A computerized chemical model, WATEQ2, has resulted from extensive additions to and revision of the WATEQ model of Truesdell and Jones (Truesdell, A. H., and Jones, B. F., 1974, WATEQ, a computer program for calculating chemical equilibria of natural waters: J. Res. U. S. Geol, Survey, v. 2, p. 233-274). The model building effort has necessitated searching the literature and selecting thermochemical data pertinent to the reactions added to the model. This supplementary report manes available the details of the reactions added to the model together with the selected thermochemical data and their sources. Also listed are details of program operation and a brief description of the output of the model. Appendices-contain a glossary of identifiers used in the PL/1 computer code, the complete PL/1 listing, and sample output from three water analyses used as test cases.

In this report, trap efficiency was computed from reservoir inflow and outflow sediment data and from reservoir survey and outflow data. Highland Creek Reservoir is a flood retarding reservoir located in Lake County, near Kelseyville, California. This reservoir has a maximum storage capacity of 3,199 acre-feet and permanent pool storage of 921 acre-feet. Mean annual rainfall for the 14.1-square-mile drainage area above Highland Creek Dam was 29 inches during the December 1965 to September 1977 study period. Resultant mean annual runoff was 17,100 acre-feet. Total reservoir inflow for the 11.8-year study period was 202,000 acre-feet, transporting an estimated 126,000 tons (10,700 tons per year) of suspended sediment. Total reservoir outflow for the same period was 188,700 acre-feet, including 15,230 tons (1,290 tons per year) of sediment. Estimated trap efficiency for the study period was 88%, based on estimated sediment inflow and measured sediment outflow. Reservoir surveys made in December 1965 and April 1972 revealed a storage capacity loss of 35.8 acre-feet during the 6.3-year period. Computed by using an estimated specific weight, this loss represents 54,600 tons of deposited sediment. Sediment outflow during the same period was 8,890 tons. Trap efficiency for the survey period was 86%. S. Geological Survey (USGS) is making available four multichannel profiles collected by Teledyne Exploration in 1977 by means of a 48-channel streamer (3600 m long) and four airguns (2160 in). Profiles 15 and 16 were processed by.Teledyne Exploration and profiles 14 and 17 were processed on the Phoenix \"I\"* computer·by the USGS. The processing included standard demultiplexing, deconvolution before and aftfer stack, Common Depth Point (CDP) gathers, velocity analyses every 3 km, move-out correction, stacking, time-variant, filtering, and time-variant scaling.
The released lines are over the outer edge of the Continental Shelf in the northern part of the Baltimore Canyon trough (Line 14: 140 km long and Line 15: 157 km long), over the Long Island platform. (Line 16: 313 km long), and over the Carolina platform (Line 17: 186 km long). These profiles were collected as a part of a regional grid over offshore Atlantic sedimentary basins in a continuing program to assess the resource potential by means of nonproprietary data.

Withdrawals from over 100 municipal wells averaged 17.5 million gallons per day in 1978. Private wells on Cape Cod are estimated to number 15,000. Ground water occurs primarily under unconfined or water-table conditions. Artesian conditions exist where fine silt and clay beds have been deposited along Cape Cod's north shore from Bourne to Brewster, locally along the south shore, and in parts of Chatham and Orleans. Natural recharge to the aquifer is entirely from precipitation. Discharge is by pumping; evapotranspiration; direct evaporation from the water table; and seepage to rivers, marshes, and the ocean. Ground-water quality is generally suitable for domestic uses, although some public and private water wells have been contaminated. Contaminants can enter the ground water by infiltration from land surface, ponds, streams, and swamps. Infiltration from sewage lagoons, sand filter beds, septic tanks, cesspools, recharge pits, wells, or intrusion of saline water may also contaminate the aquifer. Alternative sources of drinking water, including desalination, transport from the mainland, and rainwater cisterns, are many times more expensive.

