Unconsolidated materials are generally less than 10 feet thick except in well-drained glacial deposits along the Seldovia-Jakolof Bay Road and in depressions in the bedrock surface. These depressions are poorly drained and commonly contain peat bogs. Development of domestic wells (1-15 gallons per minute) may be possible from unconsolidated materials and sedimentary bedrock, but larger water requirements must be met from surface-water sources. In areas having the water table or top of bedrock at shallow depths, effluent from sewage disposal systems may cause pollution of the land surface and nearby surface water. Seepage from hillside aquifers and unstable land along the coast of Kachemak Bay may adversely affect roads and structures. The most recent, and perhaps the worst in historical times, occurred in November, 1974 (Fathauer, 1975). Evidence of storm surge events is exhibited in sea-floor stratigraphy as well as shoreline flooding and indicates that significant widespread changes in sea-floor sedimentation take place (Nelson and Creager, 1977). These changes have implications for installations on the sea floor and for mass transport of pollutants.</p><p>This paper describes the interbedded sand layers found in southern Norton Sound off the modern Yukon Delta that are deposited by the storm surge events. Such deposits are evident in both modern and ancient deposits of epicontinental shelves (Hays, 1967; Howard and Reineck, in press; Anderton, 1976.). These graded sand layers in very shallow water mimic many of the features of thin-bedded turbidite sands, although the shallow water deposits are thought to have a very different mechanism of deposition related to storm surge processes.</p><p>Two factors in the oceanographic setting of northern Bering Sea magnify the effects of storm surge. The sea floor is very shallow (less than 20 m deep over wide areas) particularly in Norton Sound. Consequently there is intensive wave reworking which causes extensive sea-floor erosion, mass movement, displacement, and offshore progradation of significant amounts of sediment during storm surges; The second factor is a system of strong dynamic_ bottom currents that can move large amounts of sediment northward to Chukchi Sea during normal weather. Much more sediment is moved when the current is reinforced by relaxing of the sea surface set-up caused by storm surge (Fig. 1) (Flemming and Heggarty, 1966; Coachman et al., 1976; Cacchione and Drake, 1979; Schumacher and Tripp, 1979).</p><p>Another important influence on the sedimentation in southern Norton Sound is the effect of seasonal processes on the Yukon River delta, During the winter months from November to May the Yukon River averages 40,000 cfs when the ice-covered river is fed mainly by base flow (Dupre, 1976). Included are estimates of low-flow frequency at 10 gaging stations, flow duration at 8 gaging stations, and low-flow frequency characteristics at 13 low-flow partial-record stations and 81 miscellaneous sites. Equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at ungaged sites and at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and low-flow partial-record stations to basin characteristics. The standard error of estimate is provided for each method of estimating the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years and once in 10 years. The standard error of estimate for the 7-day 10-year low flow ranged from 9% to 113% depending on the type of data available. Standard error provides the user with the expected degree of accuracy for each method. The hydrologic budget for this period showed a perennial yield of about 9,800 acre-feet per year and an annual ground-water discharge of about 11,400 acre-feet per year, comprising net pumpage of 7,100 acre-feet, phreatophyte evapotranspiration of 3,000 acre-feet, and base streamflow of 1 ,300 acre-feet. The base flow in San Antonio Creek could diminish to zero when net pumpage reaches 13,500 acre-feet per year. The environmentally sensitive marshland area of Barka Slough may then become stressed as water normally lost through evapotranspiration is captured by pumpage. The aquifer consists of alluvial valley fill that ranges in thickness from 0 to 3,500 feet. Ground water moves seaward from recharge areas along mountain fronts to a consolidated rock barrier about 5 miles east of the Pacific coast. Upwelling of ground water just east of the barrier has resulted in the 550-acre Barka Slough. Transmissivity of the aquifer ranges from 2,600 to 34,000 feet squared per day, with the lowest values occurring in the central part of the valley where the aquifer is thickest but probably finer grained. The salinity problems are increasing in the agricultural parts of the valley, which is east of the barrier. West of the barrier, stream and ground-water quality is poor, owing to seepage of saline water from the marine shale that underlies the area at shallow depths. A proposed basinwide monitoring program includes 17 water-level sites, 12 water-quality sampling sites, 3 streamflow measuring sites, and periodic infrared aerial photography of Barka Slough. The area surveyed is located in the western San Juan Mountains near Lake City, Colorado. The general area covered is between 37°45' and 38° latitude north and 107°15' and 107°35' longitude west. The survey flying was confined to nine valleys which surround the Lake City caldera. Four blocks were surveyed from October 22 to October 27, 1979 for a total of 535 line - kilometers. The survey was flown as part of a mineral appraisal study conducted in cooperation with Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The survey was done to detect massive mineralization, mainly copper, and to locate conductive faults that may be suitable sites for uranium mineralization.</p><p>To be useful, airborne electromagnetic measurements must be made within a few hundred feet of the surface. The area that was flown is so rugged that a helicopter rather than a fixed-wing aircraft was used.</p><p>Fraser and Dvorak summarize the data of the survey areas as follows: in the east and south, the ground resistivities varied over a broad range—, from 20 to 1000 ohm-m. The western and northern parts of the area were characterized by resistivities mostly in the 300 to 1000 ohm-m range. The principal water-bearing zone is a shell bed 35 to 55 feet below land surface. The aquifer is unconfined, and the water table was about 4 feet below land surface during the investigation (spring 1979). Aquifer tests indicate a transmissivity for the aquifer of approximately 2,400 feet squared per day. Water in the upper 40 feet of the aquifer is fresh, but becomes increasingly brackish with depth. Use of water from the surficial aquifer is limited because of low yields and poor water quality.
