The study, done in cooperation with the City of Bellevue, was part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 's National Urban Runoff program. The objectives of the study were to (1) establish a consistent and accessible data base for typical urban watersheds; (2) determine the magnitude and frequency of storm-runoff loads of water-quality constituents from three catchments in the city; (3) develop methods for estimating storm and annual loads of water-quality constituents from unsampled catchments in the study area; and (4) test the effectiveness of storm-water-quality management alternatives, such as street sweeping and detention storage, for the attenuation of constituent loads carried in storm runoff. This report presents data collected during the study period. Data include rainfall and runoff amounts, physical characteristics of the catchments, the chemical quality of storm runoff and in wet- and dry-atmospheric deposition, constituent loads in storm runoff and in wet- and dry-atmospheric deposition, and storm characteristics data, such as rainfall and runoff volumes. Basin characteristics were determined for all 30 sites for 1978 conditions.\r\n\r\nAnnual peaks were recorded or estimated for all 30 sites for water years 1978-82; an additional year of peak discharges was available at four sites. The 2-year (Q2) and 5-year (Q5) flood peaks were determined from these annual peaks.Q2 and Q5 values also were calculated using published regionalized regression equations for Ohio. The ratios of the observed to predicted 2-year (R2) and 5-year (R5) values were then calculated.\r\n\r\nThis study found that observed flood peaks aree lower than estimated peaks by a significant amount in surface-mined basins. The average ratios of observed to predicted R2 values are 0.51 for basins with more than 40 percent surface-minded land, and 0.68 for sites with any surface-mined land. The average R5 value is 0.55 for sites with more than 40 percent surface-minded land, and 0.61 for sites with any surface-mined land.\r\n\r\nEstimated flood peaks from forested basins agree with the observed values fairly well. R2 values average 0.87 for sites with 20 percent or more forested land, but no surface-mined land, and R5 values average 0.96. If all sites with more than 20 percent forested land and some surface-mined land are considered, R2 the values average 0.86, and the R5 values average 0.82.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr85194","usgsCitation":"Kolva, J., 1985, Preliminary evaluation of magnitude and frequency of floods in selected small drainage basins in Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-194, iv, 30 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr85194.","productDescription":"iv, 30 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146591,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0194/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":43209,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0194/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db668ddd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kolva, J.R.","contributorId":64264,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kolva","given":"J.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169597,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Ground waters in each of these systems evolve from low dissolved-solids concentration, near-neutral pH, predominantly calcium and magnesium bicarbonate types in their recharge areas, to high dissolved-solids concentration, high pH, predominantly sodium-bicarbonate types in the basins. Oxidation potentials decrease as the waters flow downgradient under confined conditions. Calculation of the saturation states of aquifer minerals suggests several groups of mineral phases that could control ground-water chemistry. Mass transfer modeling indicates, however, that the observed behavior of major and minor dissolved species in both systems can satisfactorily be explained only by equilibration with calcite, dolomite, or calcite and dolomite. The geochemistry of these systems is probably controlled by the incongruent dissolution of dolomite to form calcite. This reaction appears to be driven by cation exchange and the dissolution of carbon dioxide. Plausible carbon dioxide sources include organic carbon oxidation and lignite coalification. Aluminosilicates influence major element chemistry primarily as subtrates for cation exchange, which, in combination with carbonate equilibria, buffer ground water pH at values of 8.5 to 8.9. Dissolved-iron concentrations are controlled by equilibration with amorphous ferric oxyhydroxides in oxidizing waters, with amorphous ferric oxyhydroxides and siderite in moderately reducing waters, and with siderite and amorphous ferrous sulfide in strongly reducing waters. Measured variations in dissolved carbonate isotopic composition compare favorably with carbon isotopic evolution, calculated by assuming dedolomitization.

