The work was done as part of a geohydrologic study, the results of which are reported in the 1973 U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 486-H; Geohydrology of the Yuma Area, Arizona and California, by Olmsted, Loeltz, and Irelan. Most of the logs are plotted from temperatures measured with two Whitney thermistors at depth intervals of 2 to 20 feet in downward succession in each well or test hole, using land surface as datum. A few logs were made with a truck-mounted wireline logger using thermistor probes and continuously recording equipment. All measurements were in degrees Fahrenheit, later converted to degrees Celsius, and were calibrated with a mercury-in-glass thermometer. Accuracy of most of the measurements was + or - 1.0F and precision was about + or - 0.2F. The Taylor Creek drainage basin is a high-altitude system of lakes and streams which forms one of the tributaries to Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada of California and Nevada. Sampling sites were distributed between the upper and lower reaches of the basin. Streamflow and water-quality data were collected at 13 stream sites. Water-quality data and depth profiles were collected at six lake sites. The reconnaissance included measurement and evaluation of the following selected characteristics: major chemicals, nutrients, fecal coliform bacteria, phytoplankton, periphytic algae, benthic macroinvertebrates, primary productivity, and stream community diversity. Data were collected from two floods (May 4-7, and June 7-11 , 1979) with peak discharges of 24,900 cubic feet per second and 40,900 cubic feet per second. The total suspended-sediment discharge from the first flood was approximately 201,000 tons, and the total suspended-sediment discharge from the second flood was 630,000 tons. The volume of sediment from these two floods was approximately 970 acre-feet with approximately 20 acre-feet of this total being the bed load. These specimens were fractured hydraulically under biaxial loading, the fractures then being reopened by cycling the pressure at different flow rates.</p><p>Fracture orientation was determined by overcoring the borehole in the specimen. The pressure-time records obtained were of two types, dependent on fracture orientation to the borehole axis. In fracturing corresponding to a first type of pressure-time record, the direction of fracture initiation at the borehole is determined primarily by the borehole axis, the fracture orienting itself to the far field stress with propagation depending on breakdown pressure. Second type fractures can be initiated away from the borehole, propagating away from and back to the borehole and its direction is perpendicular to minimum principal stress. Numerical analyses were also carried out on experimental configurations to assist in the interpretation of pressure-time records produced experimentally.</p><p>Analytical and experimental studies indicate that: 1) it is possible to determine the normal stress component perpendicular to a fracture direction, from a first type of pressure-time record along with observation of the fracture on the borehole surface.
