Long before John Smith reached the falls in 1609, groups of Indians from East and West met at this great river barrier to trade and perform ceremonies in honor of the spirit of the \"Roaring Waters\". As early as 1754, George Washington visualized the Potomac River as an important avenue of trade and communication with the interior.
\n
Records show that with the exception of Mount Vernon, Great Falls was perhaps as intimately associated with George Washington's everyday life as any other place in the country. As first President of the \"Patowmack Canal Company,\" Washington frequently visited the working parties as they constructed the canal and lock system which skirted the treacherous falls on the Virginia side. Matildaville, a town of about 40 acres named after the wife of \"Light Horse\" Harry Lee and consisting of various dwellings, grist mill, market house, forge, sawmill, and tavern, sprang up along the banks of the canal.
\n
In 1802, the Patowmack Company canals were essentially completed, and hundreds of boats plied the river, bringing corn and wheat, coal and limestone, flaxseed and furs downstream from the mountainous region of Cumberland. Many of the boats were sold for lumber in Georgetown, thus sparing the boatmen an arduous upstream journey.
\n
After the establishment of the Nation's Capital, Great Falls became a popular scenic attraction for residents and visitors alike. But Great Falls was not always so easily accessible as it is today. In 1845, a newspaper columnist, after praising the beauty and historic interest of the region, added, \"... the access to this interesting spot is, on both sides of the river, by the most infamous of roads and the accommodations for visitors anything but what they ought to be!\"
\n
Visitors to Great Falls now number close to a half million annually and, because of this continuing and mounting interest, the U.S. Geological Survey has joined with the National Park Service in preparing this booklet for better understanding and enjoyment of the Great Falls of the Potomac River.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, DC","doi":"10.3133/b1471","usgsCitation":"Reed, J.C., Sigafoos, R.S., and Fisher, G.W., 1980, The river and the rocks: The geologic story of Great Falls and the Potomac River Gorge: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1471, vii, 75 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/b1471.","productDescription":"vii, 75 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":93419,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1471/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":166842,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1471/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":404586,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_21566.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland, Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Great Falls of the Potomac River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.25903511047363,\n              38.97515797038955\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.25903511047363,\n              39.01238150496681\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.22496032714844,\n              39.01238150496681\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.22496032714844,\n              38.97515797038955\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.25903511047363,\n              38.97515797038955\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67ac86","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reed, John Calvin Jr.","contributorId":8460,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reed","given":"John","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","middleInitial":"Calvin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":214923,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sigafoos, Robert Sumner","contributorId":96328,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sigafoos","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"Sumner","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":214925,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Fisher, George Wescott","contributorId":51356,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fisher","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"Wescott","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":214924,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The last known eruption occurred about 200 radiocarbon years ago. Eruptions during the last 10,000 years produced lava flows and domes on and around the flanks of Mount Shasta, and pyroclastic flows from summit and flank vents extended as far as 20 kilometers from the summit. Most of these eruptions also produced large mudflows, many of which reached more than several tens of kilometers from Mount Shasta. Future eruptions like those of the past could endanger the communities of Weed, Mount Shasta, McCloud, and Dunsmuir, located at or near the base of Mount Shasta. Such eruptions will most likely produce deposits of lithic ash, lava flows, domes, and pyroclastic flows. Lava flows and pyroclastic flows may affect low-and flat-lying ground almost anywhere within about 20 kilometers of the summit of Mount Shasta, and mudflows may cover valley floors and other low areas as much as several tens of kilometers from the volcano. On the basis of its past behavior, Mount Shasta is not likely to erupt large volumes of pumiceous ash in the future; areas subject to the greatest risk from air-fall tephra are located mainly east and within about 50 kilometers of the summit of the volcano. The degree of risk from air-fall tephra decreases progressively as the distance from the volcano increases.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/b1503","usgsCitation":"Miller, C.D., 1980, Potential hazards from future eruptions in the vicinity of Mount Shasta Volcano, Northern California: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1503, Report: vii, 43 p.; 3 Plates: 35.50 x 40.0 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/b1503.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 43 p.; 3 Plates: 35.50 x 40.0 inches or smaller","numberOfPages":"54","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":157,"text":"Cascades Volcano Observatory","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":295349,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/b1503.jpg"},{"id":63103,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1503/pdf/b1503_plate1.pdf","text":"Plate 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":280569,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1503/"},{"id":63104,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1503/pdf/b1503_plate2.pdf","text":"Plate 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":63105,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1503/pdf/b1503_plate3.pdf","text":"Plate 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":63106,"rank":302,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1503/pdf/b1503_report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Mount Shasta","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -122.499586,41.097215 ], [ -122.499586,41.608364 ], [ -121.749498,41.608364 ], [ -121.749498,41.097215 ], [ -122.499586,41.097215 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e77c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, C. The words alone create a sense of space and a feeling of destiny a challenge. But what exactly is this special part of Western America that contains so much of our history? How did it come to be? Why is it different?
