Water-quality monitoring stations existing before 1988 were at or near the mouths of tributaries flowing into Lake Mead on the Colorado River below multiple sources of dissolved solids. Thus, data were insufficient to assess what percentage of the overall dissolved-solids contribution to the Colorado River comes from public lands. To assess that contribution in southeastern Nevada, four streamflow and water-quality stations were established, one each on Pahranagat Wash, Muddy River, Meadow Valley Wash, and Las Vegas Wash. Streamflow data and specific-conductance data (an indirect, approximate measure of dissolved-solids concentration) were recorded half-hourly at Pahranagat Wash and Las Vegas Wash, and hourly at Muddy River and Meadow Valley Wash. In addition, water samples were collected during station visits and analyzed for instantaneous specific conductance and dissolved-solids concentration. Additional water samples were collected during selected periods of storm runoff. Data collected at the four sites from October 1988 through September 1991 are presented in tabular format in this report. Water withdrawals reported during the registration process total 0.06 Mgal/d (0.01 Mgal/d groundwater and 0.05 Mgal/d surface water) for agriculture and 97.82 Mgal/d (94.16 Mgal/d groundwater and 3.66 Mgal/d surface water) for irrigation. Data were collected in three canals in Hyde County, three canals in Beaufort County, and in Campbell Creek, which receives drainage directly from two of the Beaufort County canals. Water-control structures were placed on two of the six canals near the beginning of the investigation. Following about 2 years of data collection, control structures were placed on the remaining four canals. Hydrologic and water-quality data are presented for each of the study sites for the period of October 1990 through May 1992. Data presented in this report cover the second phase of the investigation after the installation of water-control structures in the six drainage canals. Following a description of the study sites and data-collection methods, data are presented for five of the drainage canals and Campbell Creek. Data collection was discontinued at one of the Beaufort County sites after the first phase of the investigation. Quaternary basalt of the Snake River Group underlies most of the 10,800 square mile eastern plain and constitutes the most productive aquifers. Transmissivity of the upper 200 feet of the basalt aquifer commonly ranges from 100,000 to 1,000,000 square feet per day. Vertical hydraulic conductivity is several orders of magnitude lower than horizontal hydraulic conductivity and is related to the degree of jointing. Alluvial sand and gravel in the Boise River valley constitutes the most productive aquifers in the 4,800 square mile western plain. Along much of its length, the Snake River gains groundwater. Between Milner and King Hill, the river gained 4.7 million acre-ft in 1980, most as spring flow from the north side. The chemical composition of groundwater in the plain is essentially the same as that in streams and groundwater from tributary drainage basins. The use of surface water for irrigation for 100 years has caused major changes in the hydrologic system on the plain. During that time, recharge on the main part of the eastern plain increased about 70 percent, discharge about 80 percent.
