The study area lies between Great South Channel to the east and Black Channel to the west, and extends from the 50-m isobath to the shelf edge.

Single-channel high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and echo-sounding profiles were collected along 941 km of trackline, sidescan sonar records were collected along 673 km of trackline. The subbottom profiles were collected by using a Huntec*system that was towed at midwater depths. Filters were set at 1 to 7 kHz. Echo-sounding records were collected by using a 60 kHz EDO Western system. A Klein stdescan sonar, set to scan 100 m to either side of the towed fish, was used to collect the sonographs.

Navigation during the survey was done by the scientific staff using Loran-C equipment. Fixes were recorded and logged at least every 15 minutes; after the cruise, they were digitized and stored on magnetic tape.

The original records can be seen and studied at the U.S. Geological Survey Data Library at Woods Hole, MA 02543. Microfilm copies of the subbottom, echosounding, and sidescan sonar records collected during the cruise can be purchased from the National Geophysical and Solar-Terrestrial Data Center, NOAA (National Oceanic ancl Atmosphere Administration), Boulder, CO 80302.
","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr80177","usgsCitation":"Twichell, D.C., 1980, Single-channel seismic-reflection profiles and sidescan sonar records collected during May 15-20, 1978, on the southern New England continental shelf: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-177, 3 p., 1 leaf of plates :map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80177.","productDescription":"3 p., 1 leaf of plates :map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":259883,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0177/ofr1980177.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.58 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1980-177"},{"id":145690,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr80177.PNG"}],"contact":"
Coastal and Marine Geology Program
U.S. Geological Survey
384 Woods Hole Road
Woods Hole, MA 02543
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f6e4b07f02db5f17bb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Twichell, David C.","contributorId":37730,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Twichell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":163236,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Water samples were obtained both from interstitial pores in core sections and from free-flowing fractures. Cation com- positions showed that calcium and magnesium decreased as a function of depth in the mesa, as sodium increased. The maximum effect occurs within alteration zones containing clinoptilolite and montmorillonite, suggesting these minerals effectively remove bivalent cations from the system. \r\n\r\nComparisons are made between compositions of ground waters found within Rainier Mesa that apparently have not reacted with secondary minerals and compositions of waters produced by experimental dissolution of vitric and crystalline tufts which comprise the principal aquifers in the area. The two tuff phases have the same bulk chemistry but produce aqueous solutions of different chemistry. Rapid parabolic dissolution of sodium and silica from, and the retention of, potassium within the vitric phase verify previous predictions concerning water compositions associated with vitric volcanic rocks. Parabolic dissolution of the crystalline phase results in solutions high in calcium and magnesium and low in silica. Extrapolation of the parabolic dissolution mechanism for the vitric tuff to long times successfully reproduces, at com- parable pH, cation ratios existing in Rainier Mesa ground water. Comparison of mass- transfer rates of the vitric and crystalline tuffs indicates that the apparent higher glass-surface to aqueous-volume ratio associated with the vitric rocks may account for dominance of the glass reaction.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The model was calibrated and verified using hydraulic and water-quality data collected in 1976 and 1979. The water-quality con-stituents modeled were 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand, total organic nitrogen, total ammonia, total nitrite, total nitrate, and dissolved oxygen. Model calibration was acceptable for all constituents except total organic nitrogen, and verification was acceptable for all constituents except total organic nitrogen and total nitrite. A relationship between nonionized and total ammonia was defined to provide simulation capability for nonionized ammonia.

The model was used to simulate the water-quality effects of 63 combinations of wastewater treatment. The water-quality effects were evaluated with respect to water-quality guidelines that may be applied based on possible stream-use classifications. Model simulations were based on a 7-day low flow with a 10-year recurrence interval that occurs between August 15 and October 15 and on a winter low-flow period that occurs as a result of upstream storage of water.

The mixing zone downstream from the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant outfall was evaluated to determine where the water-quality guidelines should apply for the model simulations. Complete lateral mixing of the effluent from the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant occurred 2.7 river miles downstream from the outfall.

Model simulations indicated a water-quality guideline of 0.06 milligram per liter nonionized ammonia nitrogen would be exceeded at the end of the mixing zone for Q7,10 conditions with secondary treatment at the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant and a projected effluent discharge for the year 2000, and that a water-quality guideline of 0.5 milligram per liter total nitrite nitrogen would be exceeded for winter conditions and the same waste-water-treatment possibility. Wastewater-treatment possibilities with a pro-jected discharge for the year 2000 which would result in both water-quality guidelines being met include land application of treated effluent and advanced secondary treatment at the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant with conversion of ammonia to nitrate to result in an effluent total ammonia nitrogen concentration of 5.4 to 10.6 milligrams per liter, depending on the quality of effluent from the downstream discharge from the CF&I Steel Corp.

