, were used to prepare a geohydrologic map illustrating percentage change in saturated thickness. Saturated thickness, as used in this report, is the thickness of the High Plains aquifer between the groundwater surface indicated by water table altitudes and the bedrock surface. Because irrigation development in west-central Kansas was minimal prior to 1950, the saturated thickness during 1950 represented a nearly static condition in the aquifer. The map was prepared as part of the Western Gulf Coast Regional Aquifer-System Analysis study. The Pleistocene deposits in southern Louisiana consist of alternating beds of sand, gravel, silt, and clay deposited under fluvial, deltaic, and near-short marine conditions. The aquifers are mainly under artesian conditions and the regional flow direction is primarily southward. Areally definable cones of depression result from heavy pumpage in the Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, and New Orleans metropolitan areas and in the rice irrigation area of southwestern Louisiana. Where water levels differ vertically within the aquifer, the lowest water levels in the vertical section were used because these levels represented the thickest and most heavily pumped unit in the aquifer. The map represents regional water levels in the Pleistocene aquifers, and is not intended to show localized variations near pumping centers. The Evangeline and equivalent aquifers increase in thickness from zero at the northern edge of the outcrop/subcrop belt to more than 2,000 feet along the southern limit of fresh water. The aquifers are recharged by rainfall on the overlying upland terrace deposits of south-central Louisiana, southeastern Louisiana, and southwestern Mississippi. The aquifers are under artesian conditions except locally in the recharge areas. The regional flow direction is primarily southward. Water levels in wells in the Evangeline aquifer are lowered by heavy pumping from the overlying Chicot aquifer in Evangeline and Acadia Parishes. Areally definable cones of depression result from pumpage from the Evangeline and equivalent aquifers in and near Baton Rouge, Eunice, and Ville Platte. Water levels may differ vertically within the aquifer near pumping centers. This development increased the lake shoreline, altered surface water flow to and from the lake, and may have affected lake-stage characteristics. Some areas of the lake were dredged to provide fill material for lakefront property. Water-balance analyses for 1952-60, a predevelopment period, and 1961-80, a period of residential development, indicate that both net surface water flow to the lake and downward leakage from the lake to the Floridan aquifer were greater after 1960. These changes were due more to changes in the regional climate and related changes in ground-water levels than to changes associated with residential development. All the stream-gages were identified as having sufficient reason to continue their operation and they should be maintained in the program for the foreseeable future. The maps show: (1) location of wells and test holes; (2) bedrock topography; (3) surficial geology and geologic sections; (4) saturated thickness of the confined aquifer; (5) generalized soil permeability; and (6) land use. The aquifers in the Clifton Park area serve approximately 22,000 people through 32 public distribution systems. Average daily pumpage from these systems is approximately 1.85 million gallons per day. The most productive aquifer is the Colonie Channel aquifer, a confined, buried bedrock channel aquifer of glacial material from which wells may yield more than 500 gallons per minute. A water-table aquifer of fine sand is present over most of the area and is separated from the confined aquifer by a thick sequence of lacustrine silt and clay. Recharge to the confined aquifer occurs primarily where kame-delta deposits that are exposed at land surface are hydraulically connected to the buried aquifer. Saturated thickness of the confined aquifer varies from less than 5 feet to approximately 70 feet. In recharge areas, where the aquifer is locally under water-table conditions, saturated thickness may exceed 100 feet. Pumping interference between wells tapping the confined aquifer has been observed over distances of 3/4 mile. The data were collected in support of the water-quality and hydrologic investigation components of the Truckee-Carson River-Quality Assessment by the U.S. Geological Survey. This report contains data from: (1) diel and antecedent measurements made in conjunction with four synoptic water-quality studies, (2) analyses of phytoplankton samples to supplement other biological data collected during the synoptic studies, (3) an investigation of surface and intragravel water quality to determine the suitability of the river as a spawning habitat for Lahontan cutthroat trout, (4) 10 water-temperature recorders, (5) 11 dye-tracer studies, (6) 5 gas-tracer reaeration studies, (7) summaries of dye-tracer travel times derived from the dye and reaeration studies, and (8) discharge measurements with associated channel-geometry descriptions at 46 miscellaneous sites on the river, selected tributaries, and the canal. Leviathan Creek was chosen because it receives acid mine drainage from Leviathan Mine, an abandoned open-pit sulfur mine. Water samples were collected at 15 sites along a 4.39 kilometer reach and analyzed for chloride, sodium, sulfate and fluoride. Dissolved concentrations are presented in tabular format and time-series plots. Duplicate samples were analyzed by two laboratories: the Central Laboratory, Denver, Colorado and a research laboratory in Menlo Park, California. A tabular comparison of the analyses and plots of the differences between the two laboratories is presented. Hydrographs and instantaneous discharge measurements are included.
