(figs. 1 and 2), for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Included in this letter are brief descriptions of (1) study methods employed in the phase 3 investigation that have not been previously described in earlier reports, and (2) results of the phase 3 investigation as they relate to the results of the previous phases of the investigation. The data from the phase 3 investigation that are presented and described herein were collected during November 1991-January 1992.\r\nThe Galena-Platteville aquifer is the uppermost bedrock aquifer beneath the site. The Glenwood Formation of Ordovician age, a potential confining unit, separates the Galena-Platteville aquifer from the underlying St. Peter Sandstone aquifer (fig. 3). The St. Peter Sandstone aquifer is an important source of ground water to Belvidere and other cities in the region.\r\n\r\nThe phase 3 investigation was done (1) to determine the lithology of the Glenwood Formation; (2) to determine the vertical distribution of horizontal hydraulic conductivity (K) and concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOC's) in the upper 150 ft (feet) of the Galena-Platteville aquifer at an existing monitoring location, borehole G127GP (figs. 2 and 3) ; and (3) to confirm the presence or absence of VOC's in the St. Peter Sandstone aquifer at a new monitoring location, well G127SP (figs. 2 and 3). Additional components of the site investigation described in this letter include determination of vertical hydraulic gradients between the Galena-Platteville and St. Peter Sandstone aquifers and in situ measurement of selected water-quality characteristics (pH, temperature, specific conductance, Eh, and dissolved oxygen) in borehole G127GP.\r\n\r\nThe results of the first and second phases of the USGS investigation at the Parson's Casket Hardware site are presented in two previous USGS Open-File Reports prepared for the USEPA (Mills, 1993a, 1993b) . These reports describe the hydrogeology of the study site, principally the Galena-Platteville aquifer, and the distribution of VOC concentrations in the Galena-Platteville aquifer. (The stratigraphic nomenclature used in this report is that of the Illinois State Geological Survey (Willman and others, 1975, p. 47-87) and does not necessarily follow the usage of the USGS. Spurr, Alaska: October 12, 1989 - December 31, 1990","docAbstract":"The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), a cooperative program of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, began a program of seismic monitoring at potentially active volcanoes in the Cook Inlet region in 1988. Seismic monitoring of this area was previously accomplished by two independent seismic networks operated by the U.S. Geological Survey (Northern Cook Inlet) and the Geophysical Institute (Southern Cook Inlet). In 1989 the AVO seismic program consisted of three small-aperture networks of six, five, and six stations on Mt. Spurr, Redoubt Volcano, and Augustine Volcano respectively. Thirty-five other stations were operated in the Cook Inlet region as part of the AVO program. During 1990 six additional stations were added to the Redoubt network in response to eruptive activity, and three stations were installed at Iliamna Volcano. The principal objectives of the AVO program have been the seismic surveillance of the Cook Inlet volcanoes and the investigation of seismic processes associated with active volcanism.
\nThe locations of seismograph stations operated by AVO between 1988 and 1990 are shown in Figure 1. Geographic coordinates, elevations, and the installation date of each of the stations are contained in Appendix A. Signals from each of the stations are telemetered to Fairbanks, where recording and analysis take place. Data is recorded digitally in event-detection mode on a PC/AT system and continuously and in event-detection mode on a Masscomp system (Alaska Volcano Observatory Staff, 1990). The two event-detection systems employ different triggering parameters, with the PC/AT system having greater sensitivity for events in close proximity to the volcanoes. Data is also recorded on Helicorders, a Real-time Seismic Amplitude Measurement (RSAM) system (Murray and Endo, 1989; Endo and Murray, 1991), and a Seismic Spectral Amplitude Measurement (SSAM) system (Stephens and others, in press). A description of the various components of the computer systems, their networking, and associated software is given by March and Power (1990).
\nFollowing a 23 year period of quiescence, Redoubt Volcano erupted between December 14,1989 and April 21,1990. The eruption was accompanied by thousands of earthquakes (Alaska Volcano Observatory Staff, 1990). Throughout the eruption sequence, data from the PC/AT system provided the primary means of determining earthquake hypocenters. This report catalogs the earthquake hypocenters and magnitudes calculated from data collected between October 12, 1989 and December 31, 1990 on the PC/AT acquisition system, provides station locations, statistics, and calibrations, and outlines which stations were recorded and used in triggering the PC/AT system.

The primary objective of the northern cornbelt sand-plains MSEA is to evaluate the effects of ridge-tillage practices in a corn and soybean farming system on ground-water quality. The Minnesota MSEA program is a cooperative study primarily between the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, the University of Minnesota Soil Science Department, and the U.S. Geological Survey. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Minnesota are also cooperating in the evaluation of ground-water quality at the MSEA.

The software provides capabilities to input, update, and retrieve geochemical data. Data can be input to the data base either interactively or by loading in a file of specially formatted data records. Stored data can be viewed and updated interactively.
Data can be retrieved and output in the form of a table, or the data can be output to a file in a format suitable for input to other software packages. Access to the data can be restricted on a station-by-station basis to protect preliminary or proprietary data from unauthorized use.
The geochemical data-base software is designed as a single-user system. Only one user can update the data base at a time. However, if no user is updating the data base, multiple users can use the retrieval routines to retrieve and output data from the data base. The software is written in Fortran 77, but uses a number of systemdependent subroutines. Data are stored in a group of direct-access files.

Since 1960, total withdrawals have increased, although there have been periods of increases and decreases. The largest amount of water use (14,300 Mgal/d) occurred in 1980, which was almost 2.5 times more than in 1960. There has been a general increase in withdrawals by public water suppliers, with a trend toward an increasing percentage of population relying on public supplies as their source of water for domestic use. There was an increase in water use by industries during the 1960's, a leveling off during the 1970's, and a general decrease in the 1980's. Industries and powerplants rely heavily on surface water, in Indiana, more water is used for energy production than all other water-use categories combined. Reliability of the data improved significantly in 1985 when facilities capable of withdrawing 100,000 gal/d were required to report their monthly withdrawals annually to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). IDNR maintains these data and makes these data available to the U.S. Geological Survey and other interested parties. In addition, IDNR publishes these data by county for the entire State annually.
