Ground water is stored in fractures within shale and mudstone formations and in intergranular pore spaces within fine- to very fine-grained sandstone and siltstone formations. Fewer than 10% of the wells yield more than 15 gallons of water per minute. The water in most wells is moderately hard to very hard, is generally of a sodium bicarbonate or calcium bicarbonate type, and commonly has excessive concentrations of iron or manganese. The solution approach to the convective-diffusion equation uses a moving reference frame (Lagrangian) which greatly simplifies the mathematics of the solution procedure and dramatically reduces errors caused by numerical dispersion. The solution procedure has the further advantages, relative to conventional Eulerian solution schemes, of being easy to understand in the physical sense, of being extremely stable numerically, and of providing an accounting system which is very useful for model calibration.</p><p>The model documentation is presented as a series of four programs of increasing complexity. The conservative transport model can be used to route a single conservative substance, such as dye, through a reach of a river. The simplified temperature model is used to predict water temperature in rivers, either with or without thermal loading, when few meteorological data are available. Only equilibrium temperature and windspeed are required. It is suggested that air temperature can be used to approximate equilibrium temperature. The complete temperature model is highly accurate but requires rather complete meteorological data. Finally, the 10-parameter model can be used to route as many as 10 interacting constituents through a river reach. The mathematical description of the interaction between the constituents, which does not need to be linear, is generally up to the user to supply. An example problem is solved for a three-parameter system involving temperature, dissolved oxygen, and biochemical oxygen demand.</p><p>For simplicity, all models are developed and presented assuming steady non-uniform flow. Generalization of the models to allow unsteady flow is extremely simple, involving the addition of no more than 18 cards to the program deck. The report is concluded by describing this generalization for any of the models. Before using the models with unsteady flow, a flow model must be used to calculate and store the necessary flow data at each cross section and time step. Such a flow model is available and documented.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri812","usgsCitation":"Jobson, H.E., 1980, Temperature and solute-transport simulation in streamflow using a Lagrangian reference frame: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 81-2, ix, 165 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri812.","productDescription":"ix, 165 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":359109,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1981/0002/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158708,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1981/0002/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adae4b07f02db685762","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jobson, Harvey E.","contributorId":27032,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jobson","given":"Harvey","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198861,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report updates a previous report with 2 years of additional data collection and presents statistics and regression equations for water-quality variables. The most apparent feature of the study is the variability of water quality. Time-trend differences are most noticeable, with areal differences being present but more subtle. In comparing stations at the mouths of the five major drainages entering the Yellowstone River from the study area, water from the Powder River ranks near the middle of the group in dissolved-solids concentration (mean of 1,390 mg/L), but far exceeds the other drainages in suspended-sediment concentration, often exceeding 10,000 mg/L. The Tongue River generally has the best overall quality with respect to dissolved constituents; extremes are moderated by mixing in the Tongue River Reservoir. Suspended sediment ranged from 5 to 4,360 mg/L. Rosebud Creek shows about a 50-percent average increase in dissolved-solids concentration from the most upstream station to the mouth. Armells and Sarpy Creeks, smallest of the five drainages, have a pool-riffle configuration that influences both dissolved and suspended constituents. Aerial photographs taken in 1957 and a sequence of photographs taken at about 2-month intervals since 1976, when analyzed photogrammetrically, provided detailed data on changes in Columbia Glacier's thickness, flow rate, and terminal position. Annual embayments in the glacier 's terminus form during the summer-autumn season in most years; the size of embayments appears to be related to (1) the thickness of the glacier, and (2) the position and nature of subglacial freshwater discharge. Embayments have apparently increased in size in recent years; the largest embayments yet observed formed in 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1978. From April 1, 1977, to April 1, 1978, the total volume of ice calved was about 1.0 cubic kilometer. By January 1979 the glacier front had retreated from Heather Island. Glacier flow varies seasonally and synchronously in the lower 17 kilometers of the glacier; large accelerations occur near the terminus in response to embayment formation. Daily speed within 5 kilometers of the terminus increased from about 1.9 meters per day between 1963 and 1968 to about 2.7 meters per day between 1977 and 1978. In the lowest 15 kilometers, the glacier surface was lowered about 9 meters between 1957 and 1974, and about 13 meters between 1974 and 1978. Western United States. Although the milling process yields a uranium concentrate, the large volume of tailings remaining contains about 85 percent of the radioactivity originally associated with the ore. By virtue of the physical and chemical processing of the ore and the redistribution of the contained radionuclides at the Earth's surface, these tailings constitute a technologically enhanced source of natural radiation exposure. Sources of potential human radiation exposure from uranium mill tailings include the emanation of radon gas, the transport of particles by wind and water, and the transport of soluble radionuclides, seeping from disposal areas, by ground water. Due to the 77,000 year half-life of thorium-230, the parent of radium-226, the environmental effects associated with radionuclides contained in these railings must be conceived of within the framework of geologic processes operating over geologic time. The magnitude of erosion of cover materials and tailings and the extent of geochemical mobilization of the contained radionuclides to the atmosphere and hydrosphere should be considered in the evaluation of the potential, long-term consequences of all proposed uranium mill tailings management plans.