However, by the standard methods used-batch processing and off-line plotting-the production of a finished map commonly takes 2-3 weeks. \r\n\r\nTo produce computer-generated maps more rapidly, cheaply, and easily, and also to provide an effective demonstration tool, we have devised two related methods for plotting maps as alternatives to conventional batch methods. These methods are: 1. Quick-Plot, an interactive program whose output appears on a CRT (cathode-ray-tube) device, and 2. The Interactive CAM (Cartographic Automatic Mapping system), which combines batch and interactive runs. The output of the Interactive CAM system is final compilation (not camera-ready) paper copy. Both methods are designed to use data from the CRIB file in conjunction with a map-plotting program. \r\n\r\nQuick-Plot retrieves a user-selected subset of data from the CRIB file, immediately produces an image of the desired area on a CRT device, and plots data points according to a limited set of user-selected symbols. This method is useful for immediate evaluation of the map and for demonstrating how trial maps can be made quickly. \r\n\r\nThe Interactive CAM system links the output of an interactive CRIB retrieval to a modified version of the CAM program, which runs in the batch mode and stores plotting instructions on a disk, rather than on a tape. The disk can be accessed by a CRT, and, thus, the user can view and evaluate the map output on a CRT immediately after a batch run, without waiting 1-3 days for an off-line plot. The user can, therefore, do most of the layout and design work in a relatively short time by use of the CRT, before generating a plot tape and having the map plotted on an off-line plotter.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Branch of Distribution, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir815","usgsCitation":"Calkins, J.A., Crosby, A., Huffman, T., Clark, A.L., Mason, G., and Bascle, R., 1980, Interactive computer methods for generating mineral-resource maps: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 815, iv, 70 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir815.","productDescription":"iv, 70 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124368,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0815/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31443,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0815/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dbe4b07f02db5e0ca9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Calkins, James Alfred","contributorId":75504,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Calkins","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"Alfred","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148851,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Crosby, A.S.","contributorId":77127,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Crosby","given":"A.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148852,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Huffman, T.E.","contributorId":15593,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Huffman","given":"T.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148849,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Clark, A. This report summarizes the geology and petroleum potential of the area. \r\n\r\nThe Baltimore Canyon Trough is an elongate, seaward-opening sedimentary basin filled by as much as 14 km of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks. The basin first formed under the New Jersey shelf and gradually spread west and south as the area subsided after the rifting that formed the Atlantic basin. \r\n\r\nRocks of the Triassic and Jurassic Systems together are more than 8 km thick in a depocenter areally restricted to the northern part of the trough. Basal Jurassic rocks are apparently nonmarine sedimentary rocks bedded with evaporite deposits. Direct evidence that some salt is in the basal Jurassic section comes from the Houston Oil and Minerals 676-1 well, which penetrated salt at a depth of about 3.8 km. \r\n\r\nDuring the Middle and Late Jurassic, more open marine conditions prevailed than in the Early Jurassic, and carbonate banks and reefs formed discontinuously along the seaward side of the shelf. Sand flats likely occupied the central part of the shelf, and these probably graded shoreward into nonmarine red beds that accumulated in a bordering coastal plain. Thick nonmarine sands and silty shales of Late Jurassic age were deposited in what is now the nearshore and midshelf area. These sedimentary rocks probably grade into thick marine carbonate rocks near the present shelf edge. \r\n\r\nDuring the Cretaceous, less sediment accumulated (about 4 km) than during the Jurassic, and most was deposited during Early Cretaceous time. The Cretaceous units show two main trends through time-a diminishing rate of sediment accumulation and an increase in marine character of sediments. During the Middle and Late Cretaceous, calcareous sand and mud filled the basin, buried the shelf-edge reefs and later spilled across the reefs into the oceanic basin as worldwide sea level reached a maximum. \r\n\r\nCenozoic deposits are spread over the present shelf and adjacent Coastal Plain in overlapping sheets of marine and nonmarine sediment. The maximum thickness (1.5 km) is along the outer part of the present shelf. Major tectonic deformation in the Baltimore Canyon Trough area appears to have terminated near the end of the Early Cretaceous, when at least one large mafic intrusion (Great Stone dome) was emplaced. Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks are arched above older uplifted fault blocks near the shelf edge; this arching may be the result of draping due to differential compaction or, perhaps, minor movement of the fault blocks during Late Cretaceous time. \r\n\r\nThe dominance of terrestrial over marine-derived organic matter in sediment samples from the COST No. B-2 well indicates that economic amounts of liquid petroleum hydrocarbons were probably not generated in the area but suggests a high potential for generation of wet or dry gas. Supporting evidence for the presence of natural-gas deposits on the slope comes from AMCOR 6021, the upper 305 m of which penetrated sediments that contained methane, ethane, and propane. Texaco, Inc., has announced that its 598-1 well yielded nearly 479,000 m s of natural gas per day from two zones during early testing. Further indication of possible gas deposits comes from analyzing the amplitude (bright spots) of seismic data. \r\n\r\nGeochemical studies of the COST No. B-2 well have shown that the shelf area of the Baltimore Canyon Trough has a relatively