Recharge areas of the two systems are characterized by ground waters with high tritium and carbon-14 activities and relatively low dissolved-solids concentrations, with calcium and magnesium as the predominant cations. Recharge temperatures, calculated from dissolved-argon concentrations and 5180 and SD isotopic measurements, indicate that recharge is derived primarily from spring snow-melt rather than late spring and summer storms. Ground-water flow directions are generally parallel to trends of increasing dissolved solids concentrations and decreasing divalent to monovalent cation concentration ratios. However, these trends are sometimes obscured in areas of leakage or mixing. This volume identifies the principal geologically controlled earthquake hazards of the region (surface faulting, strong shaking, ground failure, and tsunamis), summarizes methods for characterizing their extent and severity, and suggests opportunities for their reduction. \r\n\r\nTwo systems of active faults generate earthquakes in the Los Angeles region: northwest-trending, chiefly horizontal-slip faults, such as the San Andreas, and west-trending, chiefly vertical-slip faults, such as those of the Transverse Ranges. Faults in these two systems have produced more than 40 damaging earthquakes since 1800. Ninety-five faults have slipped in late Quaternary time (approximately the past 750,000 yr) and are judged capable of generating future moderate to large earthquakes and displacing the ground surface. Average rates of late Quaternary slip or separation along these faults provide an index of their relative activity. The San Andreas and San Jacinto faults have slip rates measured in tens of millimeters per year, but most other faults have rates of about 1 mm/yr or less. Intermediate rates of as much as 6 mm/yr characterize a belt of Transverse Ranges faults that extends from near Santa Barbara to near San Bernardino. The dimensions of late Quaternary faults provide a basis for estimating the maximum sizes of likely future earthquakes in the Los Angeles region: moment magnitude .(M) 8 for the San Andreas, M 7 for the other northwest-trending elements of that fault system, and M 7.5 for the Transverse Ranges faults. Geologic and seismologic evidence along these faults, however, suggests that, for planning and designing noncritical facilities, appropriate sizes would be M 8 for the San Andreas, M 7 for the San Jacinto, M 6.5 for other northwest-trending faults, and M 6.5 to 7 for the Transverse Ranges faults. The geologic and seismologic record indicates that parts of the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults have generated major earthquakes having recurrence intervals of several tens to a few hundred years. In contrast, the geologic evidence at points along other active faults suggests recurrence intervals measured in many hundreds to several thousands of years. The distribution and character of late Quaternary surface faulting permit estimation of the likely location, style, and amount of future surface displacements. \r\n\r\nAn extensive body of geologic and geotechnical information is used to evaluate areal differences in future levels of shaking. Bedrock and alluvial deposits are differentiated according to the physical properties that control shaking response; maps of these properties are prepared by analyzing existing geologic and soils maps, the geomorphology of surficial units, and. geotechnical data obtained from boreholes. The shear-wave velocities of near-surface geologic units must be estimated for some methods of evaluating shaking potential. Regional-scale maps of highly generalized shearwave velocity groups, based on the age and texture of exposed geologic units and on a simple two-dimensional model of Quaternary sediment distribution, provide a first approximation of the areal variability in shaking response. More accurate depictions of near-surface shear-wave velocity useful for predicting ground-motion parameters take into account the thickness of the Quaternary deposits, vertical variations in sediment .type, and the correlation of shear-wave velocity with standard penetration resistance of different sediments. A map of the upper Santa Ana River basin showing shear-wave velocities to depths equal to one-quarter wavelength of a 1-s shear wave demonstrates the three-dimensional mapping procedure. \r\n\r\nFour methods for predicting the distribution and strength of shaking from future earthquakes are presented. These techniques use different measures of strong-motion","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1360","usgsCitation":"1985, Evaluating earthquake hazards in the Los Angeles region— An earth-science perspective: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1360, xii, 505 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1360.","productDescription":"xii, 505 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":388205,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74284.htm"},{"id":119439,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1360/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":67381,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1360/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Los Angeles","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.88281249999999,\n              33.100745405144245\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.94970703125,\n              33.100745405144245\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.94970703125,\n              35.29943548054545\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.88281249999999,\n              35.29943548054545\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.88281249999999,\n              33.100745405144245\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5fb09b","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Ziony, Joseph I.","contributorId":82766,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ziony","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":749949,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}]}}

