An upper basalt unit, an intermediate unconsolidated sedimentary rock unit, and a lower basalt unit were penetrated by the test hole. Drilling verified that the upper several hundred feet of high-resistivity material, as determined by surface electrical soundings, is basalt. Core examination, laboratory analysis, and correlation with other drill holes indicated that the basalt is typical of Quaternary basalt of the Snake River Group. Quaternary basalt in the test hole is 200 feet thick. Correlation with other drill holes and comparison with rock outcrops near the Snake River and in the Snake River canyon suggest that the underlying sediments and lower basalt unit are parts of the Tertiary and Quaternary Glenns Ferry Formation and Tertiary Banbury Basalt. Piezometers in the hole verify upward movement of water in a major discharge area for the regional aquifer. Hydraulic head in the bottom of the hole is about 155 feet higher than the water table. Lithologic sequence in the test hole correlates well with sequences in deep drill holes at scattered locations on the plain. The transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and specific yield were estimated for the part of the aquifer that discharges at Barton Springs in Austin. The aquifer is composed of the Edwards and overlying Georgetown Limestones of Cretaceous age and ranges in thickness from about 100 ft to about 450 ft.
\n
More than 60 years of discharge measurements and 5 years of gaged discharge for Barton Springs were used to adjust springflow for the simulations. Barton Springs accounts for about 96% of springflow from the study area and 90% of the total discharge. The remaining discharge was pumpage from wells which was entered in the model. Four years of gaged recharge were used in the simulations. The potentiometric surfaces used by the models were constructed from water level measurements in as many as 75 wells.
\n
The transmissivity was calibrated through steady-state simulations that used the mean value of recharge and mean potentiometric surface to represent average conditions for the aquifer. The transmissivities vary from about 100 sq ft/day in the western part of the aquifer to > 1 million sq ft/day near Barton Springs. Specific yield was calibrated through transient-state simulations for 5 consecutive months using time-dependent data for recharge, discharge, and water levels. The mean specific yield for the aquifer is 0.014 and ranges from 0.008 to 0.064. Additional aquifer properties used in the simulations include storage coefficient, altitudes of the base and top of the aquifer, and hydraulic conductivity.
\n
A simulation for the year 2000 using projected pumping rates for municipal, industrial, agricultural, and domestic supplies indicates that the aquifer would be dewatered in the southwestern part of the study area and have large declines in the southeastern part of the study area. Another simulation of projected conditions using potential recharge enhancement predicts a rise in the potentiometric surface of about 50 feet in the southwestern part of the aquifer and moderate water-level declines in the southeastern part of the aquifer.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri854299","usgsCitation":"Slade, R.M., Ruiz, L., and Slagle, D., 1985, Simulation of the flow system of Barton Springs and associated Edwards Aquifer in the Austin area, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 85-4299, vii, 49 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri854299.","productDescription":"vii, 49 p.","numberOfPages":"56","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":159322,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4299/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58555,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4299/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","city":"Austin","otherGeospatial":"Edwards Aquifer","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db6977e9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Slade, Raymond M. A three-dimensional, finite-difference, groundwater flow model was developed to: (1) Reproduce hydrologic conditions in the flow system between the Equus beds aquifer and the underlying Wellington aquifer from 1940 to 1980, and (2) simulate the effect that future withdrawals could have on water supply in the Equus beds aquifer and on relationships between water levels in the Equus beds aquifer and the Wellington aquifer from 1980 to 2020. The model favorably reproduced both measured water levels and streamflow gains in the Equus beds aquifer for 1971 and 1980, and measured water levels in the Wellington aquifer. The flow model then was used to simulate the effects of five pumping alternatives based on rates of withdrawal by wells from 1971-79. For the first alternative, withdrawal rates were decreased by one-half. Projected saturated thickness in the aquifer and streamflow gain were the greatest among the five alternatives. For the second alternative, withdrawal rates for 1971-79 were continued. Compared to results from the first alternative, saturated thickness was projected to decline from 10 to 40 ft in some areas, and streamflow gains were maintained for