Prior to 1972, the treated wastes were released to surface drainage features. An electromagnetic survey for ground conductivity was made to identify changes in the ground conductivity that may be due to the spray irrigation disposal operations. Water samples from four test wells drilled into the surficial aquifer and the two disposal ponds and bottom material from the ponds were analyzed for priority and nonpriority pollutants, total organic carbon, volatile organic carbon, herbicides, insecticides, trace metals, nutrients, and major constituents. Overall, concentrations of constituents in the water samples were (1) less than the detection limits, (2) within U.S. Environmental Protection Agency quality criteria for water, or (3) within the range of results for a designated background water-quality site. Concentrations of 12 priority pollutants were found to be considerably above detection limits. Concentrations of these compounds, mostly coal-tar derivatives, ranged from 220 to 5,500 micrograms per kilogram; the detection limit for these compounds is 10 micrograms per kilogram. Included in these compounds were anthracene, pyrenes, and chrysene.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri854062","usgsCitation":"Fernandez, M., 1985, Reconnaissance of water quality at a U.S. Department of Energy site, Pinellas County, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 85-4062, iv, 49 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri854062.","productDescription":"iv, 49 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":410118,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36242.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":55933,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4062/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158862,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4062/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","county":"Pinellas County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.725,\n              27.896\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.725,\n              27.85\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.767,\n              27.85\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.767,\n              27.896\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.725,\n              27.896\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a62e4b07f02db6369ca","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fernandez, Mario","contributorId":100846,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fernandez","given":"Mario","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197485,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Proterozoic basement of the quadrangle may be broadly divided into the older (circa 650 Ma and older) Laban dioritic complex in the east and the younger (to possibly coeval) Kilab monzogranite batholith in the west. The dioritic complex is overlain by a monoclinal section of mostly intermediate composition volcanic and sedimentary rocks in the southeast (the Hibshi formation - dated at circa 632 Ma). The source plutons for the Hibshi volcanic rocks are not well constrained; the volcanics may be comagmatic with late phases of the Kilab batholith. All of these rocks are intruded by a younger (post-orogenic and circa 600 Ma) suite of more evolved granitic plutons and dikes. Several of these evolved granites may represent the root-zones of volcanic caldera complexes.
\n
The Hibshi formation is divided into several members that are described in detail based on data from measured sections at the type section (Jibal Hibshi). There is considerable variation in composition and facies within the formation; individual members thicken and thin laterally, and some pinch out entirely over distances of only a few kilometers. Volcanic members at Jabal Hibshi are mostly andesitic to dacitic pyroclastic rocks, but at Jabal Aba al Liqah, basaltic and rhyolitic flow rocks predominate. The Hibshi formation consists of clastic sediments of volcanic and plutonic provenance intertonguing with the varied products of multiple subaerial volcanic centers. For these reasons, regional correlation based only on lithology is discouraged.
\n
The Harrat Hutaymah basalt field contains abundant basaltic tephra as well as alkali olivine basalt flows. Tuff rings formed by explosive eruptions above mantle diatremes. Peridotite nodules are common in the basaltic tuff and in some flow rocks. Basaltic volcanism in the region began at a later time (circa 1.8 Ma) than at the other Saudi Arabian harrats; probably due to progressive mantle underflow related to Red Sea rifting.
\n
Areas having mineral resource potential include the ancient Samirah gold mine, a quartz-vein deposit in Laban complex dioritic rocks, and areas with tin-tungsten potential in the evolved plutons. Aggregate and pozzolan deposits occur in the basaltic tephra of the Harrat Hutaymah volcanic field and unusually deep groundwater reservoirs are present in the filled tuff-ring craters of the volcanic field.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr85125","usgsCitation":"Pallister, J., 1985, Reconnaissance geology of the Harrat Hutaymah Quadrangle, sheet 26/42A, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-125, iv, 82 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr85125.","productDescription":"iv, 82 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":38437,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0125/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38438,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0125/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38439,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0125/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143030,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0125/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              42,\n              26\n            ],\n            [\n              42,\n              27\n            ],\n            [\n              43,\n              27\n            ],\n            [\n              43,\n              26\n            ],\n            [\n              42,\n              26\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640f93","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pallister, J.S.","contributorId":46534,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pallister","given":"J.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161659,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Samples were collected along one traverse away from the mineralized zones, across the northeast-plunging antiform that constitutes the dominant regional structure of the area, and along another traverse down the axis of the mineralized zones. Lithologies range from andesite flows through andesitic to rhyodacitic tuffs, lapilli tuffs, and volcaniclastic sediments. Measurements of remanent magnetization direction and intensity before and after stepwise alternating-field demagnetization ranging from 25 Oersted (Oe) to 1000 Oe were carried out on all samples. Three classes of demagnetization behavior were observed: A very stable class with little change in direction and intensity of magnetization; a class in which rapid changes were observed at first but which then settled on a high coercivity stable component of magnetization; and a class in which the magnetization was composed of a spectrum of low coervicity components, and continuous variation of direction and intensity of magnetization occurred.