\n
Geographically, the Great Plains is an immense sweep of country; it reaches from Mexico far north into Canada and spreads out east of the Rocky Mountains like a huge welcome mat. So often maligned as a drab, featureless area, the Great Plains is in fact a land of marked contrasts and limitless variety: canyons carved into solid rock of an arid land by the waters of the Pecos and the Rio Grande; the seemingly endless grainfields of Kansas; the desolation of the Badlands; the beauty of the Black Hills.
\n
Before it was broken by the plow, most of the Great Plains from the Texas panhandle northward was treeless grassland. Trees grew only along the floodplains of streams and on the few mountain masses of the northern Great Plains. These lush prairies once were the grazing ground for immense herds of bison, and the land provided a bountiful life for those Indians who followed the herds. South of the grasslands, in Texas, shrubs mixed with the grasses: creosote bush along the valley of the Pecos River; mesquite, oak, and juniper to the east.
\n
The general lack of trees suggests that this is a land of little moisture, as indeed it is. Nearly all of the Great Plains receives less than 24 inches of rainfall a year, and most of it receives less than 16 inches. This dryness and the strength of sunshine in this area, which lies mostly between 2,000 and 6,000 feet above sea level, create the semiarid environment that typifies the Great Plains. But it was not always so. When the last continental glacier stood near its maximum extent, some 12,000-14,000 years ago, spruce forest reached southward as far as Kansas, and the Great Plains farther south was covered by deciduous forest. The trees retreated northward as the ice front receded, and the Great Plains has been a treeless grassland for the last 8,000-10,000 years.
\n
For more than half a century after Lewis and Clark crossed the country in 1805-6, the Great Plains was the testing ground of frontier America here America grew to maturity (fig. 1). In 1805-7, explorer Zebulon Pike crossed the southcentral Great Plains, following the Arkansas River from near Great Bend, Kans., to the Rocky Mountains. In later years, Santa Fe traders, lured by the wealth of New Mexican trade, followed Pike's path as far as Bents Fort, Colo., where they turned southwestward away from the river route. Those pioneers who later crossed the plains on the Oregon Trail reached the Platte River near the place that would become Kearney, Nebr., by a nearly direct route from Independence, Mo., and followed the Platte across the central part of the Great Plains.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/b1493","usgsCitation":"Trimble, D.E., 1980, The geologic story of the Great Plains (Reprinted 1990): U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1493, 55 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/b1493.","productDescription":"55 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":12461,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.nps.gov/parkhistory/online_books/geology/publications/bul/1493/index.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":166454,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1493/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":93752,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1493/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"edition":"Reprinted 1990","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c5e2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Trimble, Donald E.","contributorId":75910,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Trimble","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":215714,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Statistical summaries of probable diversions from the South Platte River based on a 27-year period of historical flows indicate that an average-annual diversion of 96,000 acre-feet and a median-annual diversion of 43,000 acre-feet would be available. Diversions would sustain water in ponds for waterfowl habitat for an average of about five months per year, with a miximum pond surface area of about 300 acres with the median diversions and a maximum pond surface area of about 1,250 acres at least one-half of the years with the historic diversions. If the annual diversion were 43,000 acre-feet, recharge to the two alluvial aquifers would raise water levels sufficiently to create flowing streams in the channels of Beaver and Badger Creeks while allowing an increase in current ground-water pumping. The only area of significant waterlogging would be along the proposed delivery canal on the west edge of Badger Creek valley. If the total water available were diverted, the aquifer system could not transmit the water fast enough to the irrigation areas to avoid considerable waterlogging in the recharge areas. The impact of the proposed project on the South Platte River basin would be minimal once the ground-water system attained steady-state conditions, but that may take decades with a uniform diversion of the 43,000 acre-feet annually.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8046","usgsCitation":"Burns, A.W., 1980, Hydrologic analysis of the proposed Badger-Beaver Creeks artificial-recharge project: Morgan County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-46, vi, 88 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8046.","productDescription":"vi, 88 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":394283,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35413.htm"},{"id":55210,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0046/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":119127,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0046/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Morgan County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -103.933,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.5,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.5,\n              40.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.933,\n              40.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.933,\n              40\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db611906","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burns, Alan W.","contributorId":41419,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burns","given":"Alan","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196349,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