the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers. A two-dimensional, finite-difference, solute-transport model was developed to: (1) Reproduce the movement of chloride ion in part of the Equus beds aquifer, including the Wichita municipal well field, from 1940 to 1980, and (2) simulate the effect that future withdrawal rates could have on the concentration of chloride ion from 1980 to 2020. Sources of the chloride ion were oilfield brine disposed from 1932-43 that is moving toward the well field and water in the Arkansas River. Each simulation projected an increase in the concentration of chloride ion in the Wichita well field. The projections indicated that a continuous 1,000 mg/L source of chloride ion in streamflow losses from the Arkansas River had a greater effect on increasing chloride-ion concentrations in the Wichita well field than did the movement of residual oilfield brine. This report is a compilation of recent historical water-quality data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey on the Clark Fork and near the mouths of major tributaries. Included in the report are water-quality data collected during various time intervals since 1969 at 18 surface-water stations. Because of the large amount of streamflow and water-temperature data collected at these 18 stations and at other sites in the study area, the data are not included in the report. Groundwater chemical variations derive from the hydraulic characteristics is of the geohydrologic system, from groundwater basalt reactions, and from irrigation. Some dissolved species concentrations increase with residence time; others decrease. Recharge area groundwaters are calcium magnesium sodium bicarbonate waters with sodium-adsorption ratios (SAR's) less than 1.0. They evolve to sodium potassium bicarbonate waters with SAR 's as high as 17. Glassy and cryptocrystalline phases of the basalt are the main sources of dissolved sodium. They dissolve by silicate hydrolysis in carbon dioxide charged waters that recharge the aquifer system. Dissolved silicon, iron, and aluminum concentrations are controlled by the solubilities of amorphous secondary alteration products, which order to silica phases, oxyhydroxides, and smectite. Carbonate mineral precipitation is induced by increasing pH from the hydrolysis reaction. Sodium and potassium concentrations increase until clinoptilolite saturation is reached and precipitation begins. Deviations from the general variation patterns are due to localized geologic structures which distort the groundwater flow system, and to the irrigation use of Columbia River water. Calculated velocities for the time of maximum velocity in the tidal cycle ranged from 2.32 ft/sec near the bottom to 4.65 ft/sec near the surface of the sound in a cross section in the vicinity of a proposed wastewater outfall. Vertical velocity distributions calculated for the time of maximum velocity were similar at all stations at which velocities were measured except the station in shallow water near the shore. A recent bathymetric chart of the vicinity of the proposed outfall indicates that a bar extends farther along the northern shore of Hilton Head Island than indicated on earlier nautical charts of Port Royal Sound. Continued extension of this bar could alter the impact on water quality from discharge of treated wastewater into the sound. Further study may be needed to monitor changes in the bar if the outfall is located between the bar and Hilton Head Island. Conservative calculations based on the results of the dye tracer study indicate that the discharge of 10.9 million gallons/day of wastewater having concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solids of 15 mg/L will result in a maximum cumulative increase in concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand of < 0.01 mg/L and no increase in concentrations of suspended solids at high slack tide in the part of Port Royal Sound most affected by the proposed wastewater discharge. Generally (88 percent of the station years analyzed), more than 80 percent of the annual variability of temperatures of streams in the Upper Colorado River Basin was explained by the simple-harmonic function. Significant trends were determined for 6 of the 26 site records having 8 years or more record. In most cases, these trends resulted from construction and operation of upstream surface-water impoundments occurring during the period of record. Regional analysis of water-temperature characteristics at the 14 streamflow sites in the Piceance structural basin indicated similarities in water-temperature characteristics for a small range of measurement-site elevations. Evaluation of information content of the daily records indicated that less-than-daily measurement intervals should be considered, resulting in substantial savings in measurement and data-processing costs. Drill cuttings and water samples were collected, and water-level measurements and lithologic and geophysical logs were made. Deposits to a depth of 575 feet consist of sand, clayey sand, phosphatic sandy clay, coquina, sandy limestone, and dolostone. Below 575 feet, the deposits consist of fragmented and granular limestone, dolomitic limestone, and massive