The quadrangle is located between lat 20°00'N. and 20°30'N. and long 43°00'E. and 43°30'E. It is underlain by volcanic, volcaniclastic, and plutonic rocks of late Precambrian age. Most of the quadrangle consists of a large, asymmetric gneiss dome that extends far to the north and south of the quadrangle. Parallel with the eastern border of the quadrangle, part of the extensive, serpentinite-bearing, Nabitah fault zone probably represents a major suture between crust of Jiddah age to the west and younger crust of Halaban age to the east.</p><p>An excellent section of the Halaban-age crust is exposed in and adjacent to the gneiss dome. At the eroded top of the section to the east, calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of the Halaban group are dominantly andesite but range from basalt to dacite. Beneath the volcanic rocks, comagmatic, subvolcanic plutonic rocks include predominantly diorites but range from gabbro to trondhjemite. These rocks were formed during island-arc volcanism and plutonism from about 780 m.y. to 720(?) m.y. ago. About 725 m.y. ago this primitive crust was thickened by emplacement of large intermediate-crustal depth plutons of hornblende tonalite and hornblende granodiorite. Compressional tectonism produced folds and faults with northern trends and accompanying greenschist metamorphism.</p><p>Granitic plutonism began 625 m.y. ago, perhaps in response to a major continental collision between the Halaban crust and a continental mass to the east. Granodiorite-monzogranite comprising the Wadi Musayrah batholith formed the core of the Jabal al Qarah gneiss dome as the dome rose. The low-density, intermediate-depth, plutonic rocks of the Halaban crust were converted to orthogneisses as they rose. Strong compression resulted in a large west-directed thrust, the Nabitah fault zone, containing serpentinite. Subsequently, plutons of monzogranite, syenogranite, and alkali-feldspar granite intruded the eroding crust at progressively shallower levels until about 600 m.y. ago. After this time the polymictic conglomerate of the Murdama group was deposited over the youngest granite--the alkali-feldspar granite at Jabal ash Shawhatah al Hamrah; the conglomerate was subsequently deformed.</p><p>Continued compression of the now relatively thick continental crust resulted in the Najd faulting event about 570 m.y. ago. Two northwest-trending faults in the quadrangle have left-lateral displacement; one has 7 km of offset. These two faults are small but are characteristic of the large Najd fault zones farther north. Throughout the quadrangle, northwest-trending Najd fracturing was pervasive and many of these secondary fractures were filled with diabase dikes of Najd age. The diabase dikes and the deeper, non-exposed mafic plutons induced small-scale, but widespread hydrothermal convection and alteration that produced small quartz veins locally mineralized with gold. Quartz-vein gold was mined on a small scale by ancient miners in several areas. An extensive gold placer was worked about 2,600 years ago in a 50 km<sup>2</sup> area at Jabal Mokhyat. Management of grassland habitats on a sound ecological basis is an important wildlife management activity in the region. The primary purpose of the guidelines in this publication is to help managers establish and maintain good stands of seeded cover for waterfowl nesting and use by other prairie wildlife. Several options are available for selecting a type of cover to be established. The following seeded grassland types are described: (1) introduced cool-season grasses and legumes; (2) tall, warm-season native grasses; and (3) mixed-grass prairie grasses. Major vegetative species recommended for (1) are tall wheatgrass (Agropyron elongatum), intermediate wheatgrass (A. intermedium), alfalfa (Medicago sativa), and sweetclover (Melilotus spp.); for (2) are big bluestem (Andropogon gerardi), indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans), and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum); for (3) are green needlegrass (Stipa viridula), little bluestem (Andropogon scoparius), western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii), and sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula). Important factors that affect the success of establishment of seeded grasslands include site adaptability, site preparation, seedbed preparation, planting equipment and methods, rates and dates of seeding, and seed sources. A management goal for seeded grasslands intended to provide optimum habitat for dabbling duck nesting should be to maintain vigorous stands of vegetation with the tallest, most dense cover form that is possible under prevailing soil and climatic conditions. Grassland management is a never-ending job and seeded grasslands require periodic rejuvenation to maintain them in an optimum condition. Prescribed burning and planned grazing systems are acceptable methods for periodically rejuvenating seeded native grasses. Stands of