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir814","usgsCitation":"Landa, E., 1980, Isolation of uranium mill tailings and their component radionuclides from the biosphere; some earth science perspectives: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 814, iii, 32 p. :ill., map ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir814.","productDescription":"iii, 32 p. :ill., map ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124670,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0814/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30808,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0814/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9fe4b07f02db660e2e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Landa, Edward","contributorId":100368,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Landa","given":"Edward","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147523,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Areas flooded by the regional flood and by the 500-year flood were delineated by photogrammetric mapping techniques and are shown on seven large-scale map sheets. Over 1,300 acres of flood plain are included in the cities of Anoka, Champlin, Coon Rapids, Dayton, Ramsey and Elk River, and in unincorporated areas of Wright County. The flood-outline maps and flood profiles comprise data needed by local units of government to adopt, enforce, and administer flood-plain management regulations along the Mississippi River throughout the study reach. Streamflow data from two gaging stations provided the basis for definition of the regional and 500-year floods. Cross-section data obtained at 83 locations were used to develop a digital computer model of the river. Flood elevation and discharge data from the 1965 flood provided a basis for adjusting the computer model. To determine if impaired water-quality conditions existed, samples were collected at several sites above and below major point-source waste discharges near Burley, Idaho. Data collected for this study indicate some water-quality impairment within the study reach. At site 15 near Milner Dam, dissolved oxygen was below the 90-percent saturation standard prescribed by the Idaho water-quality standards. The total coliform and fecal coliform standards were exceeded at about one-third of the sites sampled on the main stem of the Snake River. Un-ionized ammonia concentration exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency water-quality criteria at one site near Burley. The work was done as part of a geohydrologic study, the results of which are reported in the 1973 U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 486-H; Geohydrology of the Yuma Area, Arizona and California, by Olmsted, Loeltz, and Irelan. Most of the logs are plotted from temperatures measured with two Whitney thermistors at depth intervals of 2 to 20 feet in downward succession in each well or test hole, using land surface as datum. A few logs were made with a truck-mounted wireline logger using thermistor probes and continuously recording equipment. All measurements were in degrees Fahrenheit, later converted to degrees Celsius, and were calibrated with a mercury-in-glass thermometer. Accuracy of most of the measurements was + or - 1.0F and precision was about + or - 0.2F. The survey area is located in the central part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, within parts of Iron, Baraga, and Dickinson Counties. The general area covered is between 46°00' and 46°30' latitude and 88°00' and 88°30' longitude (fig. 1).</p><p>The INPUT survey was flown as part of a U.S. Geological Survey CUSMAP (Conterminous United States Mineral Appraisal Program) project focusing on the Iron River 2° quadrangle. The survey was flown in order to provide geophysical information which will aid in an integrated geological assessment of&nbsp;mineral potentials of this part of the Iron River 2° quadrangle. The flight line spacing was chosen to maximize the areal coverage without a loss of resolution of major lithologic and structural features.</p><p>East-west flight lines were flown 400 feet above ground at 1/2 mile intervals. Aerial photos were used for navigation, and the flight path was recorded on continuous-strip film. A continuously recording total field ground magnetic station was used to monitor variations in the Earth's magnetic field. One north-south line was flown to provide a tie for the magnetic data, which was recorded simultaneously with the electromagnetic data by a sensor mounted in the tail of the aircraft. </p><p>This report is one of two open-file reports. The map in the other report Heran and Smith (1980) shows locations of the fiducial points, the flight lines, preliminary locations of anomalies and conductive zones; all plotted on an air photomosaic. The latitude and longitude ticks marked on this map are only approximate due to distortion in air photos used to recover the flight line position. This map is preliminary and is not to be considered a final interpretation. The present report contains a description of the instrument specifications, a copy of the ground station magnetic data, and a record of the electromagnetic and magnetic data, with reference to the digital data of the flight records. The purpose of two reports is to make the analog and magnetic records available separate from the anomaly map. </p><p>The following sections on the general description of the INPUT system are abridged from a typical interpretation report prepared by Geoterrex Limited of Ottawa, Canada for the U.S. Geological Survey. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80296","usgsCitation":"Heran, W.D., and Smith, B.D., 1980, Instrument specifications and geophysical records for airborne electromagnetic survey of parts of Iron, Baraga, and Dickson Counties, Michigan: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-296, iii, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80296.","productDescription":"iii, 16 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":349502,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0296/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":162041,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0296/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","county":"Baraga County, Dickinson County, Iron County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.75,\n              46\n            ],\n            [\n              -88,\n              46\n            ],\n            [\n              -88,\n              47\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.75,\n              47\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.75,\n              46\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e4e4b07f02db5e6699","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Heran, William D. wheran@usgs.gov","contributorId":2246,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Heran","given":"William","email":"wheran@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":237611,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, Bruce D. 0000-0002-1643-2997 bsmith@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1643-2997","contributorId":845,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Bruce","email":"bsmith@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":237610,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