volumes and for estimating the expected hydrograph shape of rainfall-induced runoff of small streams in South Dakota. The procedures are applicable to flood flows that are not significantly affected by artificial storage or other manmade activities. For 115 gaged sites within the State, the estimates are from the frequency curves defined from the gaging records. Flood-frequency estimates are made for ungaged sites by using regression relations that require evaluation of the size, main channel slope, and a soil-infiltration index for the drainage basin. Regression relations are considered applicable for estimating flood peaks at sites on basins draining 0.05 to 100 square miles and for estimating flood volumes at sites on basins draining from 0.05 to 15 square miles.
Limitations on use of the regression relations and the reliability of regression estimates are discussed. A method is indicated for using the estimating procedure and embankment ponding to design smaller highway culverts.
The procedures were developed from analysis of flood records of 123 gaged sites in South Dakota and adjacent States. For 66 sites, short-term records were extended on the basis of long-term climatic records and a rainfall-runoff model. Linear least-squares regression analyses were used with logarithmic transformation of variables to relate flood magnitudes as dependent variables to indexes describing the drainage basins as independent variables. A dimensionless hydrograph shape was found appropriate for rainfall-runoff hydrographs in South Dakota.

GILLIS (cruise GS 7903-4) from 27 June to 11 July 1979 over the Continental Slope of the Eastern United States between Lindenkohl and Hudson Canyons. These data were acquired as part of a study to determine potential geologic hazards to petroleum development of the Baltimore Canyon trough area. On this cruise, the Continental Slope between Carteret and South Toms Canyons was surveyed along lines spaced one-half nautical mile apart to study the size and distribution of mass-wasting features as a guide to assess the importance of mass-wasting processes on the Continental Slope. The seimsic-reflection profiles were placed to complement other data gathered previously by the USGS and to continue a survey grid begun in 1978 aboard the R/V COLUMBUS !SELIN, cruise CI 7807-1.
Track-line distances totaled 1,555 km of 40-in3 air-gun (with wave shaper) profiles, 1, 750 km of 800-J sparker data, and 1,780 km of 3 .5-kHz data. All data are of high quality. A side-scan sonar system was operated briefly along the uppermost Continental Slope to acquire data over 70 km of ship's track. In addition, experimental profiling data were collected from a hydrophone towed at depth over the midslope on the end of the side-scan cable; the surface-towed sparker was used as a sound source. High-resolution profiles were collected by this method over 105 km of track.
Navigation was by Loran-C (5-minute fix interval) and satellite.
The original data may be inspected at the offices of the U.S. Geological Survey in Woods Hole, Massachusetts 02543. Microfilm copies of the data from this cruise are available for purchase from the National Geophysical and Solar-Terrestrial Data Center (NGSDC), Boulder, Colorado 80303.

During January and February 1980, storms caused substantial rises in streamflow throughout much of California. In mid-January flooding occurred in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and in the central coast area. In late January and mid-February, high floodflows in streams in coastal southern California caused much damage and several deaths. The Tijuana River in northern Baja California (Mexico) and southern San Diego County flooded many square miles of lowlands as its flow during two separate flooding episodes exceeded all records. Most reservoirs in San Diego County spilled, several for the first time since their completion. Lake Elsinore, in eastern Riverside County, caused much damage to lakeside property as it filled to an elevation not reached since 1916.
The February flooding in southern California was caused by a series of storms separated by short intervals. Some peaks of record were observed, and streamflow throughout the area remained high for a relatively long period. In many streams, the volumes of sustained flow for periods of 7 and 15 consecutive days were the greatest that have occurred during the period of record.

These data were acquired as part of a study to determine potential geologic hazards to petroleum development of the Baltimore Canyon trough area. On this cruise, the Continental Slope between Lindenkohl and Carteret Canyons was surveyed along lines spaced one-half nautical mile apart to study the size and distribution of mass-wasting features as a guide to assess the importance of mass wasting processes on the Continental Slope. The seismic-reflection profiles were placed to complement other data gathered previously by the USGS.
Track-line distances totaled 2,050 km of 40-in3 air-gun (with wave shaper) profiles, 2,100 km of 800-J sparker data, and 2,100 km of 3 .5-kHz data. The air-gun and sparker profiles are of high quality, but the 3.5-kHz system did not function well and achieved no subbottom penetration. The side-scan sonar system was operated along the uppermost Continental Slope to investigate its potential for use in this environment. Data were acquired over 22 km of ship's track.
Navigation was by Loran-C (5-minute fix interval).