Model simulations also included an evaluation of flow augmentation necessary to meet a water-quality guideline of 0.06 milligram per liter non-ionized ammonia nitrogen. The evaluation was made for the n,7,10 period, secondary treatment at the Pueblo Wastewater Treatment Plant with a projected discharge for the year 2000, and effluent water quality at a downstream discharge which could contain twice the estimated ammonia concentration allowable for best available technology treatment for the iron and steel industry. The flow augmentation necessary to meet the water-quality guideline, based on the model simulations, is approximately 140 cubic feet per second.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8082","usgsCitation":"Cain, D., Baldridge, D., and Edelmann, P., 1980, Waste-assimilation capacity of the Arkansas River in Pueblo County, Colorado, as it relates to water-quality guidelines and stream classification: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-82, vii, 104 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8082.","productDescription":"vii, 104 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158308,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0082/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":359114,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0082/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Pueblo County","otherGeospatial":"Arkansas River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.76150512695312,\n              38.135636748588574\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.09957885742188,\n              38.135636748588574\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.09957885742188,\n              38.36534867623901\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.76150512695312,\n              38.36534867623901\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.76150512695312,\n              38.135636748588574\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd46a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cain, Doug","contributorId":101655,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cain","given":"Doug","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196443,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Baldridge, Duaina","contributorId":100889,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baldridge","given":"Duaina","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196442,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Edelmann, Patrick","contributorId":86305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edelmann","given":"Patrick","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196441,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Maximum displacements measured by us were about 25 mm of right slip (including afterslip through 28 January); vertical components of as much as 50 mm were seen locally, but these included gravity effects of unknown amount. The main break within the Greenville fault zones is very close to a fault strand mapped by Herd (1977, and unpublished data). A subsidiary break within the Greenville fault zone was about 0.5 km. long, had a general trend of N.46°W., and lay 0.12 to 0.25 km east of the main break. It was characterized by extension of as much as 40 mm and right slip of as much as 20 mm. This break was no more than 25 m from a fault mapped by Herd (unpublished data). Another break within the Greenville fault zone lay about 0.3 km southwest of the projection of the main break and trended about N33°W. It was at least 0.3 km long and showed mostly extension, but at several places a right-lateral component (up to 5 mm) was seen. This break was 80 to 100 m from a strand of the Greenville fault mapped by Herd (1977). Extensional fractures within the Greenville fault zone on the frontage roads north and south of Interstate Highway 580 may be related to regional extension or other processes, but do not seem to have resulted from faulting of the usual kind. One exception in this group is a fracture at the east side of Livermore valley which showed progressive increase in right-lateral displacement in February and March, 1980, and is directly on the projection of a fault in the Greenville fault zone mapped by Herd (1977). A group of more than 20 extensional fractures in Laughlin Road 1 km north of Interstate 580 probably are related to small tectonic displacements on faults in the Greenville fault zone. They are adjacent and parallel to two faults mapped by Herd (1977), are diagonal to the road, and most of them developed between 25 and 29 January, a period that included the Ms 5.2 shock of 26 January. Observations at two locations indicate tectonic displacement on the Las Positas fault zone as mapped by Herd (1977). At Vasco Road a prominent break on a strand of the fault showed about 0.5 mm of left-lateral strike slip on 7 February. An alinement array across this and other fractures at the locality indicates about 6 mm of left-lateral displacement occurred between 21 February and 26 March. On Tesla Road several right-stepping fractures, one of which showed 1.5 mm of left-lateral strike slip, lie on or close tp previously mapped strands of the Las Positas fault zone. The evidence at these two localities indicates that tectonic surface displacement occurred along at least 1.1 km of the Las Positas fault zone.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr80523","collaboration":"In cooperation with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission","usgsCitation":"Bonilla, M.G., Lienkaemper, J.J., and Tinsley, J.C., 1980, Surface faulting near Livermore, California, associated with the January 1980 earthquakes: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-523, Report: 32 p.; Plate 1: 15.18 x 32.76 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80523.","productDescription":"Report: 32 p.; Plate 1: 15.18 x 32.76 inches","onlineOnly":"Y","temporalStart":"1980-01-24","temporalEnd":"1980-01-26","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":420923,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_11678.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":115841,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0523/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":254662,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_80_523.gif"}],"scale":"24000","datum":"Mean Sea Level","country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Livermore","otherGeospatial":"Las Positas Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -121.75,\n 37.75\n ],\n [\n -121.75,\n 37.65\n ],\n [\n -121.657,\n 37.65\n ],\n [\n -121.657,\n 37.75\n ],\n [\n -121.75,\n 37.75\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db6982a3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bonilla, Manuel G.","contributorId":74384,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bonilla","given":"Manuel","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188410,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lienkaemper, James J. 0000-0002-7578-7042 jlienk@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7578-7042","contributorId":1941,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lienkaemper","given":"James","email":"jlienk@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":188408,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Tinsley, J.
