Specific conductance reached 2,100 micromhos and total residue concentrations reached 2,770 milligrams per liter. The chemical oxygen demand concentration in 95% of the samples exceeded 50 milligrams per liter, a concentration that may be sufficient to cause severe oxygen depletion in areas of the receiving water, Mission Bay. Lead concentrations in all samples exceeded concentrations thought to affect some aquatic organisms. Median total nitrogen and total orthophosphorus concentrations were far in excess of concentrations known to cause nuisance growth of algae in lakes. Fecal coliform bacteria concentrations greatly exceeded recommended levels for primary contact recreation water. Concentrations of pesticides--heptachlor, malathion, chlordane, DDT, diazinon, and dieldrin--frequently exceeded the recommended maximums for marine or freshwater aquatic systems. Total loads of selected constituents are calculated and may be used to estimate the impact of runoff on the receiving water. The association and sequence of these rocks is invariant whereas the metric relations and configurations of the properties of these rocks are unlimited in variety. This characterization satisfies the doctrines of topology. Metric relations are statistical, and their modes are among the better guides to optimal areas for exploration. Metric configurations are graphically irregular and unpredictable mathematical surfaces like mountain topography. Each mineral edifice must be mapped to locate its mineral deposits. All measurements and observations are only positive or neutral for the occurrence of a mineral deposit. Effective prospecting is based on an increasing density of positive data with proximity to the mineral deposit. The most significant seasonal water-level declines observed in 1979 were in supply well 22 (36.35 feet) and test well T-7 (15.98 feet). Drill cuttings, water samples, and water-level measurements were collected. Geologist's, driller's, and geophysical logs were completed. The well is constructed with 12-inch diameter casing to a depth of 515 feet and 6-inch diameter casing from 515 to 2,000 feet. The remainder is open hole. The uppermost 500 feet of material penetrated by the well consists of sand, clay, limestone, and dolomite. In the remainder of the hole, the material consists of fragmental and granular limestone and massive to finely crystalline dolomite, which comprise the Floridan aquifer in the area. After the well was completed, water levels in the monitored zone, 2,000 to 2,102 feet, were above land surface. During July and August 1979, water levels ranged from about 8 to 13 feet above land surface. Chloride concentrations of water sampled through the drill stem from a depth of 632 to 2,039 feet ranged from 25 to 710 milligrams per liter. Chloride increased markedly below 2,039 feet to a maximum of 7,800 milligrams per liter at 2,094 feet. The current rate of ground-water pumping in Spokane Valley has little effect on water levels in the Spokane aquifer, although short-term water-level declines occur locally. The model was used to show the effects of increased ground-water pumpage on aquifer heads and streamflow. A simulated pumping rate twice that of actual 1977 pumping rates of 227 cubic feet per second lowered water levels in the Spokane aquifer less than 3 feet during a 1-year simulation period. This doubling of the ground water pumpage caused a decrease in discharge of the Spokane River, as measured at Spokane, of about 150 cubic feet per second during the summer months and about 50 cubic feet per second during the rest of the year. Potentiometric levels decreased 5 to 36 feet between September 1979 and May 1980, in the citrus and farming sections of southern Hillsborough, southwestern Polk, northwestern DeSoto , Hardee, and Manatee Counties. Water levels in these areas are widely affected by pumping for irrigation and have the greatest range in fluctuations. Water-level decreases ranged from 0 to 8 feet in coastal, northern, and southern areas of the Water Management District. Generally, potentiometric levels were lower than previous May levels except in the northernmost and southernmost counties where water levels were 1 to 5 feet higher. Surface-water runoff is derived from direct precipitation on the area and from intermittent spring flow. Groundwater occurs in the alluvial deposits and in the consolidated rocks where they are highly fractured or deeply weathered. The best potential for groundwater development on the reservation is in the small alluvial basins in the San Ysidro and San Ignacio areas. Most water on the reservation is good to excellent in chemical quality for domestic, stock, and irrigation use. Water from two wells (and one spring), however, exceeds the primary drinking-water standard for nitrate plus nitrate. Permanent regulations \nestablished for this Act by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) require the \nissuance of a permit before mining begins. An application for a mining permit \nmust include an assessment of the hydrologic characteristics of the mining \nsite and adjacent area, and a projection of the potential impacts of \nmining activities on surface water and ground water.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>OSM's permanent regulations and guidelines provide little insight on the \n\"how to\" aspect of making the required hydrologic assessment. This investigation\nwas completed to improve the understanding of the kinds of information \nneeded to make such assessments by: (a) reviewing the regulations to determine \nwhat hydrologic information is required; (b) preparing an example hydrologic \nassessment based on the regulations; and (c) using the experience \ngained in (a) and (b) to identify areas lacking or needing additional data to \nmake the required assessment.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Hydrologic data for the study area were obtained from published and unpublished \nreports, maps, aerial photographs, personal interviews with residents \nin the area of the hypothetical mine site, and discussions with experts in \nthe field. Where data were unavailable, \"synthetic\" data were generated by \nextrapolation from proximate or similar watersheds and (or) by assumptions \nbased on experience or theory. In the outcrop area of the Winona-Tallahatta aquifer the potentiometric surface is strongly affected by recharge from precipitation, by topography, and by drainage of the aquifer by streams. A spill of 5,000 gallons of chloroform in 1970, 120 feet from the well, is probably the source of the contamination. The chloroform is adsorbed in the unsaturated zone in the alluvium; the greatest concentrations are presently at and slightly above the water table. Lesser amounts of carbon tetrachloride are found with the chloroform. Its source is unknown.</p><p>The two contaminants were above the water table in the alluvium until a long-term trend of rising ground-water levels caused water to reach the contaminants and the water-chloroform mixture began moving downgradient to the well. High river stages cause a seasonal cycle of water-level rise, generally in late spring and midsummer; the ground water comes in contact with more chloroform and the chloroform concentration of the well water increases. It includes about 1,300 square miles (3,370 square kilometers) in the upper Virgin River basin and about 650 square miles (1,680 square kilometers) in the upper Kanab Creek basin. The area is sparsely populated with Kanab (population about 1,400 in 1975) being the largest community. Although the area is largely agricultural, it is known to contain large coal reserves with potential for development.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
