Irrigation and return-flow data show pastures are sources of fecal coliform and fecal streptococci bacteria and sinks for suspended sediment and nitrite-plus-nitrate nitrogen. Bear Creek and its tributaries have dissolved oxygen and pH values that do not meet State standards. Forty to 50% of the fecal coliform and fecal streptococci concentrations were higher than 1,000 bacteria colonies per 100 milliliters during the irrigation season in the lower two-thirds of the basin. During the irrigation season, suspended-sediment concentrations, average 35 milligrams per liter, were double those for the nonirrigation season. The Ashland sewage-treatment plant is a major source of nitrite plus nitrate, ammonia, and Kjeldahl nitrogen, and orthophosphate in Bear Creek. The range, circular in form, is covered by a thin sequence of late-cenozoic volcanics which overlie highly fractured crystalline basement, similar in composition to the nearby Sierra Nevada (Duffield et al., 1980). Thirty-eight rhyolite domes of Pleistocene age were emplaced near the center of the range and are aligned approximately parallel to the direction of Basin and Range faulting (Figure 1). Bacon et al. (1980), using both age-dates and chemical analyses, inferred that the domes originated from a magma source beneath the central and largest of the rhyolite domes, Sugarloaf Mountain (Figure 1). A shallow source was inferred because active fumeroles, hydrothermally altered zones, and high heat flow values (Combs, 1980) are presently observed in this vicinity.<br></div><div><span><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"></span></div><div><span>In an effort to collect seismic data which could be used to identify a magma body beneath Sugarloaf Mountain, a 16 station seismograph array was operated in the Coso Range from September 1975 through September 1977. During the two years of network operation, over 4000 local earthquakes were located in the vicinity of the Coso Range (Walter and Weaver, 1980a, 1980b). The lake supplies an average of 300,000 cubic meters per day of water to metropolitan San Juan. Flows from Rio Grande de Loize and Rio Gurabo contribute 84.0 percent of the water, 67.3 percent of the nitrogen, and 66.8 percent of the phosphorus to the lake. About 31 percent of the nitrogen and 45 percent of the phosphorus were retained in the lake, which has a mean flusing rate of 19 times per year. The lake 's capacity declines at a rate of about 1.9 percent per year and is about 14.9 million cubic meters. Sewage inputs to the lake 's tributaries average 18,560 cubic meters per day. Fecal coliform bacteria in numbers ranging from 100 to 6,700,000 were recorded throughout the tributaries and the lake. In the lake, dissolved oxygen concentration is less than 5.0 milligrams per liter below the 1.5-meter depth. Lago Loize is a hypereutrophic lake, with an average total nitrogen concentration of 1.7 milligrams per liter and 0.33 milligram per liter of total phosphorus. This conclusion is supported by iron and manganese concentrations in soils and carbon and oxygen isotope ratios in rock samples. Seeping hydrocarbons provided reducing conditions sufficient to enable divalent iron and manganese to be organically complexed or adsorbed on solids in the soils. These bound or adsorped elements in the divalent state are essential to plants, and the plants readily assimilate them. A prominent reflector found at 27 m below the mudline (water depths 7-9 m) has a negative reflection coefficient greater than 0.5. The large acoustic impedance contrast, coupled with a report of gas encountered at a corresponding depth in a nearby drillhole, shows that the reflector is the upper boundary of a zone containing gas. The gas exists in sandy gravel capped by stiff, silty clay. Analysis of unprocessed conventional high-resolution records from the region indicates that the gas-bearing layer may extend over an area of at least 50 km at depths of 19-35 m below the mudline. Similar-appearing reflectors, previously unexplained, occur in patches over wide regions of the shelf where offshore oil development is beginning at a rapid pace. A description of model calibration and verification is presented for: (1) A 40.8 acre single-family residential area, (2) a 58.3-acre highway area, (3) a 20.4-acre commercial area, and (4) a 14.7-acre multifamily residential area. Rainfall-runoff data for 80, 108, 114, and 52 storms at sites, 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, were collected, analyzed, and stored on direct-access files. Rainfall and runoff data for these storms (at 1-minute time intervals) were used in flow-modeling simulation analyses. A distributed routing