Seepage rates were determined for losing and gaining reaches, and reaches affected by pumping of ground water. The seepage rates were computed for stream surcharges (height of additional water applied on top of base flow) ranging from 0.5 foot to 3 feet and for application periods ranging from 1 to 100 days. The net seepage rates, which were nearly identical for each type of reach, ranged from 0.0 cubic foot per second per mile of channel length for a 0.5 foot surcharge applied for 1 day to 0.37 cubic foot per second per mile of channel length for a 3 feet surcharge applied for 100 days, followed by a 180 day seepage return flow from the aquifer. About 90 gas fields are present in the Burgos basin, which has undergone active exploration for the past 30-40 years. Production in this basin is from Oligocene and Eocene nearshore marine and deltaic sandstone reservoirs. Most of the fields are small to medium in size on faulted anticlinal or domal structures, some of which may be related to deep-seated salt intrusion. Cumulative production from these fields is about 4 trillion cubic feet gas and 100 million barrels condensate and oil. Since 1975, about 10 gas fields, some with large production rates, have been discovered in Cretaceous carbonate and Jurassic sandstone reservoirs in the Sabinas basin and adjacent Burro-Picachos platform areas. The Sabinas basin, which is in the early stages of exploration and development, may have potential for very large gas reserves. \r\n\r\nThe Sabinas basin is oriented northwesterly with a large number of elongate northwest- or west-trending asymmetric and overturned Laramide anticlines, most of which-are faulted. Some of the structures may be related to movement of Jurassic salt or gypsum. Lower Cretaceous and in some cases Jurassic rocks are exposed in the centers of the larger anticlines, and Upper Cretaceous rocks are exposed in much of the remainder of the basin. A thick section of Upper Cretaceous clastic rocks is partly exposed in tightly folded and thrust-faulted structures of the west-east oriented, deeply subsided Parras basin, which lies south of the Sabinas basin and north of the Sierra Madre Oriental fold and thrust belt south and west of Monterrey. \r\n\r\nThe sedimentary cover of Cretaceous and Jurassic rocks in the Sabinas and Parras basins ranges from about 1,550 m (5,000 ft) to 9,000 m (30,000 ft) in thickness. Upper Jurassic rocks are composed of carbonate and dark organic shaly or sandy beds underlain by an unknown thickness of Late Jurassic and older redbed clastics and evaporites, including halite. Lower Cretaceous rocks are mainly platform carbonate and fine clastic beds with some evaporites (gypsum or anhydrite) deposited in two main rudist reef-bearing carbonate cycles. Upper Cretaceous rocks are mainly continental and marine clastic beds related to early development of the Laramide orogeny. This Upper Cretaceous sequence contains a marine shale and deltaic clastic complex as much as 6,000 m (20,000 ft) or more thick in the Parras basin, which grades northward and eastward to open marine, fine clastic beds. The Burgos basin, which is an extension of the Rio Grande embayment of the western Gulf of Mexico basin province, contains an eastward-thickening wedge of Tertiary continental and marine clastics. These beds are about 1,550 to 3,000 m (5,000-10,000 ft) thick in the outcrop belt on the west side of the basin and thicken to more than 16,000 m (50,000 ft) near the Gulf Coast.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/cir943","usgsCitation":"Peterson, J.A., 1985, Petroleum geology and resources of northeastern Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 943, vi, 30 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir943.","productDescription":"vi, 30 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124747,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1985/0943/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30595,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1985/0943/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a91e4b07f02db65697c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peterson, James A.","contributorId":106872,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterson","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147167,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

During the past 20 to 30 years, concentrations of nitrate (as nitrogen) in the Widefield aquifer have increased from 0.5 to 3.0 milligrams/L to nearly 10 milligrams/L, and occasionally exceed the drinking-water standard of 10 milligrams/L as nitrogen. During the summer of 1982, the concentrations of nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen in water in the aquifer ranged from 3.2 to 15 milligrams/L with a mean concentration of 6.9 milligrams/L. In general, the nitrite-plus-nitrate concentrations are greatest near the north end of the aquifer, probably resulting from effluent from Colorado Springs Sewage Treatment Plant being discharged to Fountain Creek. During 1982, 93% of the total estimated 160 tons of nitrogen available to enter the Widefield aquifer was from the Colorado Springs Sewage Treatment Plant. Two of the units, the Mesozoic-Paleozoic and the John Day-Clarno