low geothermal gradient today and that it apparently has had a gradient as low or even lower throughout the Cretaceous to Holocene. A controversy exists concerning the maturity of the basal sediments penetrated by the COST No. B-2 well. Although significant amounts of gaseous hydrocarbons may have been generated, large amounts of liquid petroleum hydrocarbons probably hav","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir812","usgsCitation":"Mattick, R.E., and Hennessy, J.L., 1980, Structural framework, stratigraphy, and petroleum geology of the area of oil and gas lease Sale No. 49 on the U.S. Atlantic continental shelf and slope: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 812, v, 101 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir812.","productDescription":"v, 101 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":117502,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0812/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31512,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0812/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a49e5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mattick, Robert E.","contributorId":44130,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mattick","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":149045,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hennessy, Jacqueline L.","contributorId":24334,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hennessy","given":"Jacqueline","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":149044,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Only three wells were being used in 1979, two by the community of St. Paul and one by the Coast Guard Loran facility. All wells are in the southeastern part of the island. The island has no established surface drainage, and no springs were found on the eastern part of the island during the survey. Drainage of ground-water from the island is assumed to be by seepage through the sandy deposits along the east coast and possibly by undersea discharge elsewhere on the island. On the basis of present well yields, amount of freshwater inferred to be present below the water table, and potential recharge from precipitation, it is concluded that it should be possible to design a well field in the southeastern part of the island that could yield more than a million gallons per day without danger of inducing saline water into the well field. The water is of good chemical quality. Furthermore, when certain physical properties of the geologic materials such as texture, hardness and fracture spacing are observed during geologic mapping, a method can be used to predict shear-wave velocity from the descriptions of geologic units. By measuring shear-wave velocities in key units together with the above data, regional maps depicting the earthquake shaking hazard can be compiled. The goals of the current program are to provide shear-wave data in the Los Angeles area to compare with that in the San Francisco Bay Region where high-strain intensity data are available. Data from twenty-seven locations are summarized in this report as part of a continuing project to seismically zone the Los Angeles area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr80378","usgsCitation":"Gibbs, J., Fumal, T.E., and Roth, E.F., 1980, In-situ measurements of seismic velocity at 27 locations in the Los Angeles, California region: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-378, i, 169 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80378.","productDescription":"i, 169 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":142020,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_80_378.gif"},{"id":259294,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0378/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":259118,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0378/of80-378.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Los Angeles","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fce4b07f02db5f58e9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gibbs, James F.","contributorId":95880,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gibbs","given":"James F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159144,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fumal, Thomas E.","contributorId":67882,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fumal","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":159143,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Roth, Edward F.","contributorId":12481,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Roth","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159142,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge. </p><p>The descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Statewide, the principal cations in streamflow are calcium and sodium, and the principal anions are bicarbonate and sulfate. Calcium and bicarbonate usually predominate where mean specific conductance is less than 1,000 umho/cm, and sodium and sulfate predominate where the mean exceeds 1,000 umho/cm. </p><p>Based on regression equations, dissolved solids, hardness, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, with some exceptions, correlate well with specific conductance for all stream sites. </p><p>Illustrations of how regression equations may be used to estimate water quality of streamflow are given and are compared with values from actual analyses.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The model was calibrated and verified using hydraulic and water-quality data collected in 1976 and 1979. The water-quality con-stituents modeled were 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand, total organic nitrogen, total ammonia, total nitrite, total nitrate, and dissolved oxygen. Model calibration was acceptable for all constituents except total organic nitrogen, and verification was acceptable for all constituents except total organic nitrogen and total nitrite. A relationship between nonionized and total ammonia was defined to provide simulation capability for nonionized ammonia.</p><p>The model was used to simulate the water-quality effects of 63 combinations of wastewater treatment. The water-quality effects were evaluated with respect to water-quality guidelines that may be applied based on possible stream-use classifications. Model simulations were based on a 7-day low flow with a 10-year recurrence interval that occurs between August 15 and October 15 and on a winter low-flow period that occurs as a result of upstream storage of water.