The stream-gaging station was discontinued on July 5, 1933. Daily streamflow records obtained at this site are published in the annual series of Geological Survey water supply papers beginning in 1925. Monthly and yearly summaries are published in Water-Supply Paper 1312.</p><p>In October 1960, the Geological Survey resumed collection of hydrologic data in the Mountain Creek watershed by establishing three stream gaging stations and one reservoir-content station. The data-collection sites are on Mountain Creek near Cedar Hill (station 08049600), Walnut Creek near Mansfield (station 08049700), Mountain Creek at Grand Prairie (station 08050100), and Mountain Creek Lake near Grand Prairie (station 08050050; fig. 1). In October 1970, the Geological Survey assumed operation of the stage station Mountain Creek near Duncanville (station 08049900; fig. 1). Since 1974 water-quality data has been collected at varying periodic intervals at the sites near Cedar Hill, near Duncanville, and Mountain Creek Lake since 1969. This influence is indicated by the Aleutian Trench, the Aleutian chain of volcanoes, and a well developed Benioff zone of earthquakes. Crustal structure under the Kodiak Shelf is intermediate between continental and oceanic. The thickness of sedimentary rock is 8 ± 3 km, which is greater than beneath the island. The proposed lease—sale area is on a submerged shelf extending 100 km or more seaward from the Kodiak group of islands, and it is more than 400 km long. The Kodiak Shelf still retains a glacial topography which has been modified by tectonically uplifted banks along the shelf edge and across the shelf. These banks are readily detectable signs of recent tectonism. Not so easily detectable are three deep offshore Neogene basins formed by depression of an unsampled presumed Paleogene sedimentary section. The basin floors have subsided 5 to 7 km since middle (?) Miocene time; the basins are filled with late Miocene and younger sediment that is only gently deformed.</p><p><br>A sudden increase in seismic velocity occurs across the contact between the basin fill and the presumed Paleogene rocks that underlie it. This discontinuity in seismic velocity, the smooth character of the basin surface, and the truncation of dipping beds beneath it, are the basis for inferring subaerial erosion of the Paleogene section. If this inference is correct, the structure in some places requires at least 3000 m of subsidence followed by an uplift of even greater magnitude in Neogene time. The references are selected in the sense that mainly statistical reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and many annual and biennial reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, localities 16 to 22 in Menzie and Foster, 1979 (OF 78-529 D), p. 31). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement that the claims are not on valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposit that might be present. These samples, from water depths of 3,150 m to 200 m, combined with seismic reflection data, identify seven rock units in apparently normal stratigraphic position. From oldest to youngest they are: Unit A: Hard graywacke, argillite, and possible intrusive rocks of inferred Late Cretaceous age that crop out in the eastern part of the slope and probably underlie much of the Fairweather Ground. Unit B: At least 900 m of sandstone, conglomerate, shale, and subordinate basaltic volcanic rocks west of Yakutat Seavalley between 142° W. and 143° W. that is not dated but is probably of late Paleocene to early Eocene age. Unit C: 1,300 m of basaltic flow and pyroclastic rocks with associated clastic marine sedimentary rocks that makes up much of the rugged lower slope throughout the area. This sequence is largely, or entirely, of early Eocene age. Unit D: Up to 2,100 m of early and middle Eocene sandstone, conglomerate, siltstone, and tuffaceous organic-rich shale that partly overlies, and partly intertongues with, the volcanic unit. Unit E: 800 m of early to late Eocene and early Oligocene(?) organic-rich shale, tuffaceous shale, siltstone, and sandstone that partly intertongues with, and partly overlies units C and D. Unit F: 300+ m of siltstone, at least in part of late Oligocene age, that crops out locally along the upper slope where it unconformably overlies Unit E. Unit G: Up to 2,000 m of late Cenozoic (middle Miocene? and younger) clastic sedimentary rocks including abundant glaciomarine deposits that unconformably overlie all the older units.</p><p>The early Tertiary sequence sampled on the continental slope differs strikingly in lithology and structure from coeval rocks exposed onshore or penetrated in unsuccessful exploratory wells on the adjacent mainland. Units B, D, and E include abundant source rocks that have undergone a thermal history resulting in local generation of hydrocarbons. Sandstones from Units D and E locally have secondary porosities up to 31 percent and permeabilities to 36 md. Seismic reflection data indicate that the sequence with the most favorable source and reservoir potential (Units B, D, E) dips northeastward beneath OCS Lease Sale 55 where it could be a favorable exploratory target if involved in suitable traps. Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge. The descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Statewide, the principal cations in streamflow are calcium and sodium, and the principal anions are bicarbonate and sulfate. Calcium and bicarbonate usually predominate where mean specific conductance is less than 1,000 umho/cm, and sodium and sulfate predominate where the mean exceeds 1,000 umho/cm. Based on regression equations, dissolved solids, hardness, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, with some exceptions, correlate well with specific conductance for all stream sites. Illustrations of how regression equations may be used to estimate water quality of streamflow are given and are compared with values from actual analyses. To determine if impaired water-quality conditions existed, samples were collected at several sites above and below major point-source waste discharges near Burley, Idaho. Data collected for this study indicate some water-quality impairment within the study reach. At site 15 near Milner Dam, dissolved oxygen was below the 90-percent saturation standard prescribed by the Idaho water-quality standards. The total coliform and fecal coliform standards were exceeded at about one-third of the sites sampled on the main stem of the Snake River. Un-ionized ammonia concentration exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency water-quality criteria at one site near Burley.
