Igneous rocks range from basalt to dacite and yielded K-Ar ages of 48 to 22 m.y. The Meshik arc is oriented along the trend of the Alaska Peninsula, subparallel to the present-day Aleutian arc. Rocks of the Meshik arc are emplaced on Cenozoic, Mesozoic, and older clastic sedimentary rocks of the Alaska Peninsula terrane. Tectonic interpretation suggests: a) the arc represents a relatively stationary period in the otherwise mobile migration of the Alaska Peninsula terrane, b) subduction was an important process along the Alaska Peninsula during Tertiary time, and c) most migration of the Alaska Peninsula terrane since Cretaceous time took place in Paleocene and middle Miocene time.
","language":"English","publisher":"Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys","publisherLocation":"Fairbanks, AK","doi":"10.14509/2269","usgsCitation":"Wilson, F.H., 1985, The Meshik Arc: An eocene to earliest miocene magmatic arc on the Alaska Peninsula: Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys Professional Reports DGGS PR 88, iii, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.14509/2269.","productDescription":"iii, 14 p.","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480157,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.14509/2269","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":341373,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Alaska Peninsula","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -166.201171875,\n              55.05320258537112\n            ],\n            [\n              -163.828125,\n              53.48804553605622\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.02880859375,\n              58.938673187948304\n            ],\n            [\n              -154.6435546875,\n              60.28340847828243\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.201171875,\n              55.05320258537112\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"591c0fcfe4b0a7fdb43ddf1c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilson, Frederic H. 0000-0003-1761-6437 fwilson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1761-6437","contributorId":67174,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"Frederic","email":"fwilson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":695391,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In particular, the geohydrology of northern Long Valley, New Jersey, was investigated. Geohydrologic data were collected and analyzed to characterize the site. Analysis was accomplished by interpreting the available data and by using a numerical simulation of the watertable aquifer. Special attention was given to the estimation of hydraulic conductivity values and hydraulic conductivity structure which together define the hydraulic conductivity of the modeled aquifer. Hydraulic conductivity and all other aspects of the system were first estimated using the trial-and-error method of calibration. The estimation of hydraulic conductivity was improved using a least squares method to estimate hydraulic conductivity values and by improvements in the parameter structure. These efforts improved the calibration of the model far more than a preceding period of similar effort using the trial-and-error method of calibration. In addition, the proposed method provides statistical information on the reliability of estimated hydraulic conductivity values, calculated heads, and calculated flows. The methodology developed and applied in this work proved to be of substantial value in the evaluation of the aquifer considered.
","language":"English","publisher":"Princeton University","usgsCitation":"Hill, M.C., 1985, An investigation of hydraulic conductivity estimation in a ground-water flow study of Northern Long Valley, New Jersey, 364.","productDescription":"364","costCenters":[{"id":493,"text":"Office of Ground Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":343839,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5969d82fe4b0d1f9f060a1b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hill, Mary C. mchill@usgs.gov","contributorId":974,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hill","given":"Mary","email":"mchill@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":704962,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Although the impacts of irrigation activities on quality and quantity of river water are well documented (e.g., high turbidity from soil erosion, eutrophication from nutrient runoff, pesticide contamination, reduced dis- charge), their effects on fish populations are still poorly understood. We studied the food, growth, and relative weight (a measure of body condition) of bluegills, Lepo- mis macrochirus, in relation to environmental factors in reaches of the San Joaquin and Merced rivers that have been affected to varying degrees by irrigation return flows. Fry of bluegills ate mostly cladocerans and copepods; fingerlings and larger fish ate immature aquatic insects, terrestrial insects, amphipods, and mollusks. Bluegill stomachs were fuller and contained a higher diversity of forage taxa in habitats with low turbidity and conductivity, weak buffering capacity, and low nutrient levels; bluegills also ate a more diverse diet where the potential forage supply (benthic macroinvertebrates) was most diverse. Bluegills attained mean total lengths of about 42 mm at age I, 86 mm at age 11, 116 mm at age III, 153 mm at age IV, and 166 mm at age V. Mean relative weight ranged from 96-111. Growth rate and relative weight were not significantly correlated with environmental or dietary variables. On the basis of our study, we concluded that environmental degradation from irrigation activities affected the diet of bluegills primarily by modifying the food supply, but growth rate and body condition were not affected.