</p><p>The mixing zone downstream from the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant outfall was evaluated to determine where the water-quality guidelines should apply for the model simulations. Complete lateral mixing of the effluent from the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant occurred 2.7 river miles downstream from the outfall.</p><p>Model simulations indicated a water-quality guideline of 0.06 milligram per liter nonionized ammonia nitrogen would be exceeded at the end of the mixing zone for Q7,10 conditions with secondary treatment at the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant and a projected effluent discharge for the year 2000, and that a water-quality guideline of 0.5 milligram per liter total&nbsp;nitrite nitrogen would be exceeded for winter conditions and the same waste-water-treatment possibility. Wastewater-treatment possibilities with a pro-jected discharge for the year 2000 which would result in both water-quality guidelines being met include land application of treated effluent and advanced secondary treatment at the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant with conversion of ammonia to nitrate to result in an effluent total ammonia nitrogen concentration of 5.4 to 10.6 milligrams per liter, depending on the quality of effluent from the downstream discharge from the CF&amp;I Steel Corp.</p><p>Model simulations also included an evaluation of flow augmentation necessary to meet a water-quality guideline of 0.06 milligram per liter non-ionized ammonia nitrogen. The evaluation was made for the n,7,10 period, secondary treatment at the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant with a projected discharge for the year 2000, and effluent water quality at a downstream discharge which could contain twice the estimated ammonia concentration allowable for best available technology treatment for the iron and steel industry. The flow augmentation necessary to meet the water-quality guideline, based on the model simulations, is approximately 140 cubic feet per second.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8082","usgsCitation":"Cain, D., Baldridge, D., and Edelmann, P., 1980, Waste-assimilation capacity of the Arkansas River in Pueblo County, Colorado, as it relates to water-quality guidelines and stream classification: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-82, vii, 104 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8082.","productDescription":"vii, 104 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158308,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0082/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":359114,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0082/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Pueblo County","otherGeospatial":"Arkansas River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.76150512695312,\n              38.135636748588574\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.09957885742188,\n              38.135636748588574\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.09957885742188,\n              38.36534867623901\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.76150512695312,\n              38.36534867623901\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.76150512695312,\n              38.135636748588574\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd46a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cain, Doug","contributorId":101655,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cain","given":"Doug","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196443,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Baldridge, Duaina","contributorId":100889,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baldridge","given":"Duaina","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196442,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Edelmann, Patrick","contributorId":86305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edelmann","given":"Patrick","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196441,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The study area lies between Great South Channel to the east and Black Channel to the west, and extends from the 50-m isobath to the shelf edge.</p><p>Single-channel high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and echo-sounding profiles were collected along 941 km of trackline, sidescan sonar records were collected along 673 km of trackline. The subbottom profiles were collected by using a Huntec*system that was towed at midwater depths. Filters were set at 1 to 7 kHz. Echo-sounding records were collected by using a 60 kHz EDO Western system. A Klein stdescan sonar, set to scan 100 m to either side of the towed fish, was used to collect the sonographs.</p><p>Navigation during the survey was done by the scientific staff using Loran-C equipment. Fixes were recorded and logged at least every 15 minutes; after the cruise, they were digitized and stored on magnetic tape.</p><p>The original records can be seen and studied at the U.S. Geological Survey Data Library at Woods Hole, MA 02543. Microfilm copies of the subbottom, echosounding, and sidescan sonar records collected during the cruise can be purchased from the National Geophysical and Solar-Terrestrial Data Center, NOAA (National Oceanic ancl Atmosphere Administration), Boulder, CO 80302.</p>","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr80177","usgsCitation":"Twichell, D.C., 1980, Single-channel seismic-reflection profiles and sidescan sonar records collected during May 15-20, 1978, on the southern New England continental shelf: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-177, 3 p., 1 leaf of plates :map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80177.","productDescription":"3 p., 1 leaf of plates :map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":259883,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0177/ofr1980177.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.58 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1980-177"},{"id":145690,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr80177.PNG"}],"contact":"<p><a href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\" data-mce-href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\">Coastal and Marine Geology Program</a><br> U.S. Geological Survey<br> 384 Woods Hole Road<br> Woods Hole, MA 02543</p>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f6e4b07f02db5f17bb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Twichell, David C.","contributorId":37730,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Twichell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":163236,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