Geological Survey rainfall-runoff model was used to determine rainfall excess and route overland and channel flows at each site. Optimization of soil-moisture- accounting and infiltration parameters was performed during the calibration phases. The results of this study showed that, with qualifications, an acceptable verification of the Geological Survey model can be achieved. Samples were collected monthly and during periods of storm runoff from December 1976 through July 1978. Concentrations of chemical constituents relevant to agricultural practices were found to be low, even during periods of storm runoff. Concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus ranged from 0.30 to 1.60 and 0.01 to 0.42 milligrams per liter, respectively. Copper, arsenic, lead, mercury, and zinc concentrations were low and did not exceed Georgia Department of Natural Resources (1977) or U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1977) standards for safe drinking water. Concentrations of suspended sediment and total nitrogen were found to remain relatively constant over a wide range of water discharge. Concentrations of total phosphorus showed a better relation to water discharge at Little River near Lenox than at Spring Creek near Iron City. Dissolved—solids concentrations in both streams generally decreased with an increase in water discharge. Average annual yields of selected constituents were low. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus yields were 0.60 to 0.63 and 0.04 to 0.06 tons per year per square mile in Little River and Spring Creek basins. Atrazine, butylate, and ethroprop pesticides were detected in concentrations up to 0.91 micrograms per liter in storm— runoff samples collected during the active farming Precipitation in the mountainous upper part of the watershed is the primary source of flow in the Mojave River. Total precipitation at Lake Arrowhead, representative of the mountainous area, was 98 inches in the 1969 water year and 93 inches in the 1978 water year. Of these totals, 94 inches in 1969 and 88 inches in 1978 fell during the rainy season, December through April. The resulting flood period in 1969 produced an instantaneous peak discharge of 18,000 cubic feet per second at Afton, about 100 miles downstream from Lake Arrowhead. This discharge had an approximate flood-recurrence interval of 30 years. An instantaneous peak of 24,800 cubic feet per second was measured during the 1978 floods at Deep Creek. This discharge had an approximate flood-recurrence interval of 20 years.</p><p>A comparison of the hydrologic data for the 1969 and 1978 flood periods indicates that although more precipitation occurred in 1969, more recharge occurred in 1978. The factors that caused the greater recharge were: (1) The more evenly distributed precipitation from December 1977 to April 1978, allowing for more uniform surface-water runoff in the Mojave River; (2) the dams constructed in the upper basin after 1969, which regulated floodflow peaks and allowed more water to stay in the basin; and (3) the lower water level in the aquifer in 1978, which made more space available to store the recharge water.</p><p>Total recharge resulting from the floods is estimated to have been 245,000 acre-feet in the 1969 water year and 282,000 acre-feet in 1978. At present (1979) costs of water from Silverwood Lake, the 1969 recharge would be worth about $4.6 million and the 1978 recharge about $5.2 million. A digital model calibrated to conditions in Duck Creek was used to develop alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows. The major point-source waste load affecting Duck Creek is the Elwood wastewater-treatment facility. Natural streamflow during the low flow is zero, so no benefit from dilution is provided. Natural reaeration at the low-flow condition (approximately 3 cubic feet per second), also low, is estimated to be less than 1 per day (base e at 20 Celsius). Consequently, the wasteload assimilative capacity of the stream is low. Effluent ammonia-nitrogen concentrations, projected by the Indiana State Board of Health, will result in stream ammonia-nitrogen concentrations that exceed the State ammonia-nitrogen toxicity standards (2.5 milligrams per liter from April to October and 4.0 milligrams per liter from November through March). The projected effluent ammonia-nitrogen load will also result in the present Indiana stream dissolved-oxygen standard (5.0 milligrams per liter) not being met. Benthic-oxygen demand may also affect stream water quality. During the summer low-flow, a benthic-oxygen demand of only 0.6 gram per square meter per day would utilize all the streams 's available assimilative capacity.