aquifers, are low-permeability aquifers, have hydraulic conductivities generally less than 1 ft/d (feet per day), and are generally capable of yielding only a few gallons per minute to wells. These are important aquifer units, nevertheless, because they are the only economical source of domestic water present in east-central Oregon where they outcrop. Four of the aquifer units contain beds or zones of high permeability materials with hydraulic conductivities that commonly range between 5 and 50 ft/d. In many localities where these units are present, they are capable of yielding 200 gallons/min or more to wells. These productive aquifer units are the Columbia River Basalt, the Cenozoic volcanic and sedimentary , Cenozoic sedimentary, and the Quaternary sediment aquifers, respectively. North of the Blue Mountains, the Columbia River Basalt aquifer is a major aquifer of regional extent and, in that area, heavy withdrawals, chiefly for irrigation, have resulted in regional groundwater level declines. South of the Blue Mountains, the basalt underlies rugged terrane, is not developed, and little is known about its hydraulic properties. Other major aquifer units are heavily developed in localized areas or in basins throughout eastern Oregon. Experiments on the street surface showed that higher intensity simulated rainfall produced a higher percentage of runoff than lower intensity rainfall, and a first flush of constituent loads occurred for most constituents. The event mean constituent concentrations in the street-surface runoff from simulated storms were generally much smaller than those in the runoff from an adjacent urban basin. Simulated rainfall in small native pasture plots produced runoff-to-rainfall ratios similar to runoff-to-rainfall ratios from a larger native pasture subject to natural rainfall. Aquifer test data were analyzed to determine transmissivity, storage coefficient, leakance, and vertical hydraulic conductivity of the aquifers and confining beds. Transmissivities obtained from 29 aquifer tests range from 1,900 to 920,000 feet squared per day for parts of the Floridan aquifer, about 740 to 7,800 feet squared per day for the intermediate aquifer, and about 220 to 600 feet squared per day for the surficial aquifer. Storage coefficients obtained from aquifer tests range from 0.00013 to 0.0015 for the Floridan aquifer, 0.00005 to 0.00017 for the intermediate aquifer, and 0.004 to 0.02 for the surficial aquifer. The values of leakance obtained from aquifer tests range from 0.00005 to 0.009 feet per day per foot for the Floridan and 0.0002 to 0.0007 feet per day per foot for the intermediate aquifer. Springs issuing from granitic rocks are associated mostly with major regional fault structures. Springs issuing from other rocks probably are related to local faulting. Individual spring flows and water temperatures are variable and range from less than 1 gallon per minute to 2,710 gallons per minute and from 20.5 degrees to 94.0 degrees Celsius. Annual spring discharge is at least 27,000 acre-feet; heat discharges convectively is estimated to be 5.0 x 10<sup>7</sup> calories per second. Thermal springs discharge relatively dilute water; dissolved solids range from 103 to 839 milligrams per liter. The chemical quality of the water suggests deep circulation of meteoric water. Estimated reservoir temperatures are generally less than 100 degrees Celsius, but temperatures for several springs exceed 150 degrees Celsius. Stable-isotope data suggest that most of the thermal water is not derived from current precipitation. Carbon-14 values indicate that thermal waters are old; apparent residence times range from 9,000 to more than 40,000 years.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri854172","usgsCitation":"Young, H., 1985, Geochemistry and hydrology of thermal springs in the Idaho Batholith and adjacent areas, central Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 85-4172, Report: iii, 44 p.; 2 Plates: 33.92 x 35.78 inches and 34.62 x 36.35 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri854172.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 44 p.; 2 Plates: 33.92 x 35.78 inches and 34.62 x 36.35 inches","numberOfPages":"49","costCenters":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":119347,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4172/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59389,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4172/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":59390,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4172/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":59391,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4172/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Idaho Batholith","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117.24,41.99 ], [ -117.24,49.0 ], [ -111.04,49.0 ], [ -111.04,41.99 ], [ -117.24,41.99 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1fe4b07f02db6ab73f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Young, H.W.","contributorId":68278,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Young","given":"H.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203567,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
