These data have been stored in many data bases and locations. A collective urban-stormwater data base has now been assembled on magnetic tape and contains data from the U.S. Geological Survey 's urban-stormwater program, that includes data from the Nationwide Urban Runoff Program. Stations having simultaneous rainfall, runoff, and water-quality data were selected for the data base. Rigorous quality-assurance procedures were followed to ensure that the data were of good quality. The resultant data base contains information for 723 storms from 99 stations in 22 metropolitan areas throughout the United States. Data for five or more storms are available for about two-thirds of the stations. This data base is available to the public in standardized format on magnetic tape. This publication explains the content and format of the tape. Ground-water levels were monitored in wells open to the upper Floridan (artesian) aquifer system and in wells open to the surficial (water-table) aquifer. Double-mass curves were used to separate drawdown from natural water-level fluctuations. Drawdowns in the Floridan were 4.3 feet at a site 350 feet away from the pumped well, 4.1 feet at a site 1,000 feet away, 1.0 foot at a site 1.0 mile away, and 0.4 foot at a site 5.8 miles away. After an initial drawdown of 0.2 foot at a surficial aquifer well 1,000 feet from the pumped well, there was some recovery, and long-term drawdown averaged less than 0.2 foot. In a five-day aquifer test during a period of no rainfall in 1976, the ratio of surficial aquifer drawdown to Floridan aquifer system drawdown reached equilibrum at 0.05. The results of the long-term test indicate that this ratio is the upper limit of long-term drawdown because of capture of evapotranspiration and runoff during the long-term test. Average pumpage in 1980 in Volusia County was 66 million gallons per day. Water levels in the Floridan aquifer system declined more than 10 feet over an area of 70 square miles from 1955 to 1982. The annual water budget of the budget of the Floridan aquifer system consists of 5 inches downward leakage inflow, 1 inch upward leakage outflow, 1 inch horizontal inflow, 1.5 inches horizontal outflow, 2.5 inches discharge from springs and flowing wells, and 1 inch pumpage. Saltwater intrusion is occurring in the surficial aquifer on the barrier island. There is little evidence that intrusion is occurring uniformly over large areas in the Floridan aquifer system. Vertical intrusion is occurring at sites of public-supply pumping. Many of these wells in the fringes of the county have been abandoned and replaced by wells closer to the central part of the county. Minimizing well depth is probably the single most effective step against intrusion. CHannel-geometry characteristics, rather than basin characteristics, were used as independent variables. Width of active channel was the only channel-geometry characteristic significant at the 5-percent level in the estimating equations for alluvial channels. Standard errors of estimate for those equations range for the 100-year flood peak. The equations were developed from data collected at 142 gaging stations that have active-channel widths ranging from 2 to 495 feet.\r\n\r\nFor streams with bedrock or firm channels, depth of the bankfull channel and active-channel width were statistically significant characteristics at the 5-percent level for all but the 2-year recurrence interval flood-peak equation, for which only active-channel width was statistically significant. Standard errors of estimate range from 33 percent for the 5-year flood peak to 40 percent for the 100-year flood peak when both significant variables are included in the equations. Standard errors of estimate range from 36 percent to 46 percent when only the active-channel width independent variable is used. S. Geological Survey determined the efficiency of a pond constructed to control sediment from a surface coal mine site by measuring runoff and sediment loads at the inlet to and discharge from the pond during storms. The pond is below a 17.9-acre block-cut coal mine in Fayette County, Pennsylvania and has a permanent pool capacity of 60,000 cu ft. The capacity at the principal spillway and the emergency spillway are 128,900 and 175,500 cu ft, respectively. The pond is equipped with a 3-inch flow control valve, used by the mine operator to regulate the pond stage between the permanent pool and the principal spillway. Data were collected during five moderate storms when the 3-inch control valve was intentionally opened. The ration between the quantity of water in the pond at the start of the storm and the quantity to runoff to the pond was calculated for each storm. The ratios were 3.6, 2.5, 8.6, 2.9, and 1.5 for the five storms. The measured trap efficiencies were 98.1, 92.8, 99.6, 99.1, and 98.2%, for the five storms. Water levels have declined as much as 160 feet since 1940, and during peak seasonal demand as much as 190 feet. The Pensacola clay confining bed inhibits interchange of water between the Floridan aquifer and the surficial sand-and-gravel aquifer. The latter aquifer is of secondary importance as a public supply source. The Bucatunna clay confining bed separates the Floridan into upper and lower limestone units; the Floridan is underlain by the relatively impermeable Lisbon/Tallahatta confining unit. The Floridan aquifer dips south to the Gulf of Mexico, and is recharged by rainfall in northern Okaloosa and Walton Counties and in Alabama. The regional gradient of the potentiometric surface of the upper limestone, and presumably that of the lower limstone also, is south. Pumpage was variable in 1978; from 10.9 to 19.0 million gallons per day in January and June, respectively. Saline water in the upper limestone of the Floridan aquifer is less than 10 milligrams per liter inland but may be more than 150 milligrams per liter along the coast. Included are methods for determining the concentration of dissolved constituents in water, total recoverable and total of constituents in water-suspended sediment samples, and recoverable and total concentrations of constituents in samples of bottom material. Essential definitions are included in the introduction to the manual, along with a brief discussion of the use of significant figures in calculating and reporting analytical results. Quality control in the water-analysis laboratory is discussed, including accuracy and precision of analyses, the use of standard reference water samples, and the operation of an effective quality assurance program. Methods for sample preparation and pretreatment are given also.</p><p>A brief discussion of the principles of the analytical techniques involved and their particular application to water and sediment analysis is presented. The analytical methods involving these techniques are arranged alphabetically according to constituent. For each method given, the general topics covered are application, principle of the method, interferences, apparatus and reagents required, a detailed description of the analytical procedure, reporting results, units and significant figures, and analytical precision data, when available. Rhodamine WT was used as the tracer-dye. Unsteady flow conditions prevailed in the study reach. The rate of movement of the dye cloud between sampling cross sections ranged from 0.15 to 1.36 feet per second. The geochemistry of stream sediments and panned concentrates of the study area is in Nowlan and Gerstel (1985). The geology of the study area and vicinity is in Hedlund (1985). The mineral resource potential of the study area is described in Hedlund and others (1983). The investigations indicate that two areas in the northeastern and southwestern parts of&nbsp;the Fiddler Butte WSA have a moderate potential for uranium resources. The entire Fiddler Butte WSA has a&nbsp;moderate potential for petroleum resources, and the northeastern part of the WSA has a high potential for tar&nbsp;sand resources. The studies indicate a low potential for metallic and nonmetallic resources in the Fiddler Butte&nbsp;WSA.
