A digital model calibrated to conditions in Little Laughery Creek tributary and Little Laughery Creek was used to predict alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows.</p><p>Natural streamflow during the summer and annual 7-day, 10-year low flow is zero. Headwater flow upstream from the wastewater-treatment facilities consists solely of process cooling water from an industrial discharger. This flow is usually Less than 0.5 cubic foot per second. Consequently, benefits from dilution are minimal. As a result, current and projected ammonia-nitrogen concentrations from the municipal discharges will result in in-stream ammonia-nitrogen concentrations that exceed the Indiana ammonia-nitrogen toxicity standards (maximum stream ammonia-nitrogen concentrations of 2.5 and 4.0 milligrams per liter during summer and winter low flows, respectively).</p><p>This waste-Load assimilation study is not based on a verified model. The changes in stream water quality predicted by the model represent only possible stream responses to differing effluent conditions.</p><p><br>Benthic-oxygen demand is probably the most significant factor affecting Little Laughery Creek and is probably responsible for the in-stream dis-solved-oxygen concentration being less than the Indiana stream dissolved-oxygen standard (5.0 milligrams per liter) during two water-quality surveys. Precipitation in the mountainous upper part of the watershed is the primary source of flow in the Mojave River. Total precipitation at Lake Arrowhead, representative of the mountainous area, was 98 inches in the 1969 water year and 93 inches in the 1978 water year. Of these totals, 94 inches in 1969 and 88 inches in 1978 fell during the rainy season, December through April. The resulting flood period in 1969 produced an instantaneous peak discharge of 18,000 cubic feet per second at Afton, about 100 miles downstream from Lake Arrowhead. This discharge had an approximate flood-recurrence interval of 30 years. An instantaneous peak of 24,800 cubic feet per second was measured during the 1978 floods at Deep Creek. This discharge had an approximate flood-recurrence interval of 20 years.</p><p>A comparison of the hydrologic data for the 1969 and 1978 flood periods indicates that although more precipitation occurred in 1969, more recharge occurred in 1978. The factors that caused the greater recharge were: (1) The more evenly distributed precipitation from December 1977 to April 1978, allowing for more uniform surface-water runoff in the Mojave River; (2) the dams constructed in the upper basin after 1969, which regulated floodflow peaks and allowed more water to stay in the basin; and (3) the lower water level in the aquifer in 1978, which made more space available to store the recharge water.</p><p>Total recharge resulting from the floods is estimated to have been 245,000 acre-feet in the 1969 water year and 282,000 acre-feet in 1978. At present (1979) costs of water from Silverwood Lake, the 1969 recharge would be worth about $4.6 million and the 1978 recharge about $5.2 million. A much smaller basin, into which Aialik Glacier discharges icebergs, is located west of two islands and a submarine ridge. Comparison of 1978 soundings with U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (now National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) data obtained in 1912 shows shoaling of about 64 feet in the deepest part of the small basin nearest the glacier and of about 40 feet in the large basin. The time of retreat of Aialik Glacier from the moraine bar is unknown; a faint ' trimline ' is still visible in the forest on the east side of the fiord, and a carbon-14 date suggests the retreat could have taken place as recently as 1800. The time of Aialik Glcier 's neoglacial advance to the moraine is unknown. Pederson Glacier, which terminates in part in a tidal lagoon or lake, has retreated about 0.90 mile from a moraine judged by Grant and Higgins to have been in contact with the ice about 1896. This slide occurred in early 1975, some 20 years after cessation of mining. Geothermal gradients commonly decreased with depth, probably as a result of compaction and higher quartz content of the deeper sedimentary deposits. There is no evidence for hydrothermal discharge. A maximum temperature of 31.7 degrees Celsius was measured at a depth of 869 meters. Estimated temperatures at a depth of 1 kilometer at the drill sites ranged from about 34 to 63 degrees Celsius. Temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Celsius probably would not occur at depths less than 1,500 meters. Values of thermal conductivity needed to maintain an assumed regional heat flow of about 2.1 heat flow units along the measured geothermal gradients generally exceeded published values for the rock and soil penetrated by the wells. Laboratory determinations of the thermal conductivity of cores and cuttings would be useful to refine the estimates and to test the conclusion that the measured temperatures are not hotter than normal. This report presents findings of sediment transport, streamflow characteristics, and stream-channel morphology from the first year of the study and documents historical erosion. The study is being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the city of Middleton and the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. Pheasant Branch, a tributary to Lake Mendota, drains 23.1 square miles of glacial drift. Channel erosion is severe within Middleton, requiring extensive use of erosion-control structures. Occasionally, channel dredging near the mouth and into Lake Mendota is required for boating. Comparison of stream-channel surveys of 1971 and 1977 shows the lowest part of the channel lowered 3 to 4 feet at some sites in the urban reach from U.S. Highway 12 downstream to Century Avenue. Downstream from Century Avenue, channel width increased from about 35 to 48 feet and channel cross-section area increased about 86 percent. A survey of Pheasant Branch in 1971 provided data for quantification of stream-channel changes since that time. Six erosion-control structures previously installed appear to have had some benefit in controlling head cutting in the channel.