","language":"English","publisher":"California Department of Fish and Game","usgsCitation":"Saiki, M.K., and Schmitt, C., 1985, Population biology of bluegills, Lepomis macrochirus, in lotic habitats on the irrigated San Joaquin Valley floor: California Fish and Game, v. 71, no. 4, p. 225-244.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"225","endPage":"244","costCenters":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":348359,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Joaquin Valley floor","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -121.95373535156249,\n 38.14751758025121\n ],\n [\n -120.75622558593749,\n 36.47872381162464\n ],\n [\n -119.0643310546875,\n 36.50963615733049\n ],\n [\n -120.6683349609375,\n 38.14319750166766\n ],\n [\n -121.95373535156249,\n 38.14751758025121\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"71","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a082a52e4b09af898c8ea21","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Saiki, M. The mean concentrations of total DDT and allp,p′-ho-mologs exceptp,p′-DDT showed significant but small declines relative to mean concentrations before 1978–79. The mean concentration ofp,p′-DDT did not change. The most persistent DDT homolog (p,p′-DDE) continued to constitute about 70% of total DDT residues, as it did in 1974–79. DDT contamination attributable to former DDT manufacturing facilities remained evident at sites in Alabama and Arkansas, and high concentrations at one site in Hawaii suggested that input to the environment was continuing. Conversely, the data do not support the contention of others that DDT was still being used in the Southwest. Residues of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) remained widespread, but a significant downward trend in total PCBs was evident, especially in areas that the NPMP has previously shown to be the most heavily contaminated. Mean concentrations of dieldrin had not changed since 1978–79, and levels remained highest in Hawaii and in the Great Lakes. Toxaphene concentrations plateaued after a period of steady increase through the 1970's, but the incidence of toxaphene continued to increase; residues were present at 88% of the stations sampled in 1980–81, including one in Alaska (most likely as a consequence of atmospheric transport). Mean chlordane concentrations were slightly lower than in 1978–79, and residues were detected at fewer stations in 1980–81 than in 1978–79. Residues of other organochlorines [e.g., mirex, pentachloroanisole (PCA), benzene hexachloride (BHC) isomers, endrin, heptachlor, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), Dacthal® (DCPA)2, and methoxychlor] were either found at relatively few (<25%) of the stations sampled in 1980–81 or were characterized by relatively low concentrations.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF01055615","usgsCitation":"Schmitt, C.J., Zajicek, J.L., and Ribick, M.A., 1985, In the absence of gravity, asthenosphere relaxation eventually permits the faulted lithosphere to assume the dihedral configuration of a faulted free plate. For thrust faulting, the faulted area is depressed into the asthenosphere, and the flanks of the plate slope uniformly upward. In the presence of gravity, buoyancy forces act upon the plate, and the ultimate (t→∞) postseismic uplift is approximated (y/α > 0.2) by w1 exp (−y/α) (cos y/α ‐ sin y/α), where w1 is an explicit function of the fault parameters and lithosphere properties, y is the horizontal distance from the downdip end of the fault, and α is the flexural parameter for the lithosphere plate. The relaxed‐asthenosphere response is the sum of the coseismic deformation (unrelaxed‐astheriosphere response) and this ultimate postseismic deformation. The annual, steady deformation associated with strain accumulation at a subduction zone is simply the relaxed‐asthenosphere response to virtual, normal slip on the main thrust zone of an amount equal to the annual plate convergence. From these relations we have estimated the deformation (strain and uplift) expected along the Pacific coast of northern Honshu. Breeding coots can be ages through age 3 by tarsal color (birds 4 years and older were placed in a 4+ age class) (Crawford 1978), and males and females have sex-specific behaviors and calls while on breeding territories (Gullion 1950, 1952). Externally, juvenile coots differ from adults in having gray (as opposed to white) bills and brown (as opposed to red) eyes to an age of 75 days (Gullion 1954-394). Bill color changes to white by about 120 days. No quantitative data have been available, however, on the proportion of juveniles retaining these traits throughout fall and early winter. Nonbreeding coots can be ages as juvenile or adult by internal examination of the thickness of the wall of the bursa of Fabricius, although bursal depth does not predictably decline with age (Fredrickson 1968).