\n
A structural correction restoring the bedding to horizontal resulted in a significant reduction in dispersion of magnetization directions, and implies that the magnetization was acquired before the northeast-trending deformation. At least one geomagnetic reversal is recorded and, together with drillhole electric logs, suggests structural repetition of some parts of the area.
\n
The determined paleopole location, after correction for Tertiary rotation of Arabia from Africa, falls on the apparent polar wander path for Gondwanaland at an age of 600-590 Ma, which is younger than the mineralization age of about 680 Ma and the age of the Mahd group of rocks (772 Ma) determined from geochronologic studies, and implies that the rocks have been remagnetized during the middle Pan African times.
\n
The results of this work suggest that more extensive paleomagnetic investigations of the felsic volcanic and volcanic-derived rocks of the northern Arabian shield should provide greater insight into the structural evolution of the shield, and these investigations are recommended.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr8515","usgsCitation":"Gettings, M.E., 1985, Paleomagnetic investigations at Mahd adh Dhahab, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-15, i, 43 p., ill., map: 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8515.","productDescription":"i, 43 p., ill., map: 28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":36730,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0015/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141616,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0015/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 40,\n 23\n ],\n [\n 40,\n 24\n ],\n [\n 41,\n 24\n ],\n [\n 41,\n 23\n ],\n [\n 40,\n 23\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db689c3b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gettings, M. Comenditic ash-flow tuffs, the oldest recognized rocks of the caldera complex, were erupted during caldera collapse associated with the rapid evacuation of the upper, mildly peralkaline part of a zoned magma reservoir. Within the tuff sequence, a massive, lithic-rich intracaldera tuff containing megabreccia blocks is overlain by a layered ash-flow sequence. Later peralkaline granite intruded the caldera ring fracture zone. Metaluminous to peraluminous magma rose beneath the caldera approximately 580 Ma ago and solidified as biotite alkali-feldspar granite, syenogranite, and granophyre. A cataclastically foliated syenogranite, the oldest rock exposed in the quadrangle, crops out in a restricted area in the south-central part of the quadrangle. Younger, weakly metamorphosed metarhyolite and minor metabasalt, arkosic sandstone, and conglomerate crop out north of the syenogranite and are correlated with lithologically similar rocks exposed to the south that comprise the Hadn formation. Most of the intrusive rocks in the quadrangle are peralkaline or have a peralkaline affinity and are characterized by the presence of soda pyriboles. A large mountain known as Jibal Aja extends into the southeast corner of the quadrangle and is composed of postorogenic peralkaline alkali granite plutons that form concentric rings around a core granophyre. The plutons are highly fractionated, leucocratic granitoids assigned to a major magmatic pulse that spanned the later stages of the Hijaz orogeny (about 610 Ma to about 550 Ma). Most of the targeted plutons are small or not deeply eroded. Two rock types are dominant: subsolvus, muscovite-bearing monzogranite or syenogranite; and hypersolvus, mieroeline perthite granite commonly containing sodic pyriboles. Enrichment in varied suites of the granitophile elements (Sn-W-NbTa-Zr-Y-Th-U) is characteristic. The plutons occupy the central part of a broad arcuate belt of geochemically specialized plutons that conforms generally to the eastern limit of exposed Proterozoic basement.
\n
The muscovite-bearing monzogranites containing anomalous tin and tungsten in rock and (or) wadi sediment samples occur generally east of long 42°30' E. Two of these, Jabal Minya and Jabal Khinzir, are recommended for immediate follow-up studies. Of the alkali granites, most of which occur in the area west of long 42°30' E., the composite plutons of Jabal Hadb ad Dayahin and Jabal Tuqfah have the highest potential for rare-element mineralization and warrant prompt systematic investigation. Data in each volume consist of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams and canals; and stage, contents, and water quality of lakes and reservoirs. Also included are crest-stage and flood-hydrograph partial-record stations, reconnaissance partial-record stations, and low-flow partial-record stations. Additional water data were collected at various sites, not part of the systematic data collection program, and are published as miscellaneous measurements. Records for a few pertinent stations in bordering States are also included. Data were obtained chiefly from private consulting firms and from government agencies. Hydraulic properties determined included transmissivity, storage coefficient (where observation well was available), and in some cases hydraulic properties of a confining layer. The aquifers tested comprised three main types of rocks--consolidated rock deposits, glacial deposits, and alluvial deposits that include the ' Equus beds, ' an extensive alluvial deposit in south-central Kansas. The Theis recovery equation and the Cooper-Jacob modified nonequilibrium equation were the two principal solution methods used. Other methods used included the Theis nonequilibrium equation, the Hantush-Jacob equation for a leaky confined aquifer, Hantush 's modified leaky equation in which storage from a confining layer was considered, the Boulton 's delayed-yield equation. Additionally, a specific-capacity method of estimating transmissivity was used when only a single drawdown value was available.
