The Tray Mountain Roadless Area, a 36,300-acre tract in the Chattahoochee National Forest, northeastern Georgia, lies within the Blue Redge physiographic province. The roadless area is composed of Precambrian(?)-age metamorphic rocks from two tectonic units, the Hayesville thrust sheet and the \"Helen belt\" (Nelson, 1982) (fig. 1). The Hayesville thrust sheet consists mostly of biotite gneiss and schist, fine-grained biotite-feldspar gneiss, metasandstone, quartzite, and amphibolite; ultramafic bodies, some granitic gneiss, and small pegmatites are also present. The Helen belt contains mostly metagraywacke, metasandstone, quartzite, graphite schist, amphibolite, some ultramafic bodies, and granitic gneiss.
Two \"gold belts\" and an area of mineralization associated with ultramafic rocks are on lands adjacent to the roadless area. Mining within the roadless area has not been extensive, and there is no current mineral activity in the surrounding region.

A wide seasonal range in temperature and strong orographic effects cause variations in the amount and distribution of precipitation, and thus in the resulting runoff and streamflow. Streamflow is lowest in winter, when precipitation at higher altitudes is stored as snow, and greatest in summer, when melting snow and glacier ice augment flow. Ground-water seeps and springs flowing from alluvial fans contribute to streamflow year round.
A ground-water discharge zone of particular interest is that along the toe of the Tsirku River alluvial fan, 20 miles north of Haines. During winter, the relatively warm (4 to 6 degrees Celsius) ground water maintains open leads in a reach of the Chilkat River downstream from the fan. This ice-free reach provides favorable spawning habitat for a late run of chum and coho (silver) salmon, which in turn attracts the world's largest concentration of bald eagles (more than 3,000 birds). The principal source of recharge to the ground-water system in the fan is loss of water through the beds of the many distributary channels across the fan surface.
Calculation of a water budget for the system for the period October 1982 through May 1983 indicates that ground-water discharge at the toe of the fan averages 640 cubic feet per second.
Surface and ground waters are chemically similar, calcium bicarbonate types. All stream samples had dissolved-solids concentrations of less than 115 milligrams per liter; values for ground water were slightly greater. During high summer flows, the suspended-sediment concentrations of the glacially fed Chilkat, Tsirku, and Klehini Rivers ranged from 361 to 1,530 milligrams per liter (6,360 to 22,300 tons per day).

Transmissivity of the Dakota aquifer, determined from analyses of pumping tests, ranges from 100 to 7,100 sq ft/day. Water in the Dakota aquifer is a calcium bicarbonate type water, similar to water in the High Plains aquifer, in the subcrop area. However, in areas distant from the subcrop, water in the Dakota aquifer is a sodium bicarbonate type water with dissolved solids concentrations in excess of 500 mg/L. Gradual declines in the potentiometric surface of the Dakota aquifer have occurred since the onset of pumpage in the 1960's; however, water levels in some wells have risen during the late 1970's. A digital computer model of 3-D groundwater flow was developed to simulate hydrologic conditions of a five-layer hydrologic system for 1975-82 conditions. The major components of the simulated 1975-82 water budget were well discharge from the High Plains aquifer and loss of ground water from storage in the High Plains aquifer. Although downward leakage from the High Plains aquifer in the study area represented only 18,000 acre-ft of the 1,365 ,000 acre-ft discharged from the High Plains aquifer during 1982 , it was a major source of inflow to the Dakota aquifer. Changes in storage in the Dakota aquifer in the study area during 1982 were about 5,000 acre-ft. A base-line projection was made using 1982 simulated hydraulic heads from the calibrated model and 1982 rates of pumpage from both the High Plains and the Dakota aquifers for comparison with eight additional projection simulations in which maximum pumpage from the Dakota aquifer at the end of the projections ranged from about 78,000 to 294,000 acre-ft/yr. The results from the projections indicate that: (1) pumpage from the Dakota aquifer will have a limited effect on hydraulic heads in the High Plains aquifer, (2) drawdown in the hydraulic heads in the Dakota aquifer will result in conversion of much of the Dakota aquifer to unconfined conditions, (3) change in storage will become the major water-budget component for the Dakota aquifer, (4) continuation of 1982 rates of withdrawal from the High Plains aquifer will result in dewatering of a substantial part of the aquifer in the study area. Over 4,000 claims have been located in or near the roadless area. One hundred ninety-six patented claims are in or within 1 mi of the area. Ore production from the roadless area is estimated to be about 280,000 tons, mainly gold-silver ore from seven mines in the Monte Cristo mining district. Of the 57,320 acres, about 2,100 acres are patented mining claims. The roadless area is bounded on the south and west by county roads and on the northeast by U.S. Forest Service roads. It is adjoined by the Glacier Peak Wilderness on the east.

Data were obtained chiefly from private consulting firms and from government agencies. Hydraulic properties determined included transmissivity, storage coefficient (where observation well was available), and in some cases hydraulic properties of a confining layer. The aquifers tested comprised three main types of rocks--consolidated rock deposits, glacial deposits, and alluvial deposits that include the ' Equus beds, ' an extensive alluvial deposit in south-central Kansas. The Theis recovery equation and the Cooper-Jacob modified nonequilibrium equation were the two principal solution methods used. Other methods used included the Theis nonequilibrium equation, the Hantush-Jacob equation for a leaky confined aquifer, Hantush 's modified leaky equation in which storage from a confining layer was considered, the Boulton 's delayed-yield equation. Additionally, a specific-capacity method of estimating transmissivity was used when only a single drawdown value was available.
