The data were collected in support of the water-quality and hydrologic investigation components of the Truckee-Carson River-Quality Assessment by the U.S. Geological Survey. This report contains data from: (1) diel and antecedent measurements made in conjunction with four synoptic water-quality studies, (2) analyses of phytoplankton samples to supplement other biological data collected during the synoptic studies, (3) an investigation of surface and intragravel water quality to determine the suitability of the river as a spawning habitat for Lahontan cutthroat trout, (4) 10 water-temperature recorders, (5) 11 dye-tracer studies, (6) 5 gas-tracer reaeration studies, (7) summaries of dye-tracer travel times derived from the dye and reaeration studies, and (8) discharge measurements with associated channel-geometry descriptions at 46 miscellaneous sites on the river, selected tributaries, and the canal. Leviathan Creek was chosen because it receives acid mine drainage from Leviathan Mine, an abandoned open-pit sulfur mine. Water samples were collected at 15 sites along a 4.39 kilometer reach and analyzed for chloride, sodium, sulfate and fluoride. Dissolved concentrations are presented in tabular format and time-series plots. Duplicate samples were analyzed by two laboratories: the Central Laboratory, Denver, Colorado and a research laboratory in Menlo Park, California. A tabular comparison of the analyses and plots of the differences between the two laboratories is presented. Hydrographs and instantaneous discharge measurements are included. Access is by way of the Al Madihah &ndash; Ha&rsquo;il paved highway to Hulayfah or Gazzalah, thence by unimproved road to Zarghat, located a few km from the eastern margin and the southeast corner of the quadrangle. Desert tracks lead from Zarghat to the remainder of the area, but a large part of the quadrangle is underlain by the Tertiary and Quaternary Harrat Ithnayn; access over this terrain by vehicle is difficult.</p>\n<p>The area has low relief, marked only by Paleozoic sandstone remnants, volcanic cones in the harrat, and Jabal Bushra. Drainage on the harrat trends generally northerly, but rainfall is low. The climate is typical of inland Saudi Arabia, with summer day temperatures reaching 45-50&deg;C, and with cold nights. Temperatures can reach 0&deg;C in winter. Heavy mineral studies of two other drill cores indicate that the deposit is enriched in rare earths. The principal rare earth minerals are bastnaesite and doverite; other rare earth minerals include monazite and synchisite. Niobium occurs in pyrochlore; zirconium is present in zircon. Thorium is found principally in thorite and secondarily in thorianite. Autoradiographs show the distribution and relative sizes of several radioactive minerals.</p>\n<p>Microprobe studies of grains of eight different minerals indicated that significant elemental substitution took place in most of them. The rare earth metals cerium and lanthanum occur in significant amounts in pyrochlore; yttrium is abundant in doverite and is also present in bastnaesite, thorite, and zircon. Niobium substitutes for titanium in anatase and brookite, and some tantalum occurs with the niobium in pyrochlore. Minor amounts of thorium are found in bastnaesite, doverite, and zircon. Small amounts of uranium mostly occur with the thorium in thorite. Tin minerals were not found in any of the samples, but small and variable amounts of this element occur in bastnaesite, doverite, hematite, and zircon.</p>\n<p>The potential ore minerals in the apogranite commonly occur along the grain boundaries of the larger quartz and feldspar.