introduced grasses and legumes are best maintained by mechanical tillages; reseeding is often necessary after 1 or 2 years of grain farming. The need for good management of all areas dedicated to wildlife habitat is emphasized by the rate of destruction and degradation of grassland habitats. D'ITRI et al. (1971) reported higher levels of mercury in trout from oligotrophic waters than in trout from eutrophic waters in unpolluted areas. They attributed part of the difference to differences in the food of the fish in the two types of waters. Position on the trophic scale is an important factor determining the degree of bioaccumulation of mercury by aquatic organisms, especially fish. </p><p>Elevated mercury levels have been reported in fish from three wilderness lakes in northern Maine (NORMANDEAU ASSOCIATES 1978). Concentrations exceeding 0.50 ~g/g were detected in the muscle tissue of many of the fish. </p><p>We report the levels of mercury in the muscle tissue of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and lake trout (S. namaycush) from three northern Maine lakes. Mercury levels in fish from two wilderness lakes in the same drainage basin were compared with each other, and in turn with those in fish from a lake in a separate drainage basin. The fish species composition in one of the wilderness lakes, Cliff Lake, is different from that in the other two lakes, enabling us to analyze the effects of trophic structure on mercury concentration in top carnivores. Record numbers of pink salmon were observed during the 1979 spawning migrations into Lake Superior tributaries. Although the species was introduced into Lake Superior 24 years ago, movement into the other lakes was slow and until 1979 the known range was restricted to northern portions of Lakes Michigan and Huron. Pink salmon remain the only self-sustaining species of salmon in the Great Lakes. The development of spawning populations in both even- and odd-numbered years and other adaptive biological features may have contributed to their All plants were mycorrhizal. Six species of vesicular–arbuscular (VA) fungi occurred in association with these plants, with&nbsp;</span><i>Gigaspora gigantea</i><span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</span><i>Acaulospora scrobiculata</i><span>&nbsp;the most abundant. Also present were&nbsp;</span><i>Gigaspora calospora</i><span>,&nbsp;</span><i>Glomus etunicatus</i><span>,&nbsp;</span><i>Glomus fasciculatus</i><span>, and an undescribed species of&nbsp;</span><i>Gigaspora</i><span>. Spore densities and frequencies were measured in a transect across the dune and were compared with plant cover and physical factors (pH, soil moisture, organic matter, soil nutrients, chlorides, and sand grain size). Areas on the dune with greatest vegetation cover by&nbsp;</span><i>Ammophila</i><span>&nbsp;were associated with greatest spore densities and fungal diversity in the rhizosphere. For most plant species, maximum spore density occurred in the front half of the plant's distribution range, nearest the dune crest. There was little correlation between spore populations in the soil and physical characteristics, with the exception of sand grain size. Both the percentage bird loss (PBL) and the percentage of bunches damaged (BDI = bird damage incidence) were determined during 55 total-damage assessments, and the resulting data pairs were used to develop a regression of PBL on BDI. The final prediction equation was loge (PBL + 1) = 0.0385 BDI, for which the SE = 9.6297 10-4, and it accounted for 97% of the observed variation. We conclude that by using that equation, reasonably accurate predictions of PBL can be obtained from relatively quick and inexpensive estimates of BDI. Although all three species were housed together, morbidity and mortality were confined to the 227 black ducks and Canada geese, of which 180 died and the rest were left in a weakened condition. Lesions are given for 20 black ducks and 4 Canada geese dying from DVE. When death of test mice unprotected with type specific antitoxin (while protected controls survived) was the criterion, 78.8% of the sera and 5.3% of the fecal extracts were positive. When characteristic signs of intoxication in the unprotected mice was included as evidence of toxin in the specimens, these percentages increased to 86.7 and 6.2, respectively.</p><p class=\"last\">Fecal specimens were collected hourly for the first 6 h after peroral dosing of eight mallards (<i>Anas platyrhynchos</i>) with 1.0 LD<sub>50</sub>, of type C toxin and at 24, 48, and 72 h from birds surviving that long. From 2 to 4 toxin-positive specimens were passed by all eight ducks during the first 6 h, five specimens were positive at 24 h, and three were positive at 48 h. Only three specimens were collected at 72 h, all of which were negative. These findings suggest that attempts to detect toxin in the feces of wild ducks might have been more successful had the birds been captured earlier in the course of the