to finely crystalline dolostone, which comprise the Floridan aquifer system in the area. Water levels were measured near or at the bottom of the drill hole through the drill stem and in the annular space between the drilled hole and drill stem at the well head as drilling progressed from 770 to 2,112 feet in depth. Water levels measured through the drill stem ranged from 1.17 feet above land surface at a depth of 2,107 feet to 15.0 feet above land surface at a depth of 1,574 feet. Water levels measured in the annular space ranged from 7.5 feet above land surface at a depth of 770 feet to 14.9 feet at various depths from 1,574 to 1,721 feet. Chloride concentrations of water sampled through the drill stem from a depth of 711 to 1 ,616 feet ranged from 22 to 150 milligrams per liter at 1,648 feet. Chloride concentrations then ranged from 345 to about 800 milligrams per liter to a depth of 2,071 feet and then increased to a maximum of 5,450 milligrams per liter at 2,107 feet. This report is the third in a series covering a lake-sampling program that began in 1975. Data include water-column profiles of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance. Chemical, physical, and biological properties were measured at specific points in the water column, and selected physical and chemical properties also were measured in the principal inflows.\r\n\r\nThe lakes were predominatly hard (120 180 milligrams per liter) to very hard water, although several soft-water lakes were found in southeastern Ohio. Calcium, bicarbonate, and sulfate were the principal dissolved constituents. Specific conductance ranged from 103 micromhos per centimeter (at 25 degrees Celsius) at Tycoon Lake, 1978, to 2,550 micromhos per centimeter at West Fork Mill Creek Lake, 1978. Thirteen lakes had trace-element concentrations that were above the limits for exceptional warm-water habitat recammended by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.\r\n\r\nSeasonal thermal gradients developed in most lakes deeper than 17 feet. Oxygen concentrations were zero or near zero during the summer sampling of the bottom water of all lakes having definite thermal gradients. Most anaerobic zones contained hydrogen sulfide and high concentrations of ammonia.\r\n\r\nAll lakes were evaluated and classified by Carlson's trophic state index. Most of the lakes were classified as eutrophic. Blue-green algae (CyanophytaJ) dominated the summer algal communities. Fecal colifrom counts were within Ohio standards, although high (more than 1,000 colonies per 100 milliliters) fecal colifrom and fecal streptococcus counts were observed in West Fork Mill Creek Lake after significant runoff.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr84249","usgsCitation":"Angelo, C., and Youger, J.D., 1985, Chemical and biological quality of selected lakes in Ohio, 1978 and 1979: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-249, xii, 306 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr84249.","productDescription":"xii, 306 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146331,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0249/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":40720,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0249/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e1e4b07f02db5e48d3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Angelo, C.G.","contributorId":27434,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Angelo","given":"C.G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166181,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Youger, John D.","contributorId":46961,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Youger","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166182,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The project has been divided into three phases; this report presents the results of the first phase that characterizes current water quality data collection activities in Colorado and Ohio, including costs of sample analysis, and identifies those data potentially applicable and readily available for addressing selected water quality questions of regional and national scope. An estimated $63 million was spent during 1984 in the two States for only the laboratory analysis of water quality samples. For many agencies, total program costs are believed to be more than twice the laboratory costs. About four times more samples were reported for Ohio than for Colorado. Water quality data collection programs were tested against a set of five screening criteria. In Colorado, 34 percent of all samples met all five criteria; whereas, in Ohio, 5 percent of all samples met all five criteria. In Colorado, analyses from 114,300 samples (34 percent of the total), and in Ohio, analyses from 57,000 samples (5 percent of the total) potentially are applicable and readily available for addressing water quality questions of regional and national scope. These samples represent about $8 million in estimated laboratory costs. To investigate the possibility, wells were installed to obtain geologic data and water samples for chemical analysis; analysis also was made of concurrent related data collected by other agencies.

