The U.S. Geological Survey obtained these data for the Soil Conservation Service in a water-quality survey of the watershed from March to August 1979. Past and present surface coal mining is the factor having the greatest impact on water quality in the watershed. The upper reaches of Cypress Creek receive acid-mine drainage from a coal-mine waste slurry during periods of intense rainfall. All the remaining tributaries, except Summer Pecka ditch, drain mined or reclaimed lands. The general water type of Cypress Creek and most of its tributaries is calcium and magnesium sulfate. In contrast, the water type at background site 21 on Summer Pecka ditch is calcium sulfate. Specific conductance ranged from 470 to 4,730 micromhos per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius, and pH ranged from 1.2 to 8.8. Specific conductance, hardness, and concentrations of major ions and dissolved solids were highest in tributaries affected by mining. The pH was lowest in the same tributaries. Concentrations of iron, manganese, and sulfate in water samples and chlordane, DDT, and PCB 's in streambed samples exceeded water-quality limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Nitrate data for water samples collected during 1952-76 show that: (1) median nitrate concentration of water in the sewered part of the entire thickness of the upper glacial aquifer is not significantly different (at the 0.95 confidence limit, N = 1400) from that in the unsewered area, (2) median nitrate concentrations in the upper 3 meters of the upper glacial aquifer are significantly lower (at the 0.90 confidence limit, N = 15) in the sewered area than in the unsewered area, (3) in the sewered area, water from 8 of 10 wells in the upper glacial aquifer shows significantly decreasing nitrate concentration with time, (4) total nitrogen concentrations in streams draining the sewered area are significantly lower than in those draining the unsewered area, (5) from more than 2,000 nitrate analyses of water in the Magothy aquifer collected from 1952-76, it was found that nitrate is present at all depths but that nitrate concentrations decrease with depth, and (6) although water from most Magothy wells having long-term nitrate records shows no significant change in nitrate concentration with time, where the change is significant, nitrate is increasing. Geologic and hydrologic data were combined with water-quality data to develop an understanding of factors affecting present and future groundwater quality. Samples were analyzed for 16 major chemical constituents, selected metallic trace elements, pH, specific conductance, water temperature, and total- and fecal-coliform bacteria. Locally, concentrations of dissolved solids, nitrite plus nitrate, iron, and cadmium exceeded mandatory or recommended limits established for public water supplies. Hardness exceeding 300 milligrams per liter may restrict groundwater use esthetically or economically. The shallow flow systems are the source of base flow to all streams on the island. The ground-water-contributing areas of southwest Suffolk County 's 21 streams are delineated on a map. The drainage-divide locations were derived from a 1975 water-table map on the assumption that flow in the shallow flow systems is two dimensional (horizontal). This assumption is valid for the southern part of the area (adjacent to flowing streams), but, because the direction of flow in the northern part, near the regional ground-water divide, is mainly downward, the delineations for the northern part are only inferred. Regression analysis shows correlation for discharge with dissolved sodium, dissolved chloride, and dissolved potassium, and for specific conductance with dissolved chloride and dissolved sulfate at the station downstream from Wilsons Creek. This is due to the consistent quality of the effluent from the Southwest Wastewater Plant on Wilsons Creek. Water-quality monitor stations upstream and downstream from the wastewater plant indicate that the plant has a degrading effect on dissolved oxygen in Wilsons Creek and James River. The monitors also indicate that rainfall flushes momentarily poor quality water into Wilsons Creek from the urbanized Springfield area. Overall, the runoff is diluting the effluent from the wastewater plant. Rainfall and runoff stations indicate a rapid response of runoff to rainfall due to the high percentage of imperviousness and the filling or paving of sinkholes. Results of two dye traces indicate that Grove Creek probably is not an effective boundary. Therefore, higher water levels near the reservoir may cause more ground water to move into the mining belt and cause a greater discharge of zinc-laden mine water into Center Creek.</p><p>Ground-water-level measurements and seepage runs on Center Creek indicate a relationship between ground-water levels, mine-water discharge and seepage, and base flow in Center Creek. The procedures are applicable to flood flows that are not significantly affected by artificial storage or other manmade activities. For 115 gaged sites within the State, the estimates are from the frequency curves defined from the gaging records. Flood-frequency estimates are made for ungaged sites by using regression relations that require evaluation of the size, main channel slope, and a soil-infiltration index for the drainage basin. Regression relations are considered applicable for estimating flood peaks at sites on basins draining 0.05 to 100 square miles and for estimating flood volumes at sites on basins draining from 0.05 to 15 square miles.</p><p>Limitations on use of the regression relations and the reliability of regression estimates are discussed. A method is indicated for using the estimating procedure and embankment ponding to design smaller highway culverts.</p><p>The procedures were developed from analysis of flood records of 123 gaged sites in South Dakota and adjacent States. For 66 sites, short-term records were extended on the basis of long-term climatic records and a rainfall-runoff model. Linear least-squares regression analyses were used with logarithmic transformation of variables to relate flood magnitudes as dependent variables to indexes describing the drainage basins as independent variables. A dimensionless hydrograph shape was found appropriate for rainfall-runoff hydrographs in South Dakota.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological In the outcrop area of the Winona-Tallahatta aquifer the potentiometric surface is strongly affected by recharge from precipitation, by topography, and by drainage of the aquifer by streams.
