Nitrogen: chlorophyll <i>a</i> rations in plankton","docAbstract":"<p><span>Particulate nitrogen (PN) and chlorophyll&nbsp;</span><i>a</i><span>&nbsp;(Chl</span><i>a</i><span>) were measured in the northern reach of San Francisco Bay throughout 1980. The PN values were calculated as the differences between unfiltered and filtered (0&middot;4 &mu;m) samples analyzed using the UV-catalyzed peroxide digestion method. The Chl</span><i>a</i><span>&nbsp;values were measured spectrophotometrically, with corrections made for phaeopigments. The plot of all PNChla data was found to be non-linear, and the concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) was found to be the best selector for linear subsets of the data. The best-fit slopes of PNChla plots, as determined by linear regression (model II), were interpreted to be the N: Chl</span><i>a</i><span>&nbsp;ratios of phytoplankton. The&nbsp;</span><i>Y</i><span>-intercepts of the regression lines were considered to represent easily-oxidizable detrital nitrogen (EDN). In clear water ( &lt; 10 mg l</span><sup><span>&minus;1</span></sup><span>&nbsp;SPM), the N: Chl</span><i>a</i><span>&nbsp;ratio was 1&middot;07 &mu;g-at N per &mu;g Chl</span><i>a</i><span>. It decreased to 0&middot;60 in the 10&ndash;18 mg l</span><sup><span>&minus;1</span></sup><span>&nbsp;range and averaged 0&middot;31 in the remaining four ranges (18&ndash;35, 35&ndash;65, 65&ndash;155, and 155&ndash;470 mg l</span><sup><span>&minus;1</span></sup><span>). The EDN values were less than 1 &mu;g-at N l</span><sup><span>&minus;1</span></sup><span>&nbsp;in the clear water and increased monotonically to almost 12 &mu;g-at N l</span><sup><span>&minus;1</span></sup><span>&nbsp;in the highest SPM range. The N: Chl</span><i>a</i><span>&nbsp;ratios for the four highest SPM ranges agree well with data for phytoplankton in light-limited cultures. All isolates were distinguishable on the basis of each growth characteristic examined. The CO isolate from the Sacramento River drainage of California was the most singular of the 10 because of its diminutive plaque size and sensitivity to slightly elevated temperatures. The mean plaque diameter of the l0 isolates increased as the latitude of the geographic source of the isolate increased. Virus was found in high concentrations only in fish sampled during and after spawning. Infection rates increased from nil to 100 percent within 2 weeks. In spawning fish, incidences of IHN virus were high in all organs and fluids except brain and serum, and the highest concentrations were in the pyloric caeca and lower gut. The term 'stressor' should be used to describe environmental or other factor intensities severe enough to require a compensatory response at any level of biological organization. A stressor is normally extrinsic. The term 'stress' indicates the organismic response initiated by the stressor, also at any level of biological organization. The Wilderness Act directs that the results of these surveys are to be made available to the public and are to be submitted to the President and the Congress. This professional paper is a synopsis of the mineral surveys made from 1965 to 1983. It summarizes our current knowledge of mineral and energy resources and of the potential for the occurrence of undiscovered mineral and energy resources in 45 million acres of Federal lands, chiefly in national forests.</p>\n<p>This book, in two volumes, consists of 332 summary articles, arranged alphabetically by State, in which the mineral-resource potential of about 800 individual areas is discussed. The summaries of the mineral surveys were written during 1982-83, generally by those who made the surveys. Index maps of each state show the location of the areas studied, numerically keyed to an alphabetic list. The national distribution of the wilderness lands studied is shown on the frontispiece. Where lands were in proximity or were added to expand previously designated areas, they often are described in a single article.</p>\n<p>Each article begins with a short summary of the results of the mineral survey followed by a discussion of the character and geologic setting of the area. Mineral resources (if any) are discussed, and the potential for undiscovered mineral resources is assessed; these are keyed to the generalized geographic and geologic map of each area Areas that have geologic characteristics indicative of different degrees of potential for the occurrence of mineral resources are shown in shades of red on each map. Some articles have a section on suggestions for further study to better define the mineral-resource potential of the area A list of pertinent references (including many of the maps and reports prepared during the mineral survey) is provided at the end of each article.</p>\n<p>This introduction contains some basic concepts about mineral resources and mineral-resource potential to try to make the book more useful to those who are not familiar with the fields of earth science and mineral-resource assessments. The legislation dealing with the wilderness program is reviewed briefly, because this evolving legislation has imparted a continuing and changing influence on the mineral-resource surveys. The introduction concludes with a description of the publications of the Geological Survey that report in greater detail the results of the joint wilderness studies by the Geological Survey and the The compilation of pertinent data indicates what information is available for use in the evaluation of the ground-water resources of the 13 counties of coastal Georgia. Also included in this report is a fairly complete discussion of previous and ongoing investigations and monitoring networks, and an extensive list of references. Maps at 1:24,000 and 1:1,000,000 scales contain well locations and identifiers for all wells in the Ground Water Site Inventory (GWSI) data base of the National Water Data Storage and retrieval System (WATSTORE). Tabular summaries of selected site information from GWSI, including well identifiers and names, latitude-longitude location, depth of well, altitude of land surface, and use of water are presented. Water-use data from the National Water Use Data System, and water use for irrigation from the University of Georgia, Department of Agriculture survey, also are tabulated. Also included are pertinent information on geophysical surveys and data obtained, and proposed project activities, particularly test-monitor well drilling. As defined for this study, the area includes the Weber River drainage from Hoytsville, just south of Coalville, to the western boundary of Morgan County at the western front of the Wasatch Range (pl. 1). The East Canyon Creek tributary drainage is included from the Weber River to the Morgan County-Summit County line. The study was made by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights. A 100% prevalence of infection was noted in the sampled population with each bird harboring two or more of the following species: Epomidiostomum crami (prevalence, 92%; mean intensity, 18.7 &plusmn; 13.3), Amidostomum anseris (prevalence, 84%; mean intensity, 9.6 &plusmn; 9.8), and Amidostomum spatulatum (prevalence, 84%; mean intensity, 11.2 &plusmn; 9.8). When large burdens (&gt;30) of both A. anseris and A. spatulatum were present in the mucosal lining of the gizzard, progressive degeneration of the epithilium and koilin linings was noted in 16% of the geese examined. Severe necrotic granulomata observed in the gizzard muscle of 36% of the geese were associated with sizable burdens (&gt;25) of E. crami which were found burrowed in the gizzard