The aquifer in Kansas underlies an area of 31,000 square miles in the western and south-central part of the State. This aquifer is a hydraulically connected assemblage of unconsolidated water-bearing deposits of Tertiary and Quaternary age. Maps published at a scale of 1:500 ,000 show the altitude and configuration of the water table in Kansas during 1980. Ground water moves from higher altitudes in the western part of the high Plains to lower altitudes in the eastern part at an average rate of 10 feet per mile. The up-gradient flexure of water-table contours along some of the valleys indicates that ground water discharges to the streams in those areas. These rocks, more than 1,000 feet thick, are regionally metamorphosed to the upper amphibolite facies, are pyritic, and locally contain porphyroblastic scapolite. The rocks are underlain by talctremolite schist and a thick sequence of calcitic and dolomitic marble, and are overlain by quartz, calc-silicate carbonate rock, and a pyroxene scapolite unit. All rocks are part of the metasedimentary Grenville Complex.

Individual tourmaline-rich layers in the quartzite are as thick as 3 cm and contain as much as 50 percent finegrained, brownish-green dravite. Subjacent talc schist contains fine-grained amber dravite, and silicated marble locally contains brown porphyroblasts of uvite. Gneissic granite, pegmatite, and migmatitic segregations cutting the tourmaline-bearing quartzite, gneisses, and schists are rich in black schorl.

Tourmalines from the tourmaline-rich quartzite and other metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks were analyzed by means of an electron microprobe. The compositions of tourmalines in the North Gouverneur area are clearly a function of the bulk composition of the rock. Tourmaline compositions in the quartzite have a wide range in FeO/(Fe+MgO) ratios, from 0.15 to 0.58, which are distinct from the ratios for tourmalines in granitic and pegmatitic rocks that range from 0.55 to 0.75. Tourmalines in the area have Na2O contents that range from 0.85 to 4.25 weight percent. Aluminum in all tourmalines ranges widely from about 25 to 37 weight percent AI 2O3 . The most heterogeneous tourmaline compositions are in the quartzites, although most compositions cluster in the dravite-uvite solid solution series. Substitutions involving Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Al result in the following compositional schemes: Na+Fe = Al+vacancy, and Na = Ca. Such coupled substitutions probably represent valid constraints for tourmalines from North Gouverneur.

The abundance of magnesian tourmaline in the metasedimentary rocks of the North Gouverneur area is comparable to that of tourmaline-rich rocks associated with sedimenthosted massive sulfide deposits for example, Sullivan Mine, British Columbia. A recently described large lead-zinc deposit at Dugald River, Australia, is associated with tourmaline- and scapolite-bearing rocks similar in many respects to those north of Gouverneur. Compared with known tourmaline compositions in the Sullivan Mine area, tourmalines from North Gouverneur have comparable FeO and MgO values. We suggest that other tourmaline components such as a low TiO2 content, variable Na/(Na + Ca + K) ratios, and the antipathetic correlation of Na and Ca might also be useful in discriminating tourmalines associated with ore deposits.

Ore bodies at the nearby Balmat-Edwards mining district are in marbles associated with rocks of evaporitic origin. The boron- and scapolite-rich rocks under consideration in this study possibly also are related to an evaporite-producing environment. Similar rocks that have an evaporite origin are associated with stratabound sulfide deposits at many places.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/b1626C","usgsCitation":"Brown, C., and Ayuso, R.A., 1985, Significance of tourmaline-rich rocks in the Grenville Complex of St. Lawrence County, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1626, iv, C33 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/b1626C.","productDescription":"iv, C33 p.","numberOfPages":"44","costCenters":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":166163,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1626c/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":61766,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1626c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f3d4c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brown, C.
