Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge. The descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Statewide, the principal cations in streamflow are calcium and sodium, and the principal anions are bicarbonate and sulfate. Calcium and bicarbonate usually predominate where mean specific conductance is less than 1,000 umho/cm, and sodium and sulfate predominate where the mean exceeds 1,000 umho/cm. Based on regression equations, dissolved solids, hardness, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, with some exceptions, correlate well with specific conductance for all stream sites. Illustrations of how regression equations may be used to estimate water quality of streamflow are given and are compared with values from actual analyses. The ages suggest that rocks cropping \nout along Albatross Bank, at the shelf edge, are as old as middle or late \nMiocene, and that the anticline forming Albatross Bank, previously defined \nwith multi- and single-channel seismic records, plunges northeastward in the \nsampled area. Foraminiferal paleobathymetry further suggests that m.ajor \ntectonic activity has occurred on the Kodiak shelf since the early or middle \nPliocene, including two episodes of vertical movement--first subsidence on the \norder of 2000 m, then uplift of at least 3000 m. These deposits were divided into three units on the basis of their lithology and hydraulic properties. Two of the three units are composed of layers of sand and gravel alternating with layers of silt and clay. The third unit consists of silt and clay and in most places separates the other two units. The thickness of the upper unit ranges from 200 to 600 feet and the middle unit from 10 to 260 feet. The thickness of the lower unit is believed to range from 2,000 to 3,000 feet.</p><p>The water-bearing strata in the upper unit are fairly continuous and average 15 feet in thickness. The lower water-bearing strata probably are not as continuous as those in the upper unit, but they yield larger quantities of water to wells. The silt-and-clay unit averages 70 feet in thickness, occurs generally near sea level, and is not known to contain any major water-bearing deposits.</p><p>The average annual ground-water recharge to streams on the Kitsap peninsula was estimated to be 17 times the 1975 annual ground-water pumpage for the peninsula. Some, hut an unknown amount, of this water is available for increased withdrawal by wells. Increased withdrawals cause decreased streamflow, declining water levels, and increased seawater contamination.</p><p>There appears to be no widespread seawater contamination of wells in the study area. Predominant rock types in the basin include granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith and basalt flows of the Columbia River Basalt Group. Waters from thermal springs in the basin, temperatures of which range from 34 to 86 degrees Celsius, are sodium bicarbonate types and are slightly alkaline. Dissolved-solids concentrations range from 173 to 470 milligrams per liter. Reservoir temperatures determined from the sodium-potassium-calcium and silicic acid-corrected silica geothermometers range from 53 to 143 degrees Celsius. Tritium, present in concentrations between 0 and 2 tritium units, indicate sampled thermal waters are at least 100 years old and possibly more than 1,000 years old. Stable isotope data indicate it is unlikely any of the nonthermal waters sampled are representative of precipitation that recharges the thermal springs in the basin. Thermal springs discharged about 5,700 acre-feet of water in 1979. Associated convective heat flux is 1.1x10 to the 7th power calories per second.