\n
\n
Attempts to sex coots by single external measurements of combinations of measurements have met with mixed success. Eight-five percent of 101 fall migrants in Wisconsin could be sexed by the length of the metatarsus-midtoe including claw by using 139.5 mm as a cutoff point (Burton 1959), whereas 88% of 67 coots in California were correctly sexed by the length of the metatarsus-midtoe without claw using 127.5 mm as the cutoff point (Gullion 1952). Two-hundred-thirty-two of 291 coots collected in Iowa, however, were in the zone of overlap between the sexes for this measurement (Fredrickson 1968).
\n
\n
Previous studies attempting to develop aging and sexing techniques for American Coots have been limited to a few study sites or to 1 season or year, often failing to take geographical, annual, and seasonal morphological variation into account (e.g., Visser 1976, Fjeldsa 1977). Analysis of variance tests showed significant differences among the average predawn xylem pressure potential (ψp) of species in several community types. However, additional analyses failed to indicate a significant degree of association between averaged predawn Yp measurements and either floristic ordination or site water balance results. Sixty eight percent of 22 trials comparing the diurnal average ψp of the same species in different community types on the same day were less negative for a species in the wetter community types as predicted by floristic ordinations. Similarly, 64% of the trials indicated that the diurnal average stomatal conductance was higher for a species in the wetter type. These results suggest that although a floodplain moisture gradient exists, it alone does not limit the distribution of floodplain plant communities in the North Fork.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wetlands","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Society of Wetland Scientists","publisherLocation":"McClean, VA","doi":"10.1007/BF03160785","usgsCitation":"Lee, L., Hinckley, T., and Scott, M.L., 1985, Plant water status relationships among major floodplain sites of the Flathead River, Montana: Wetlands, v. 5, no. 1, p. 15-34, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF03160785.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"15","endPage":"34","numberOfPages":"20","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":292441,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":292440,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF03160785"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","otherGeospatial":"Flathead River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -114.309882,48.057693 ], [ -114.309882,48.393746 ], [ -114.083081,48.393746 ], [ -114.083081,48.057693 ], [ -114.309882,48.057693 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"5","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53f25feae4b0333418718941","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, L.C.","contributorId":7194,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"L.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":498621,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hinckley, T.M.","contributorId":37656,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hinckley","given":"T.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":498622,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Scott, M. Ducks and coots use similar nesting, feeding, brooding, and loafing sites during the breeding season (Munro 1939, Sooter 1945, Ryder 1959). Coots create potential nest sites, repulse predators, provide predation buffers for ducks (Sooter 1945; Ryder 1958, 1959), and may also destroy eggs and young of other marsh-nesting birds (Munro 1937, Burger 1973, McNicholl 1975). Coots, ducks, and swans often feed cooperatively (Ryder 1959, Anderson 1974, Ryan 1981); and American Wigeon (Anas americana) and Gadwell (<A. strepera) may rob feeding coots (Knapton and Knudsen 1978, Ryan 1981). Interspecies aggression between coots and waterfowl usually occurs when ducks approach coot nests or broods (Ryan and Dinsmore 1979). Despite these interactions, the numbers of duck broods produced in areas in Utah with nesting coots and in areas where coots have been removed were similar (Ryder 1958, 1961). Densities of coots and ducks, and brood counts of coots and ducks for a 26-year period in Saskatchewan also indicated no significant relationship between numbers of coots and waterfowl (Nudds 1981).
\n
\n
Coots and waterfowl from large areas of breeding habitat concentrate on smaller areas during the nonbreeding season (Weller 1975:102). These species may also change diets and habitats during migration and while wintering (Weller 1975). This study documents associations between waterfowl and coots during fall migration and examines feeding and behavioral interactions between coots and waterfowl in mixed flocks. Specifically, we (1) describe temporal and spatial overlap among migrations of coots and waterfowl, (2) present behavioral interactions among species, and (3) document food habits of birds feeding sympatrically during fall migration in Oklahoma.
","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wilson Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Wilson Ornithological Society","publisherLocation":"Lawrence, KS","usgsCitation":"Eddleman, W.R., Patterson, C.T., and Knopf, F., 1985, Interspecific relationships between American coots and waterfowl during fall migration: The Wilson Bulletin, v. 97, no. 4, p. 463-472.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"463","endPage":"472","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":292417,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"97","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53f25fe6e4b0333418718926","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eddleman, William R.","contributorId":40685,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eddleman","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":498551,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Patterson, Craig T.","contributorId":15940,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Patterson","given":"Craig","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":498549,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Knopf, Fritz L.","contributorId":30549,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knopf","given":"Fritz L.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":498550,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
