percent of the total data available in the Powell River basin, Virginia. Only a small portion of the hydrologic data for the basin has been compiled and stored by Federal and state agencies in two computerized hydrologic indexing systems (National Water Data Exchange and Commonwealth Data Base). Selected ground-water, surface-water, and water-quality data collected in the Powell River Basin in Wise County, Virginia are summarized. The data are obtained from three coal-mining companies, the Virginia State Water Control Board, and the U.S. Geological Survey. Water-quality data for 61 ground-water and 86 surface-water sites indicate elevated iron and manganese concentrations are present throughout the basin. A bibliography of available hydrologic reports on the area and selected pertinent hydrologic reports from other coal-producing areas is present. Basin characteristics were determined for all 30 sites for 1978 conditions.\r\n\r\nAnnual peaks were recorded or estimated for all 30 sites for water years 1978-82; an additional year of peak discharges was available at four sites. The 2-year (Q2) and 5-year (Q5) flood peaks were determined from these annual peaks.Q2 and Q5 values also were calculated using published regionalized regression equations for Ohio. The ratios of the observed to predicted 2-year (R2) and 5-year (R5) values were then calculated.\r\n\r\nThis study found that observed flood peaks aree lower than estimated peaks by a significant amount in surface-mined basins. The average ratios of observed to predicted R2 values are 0.51 for basins with more than 40 percent surface-minded land, and 0.68 for sites with any surface-mined land. The average R5 value is 0.55 for sites with more than 40 percent surface-minded land, and 0.61 for sites with any surface-mined land.\r\n\r\nEstimated flood peaks from forested basins agree with the observed values fairly well. R2 values average 0.87 for sites with 20 percent or more forested land, but no surface-mined land, and R5 values average 0.96. Data uses and funding sources are identified for each station. All stations have sufficient justification for continuation although 10 are primarily used to provide data for short-term research studies. The continued operation of these 10 stations should be evaluated when the studies have been completed. Two adjacent drainage basins with different levels of development were studied to determine the effects of minerals development on water quality. A high level of minerals development was occurring in the Thief Creek drainage basin; little or no development was occurring in the Chicken Creek drainage basin. Streamflow, suspended sediment , water temperature, and specific conductance data were collected at each creek from May through September, 1984. Water samples were analyzed for common characteristics and constituents, and for trace metals, iron, and manganese. The sparsity of Nb is accompanied by low values for La, Sn, W, Y, and Zr and relatively high but insignificant values for Be and Mo. Base and precious metals are either below their respective limits of determination in the various sample media or are present at background levels commensurate with average crustal abundances in felsic rocks. Pegmatite dikes associated with the syenite plutons are rare and lack vermiculite. The present investigation disclosed no possible ore deposits in the plutons covered by the field work.
\nKnown kyanite-topaz-natroalunite rocks in the vicinity of the surveyed areas should be examined for possible deposits of Cu, Mo, or Au associated with high-alumina hydrothermal deposits.