The principal rock units are glacial deposits and the Saginaw Formation. Glacial deposits, 75 to 175 feet thick, are primarily clay underlain in places by sand and gravel. This sand and gravel is the primary source of ground water. Underlying the glacial deposits is the Saginaw Formation--a unit that is mostly shale and silty shale containing beds of siltstone, sandstone, and coal.

Specific conductance of water from wells indicate that dissolved-solids concentration increases with depth. About 50 percent of specific conductance values of water from wells more than 100 feet deep were equal to or greater than 5,000 microsiemens, whereas only 13 percent of the values of water from wells less than 100 feet deep were equal to or greater than 5,000 microsiemens.

Results of chemical analyses indicate no apparent correlation between concentration and source for most constituents. Plots of chloride/sulfate ratios versus specific conductances indicate that water from the Saginaw Formation is as likely to influence the quality of water in glacial deposits as is water from abandoned mines.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Lansing, MI","doi":"10.3133/wri854110","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Michigan Department of Natural Resources Geological Survey Division, Monitor Township, Bay County, Williams Township, Bay County","usgsCitation":"Twenter, F.R., and Cummings, T., 1985, Quality of ground water in Monitor and Williams Townships, Bay County, Michigan: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 85-4110, vi, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri854110.","productDescription":"vi, 41 p.","costCenters":[{"id":382,"text":"Michigan Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":160499,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4110/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59044,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4110/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","county":"Bay County","otherGeospatial":"Monitor Township, Williams Township","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -84.10720825195312,\n 43.68326696566219\n ],\n [\n -84.10961151123047,\n 43.56795428674552\n ],\n [\n -84.0509033203125,\n 43.56720801094054\n ],\n [\n -84.0509033203125,\n 43.524406070549084\n ],\n [\n -83.91426086425781,\n 43.523410314985455\n ],\n [\n -83.91666412353516,\n 43.56521789692485\n ],\n [\n -83.91494750976562,\n 43.62538975719009\n ],\n [\n -83.91254425048828,\n 43.66960999321696\n ],\n [\n -83.91082763671875,\n 43.67358325124029\n ],\n [\n -83.91220092773438,\n 43.67581809328341\n ],\n [\n -83.91597747802733,\n 43.68003923450592\n ],\n [\n -84.0127944946289,\n 43.681777265168094\n ],\n [\n -84.10720825195312,\n 43.68326696566219\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a8fe4b07f02db654b3f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Twenter, F. The Bi-City WWTP is operated by the Cities of Littleton and Englewood. The model was calibrated from a 14.5 mile reach for 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand, organic, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate using data collected during September 1983. Model verification was completed using data collected during October 1982 and January 1984 for all constituents except nitrite nitrogen. Nitrite nitrogen could not be verified for the cold temperature conditions of January of 1984. Measured benthic sediment oxygen demand used in model ranged from 1.01 to 2.77 grams per square meter per day. Model simulations were made for an estimated 7-day, 10-year discharge of 18 cubic feet per second, upstream from the outfall of the WWTP. Two groups of simulations were made for both warm and cold temperature conditions. In the first group of simulation variations were made in effluent 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand concentrations and flow rates. The second group of simulations varied the amount of nitrogen discharged as ammonia and nitrate. The extent of the mixing zone downstream of the WWTP outfall was determined by injecting Rhodamine WT dye into the effluent. The mixing zone was found to extend 0.8 miles during low-flow conditions. Self-supplied, domestic water use of 31,280 acre-ft in Nebraska during 1980 was computed from estimates of gal/day/capita use for each county. This represents an average of 95 gal/day/capita. During 1980, county use volumes ranged from 30 acre-ft in Hooker and Pawnee Counties to 1,380 acre-ft in Douglas County, and Hydrologic Unit use volumes ranged from < 5 acre-ft to 2,270 acre-ft. Natural Resources Districts ' (NRD) use volumes ranged from 360 acre-ft in Middle Niobrara NRD to 3,530 acre-feet in the Lower Elkhorn NRD for the same period.
