The Islip landfill was started in 1933, the Babylon landfill in 1947. The landfills are in contact with and discharge leachate into the highly permeable upper glacial aquifer (hydraulic conductivity 190 and 500 ft/d). The aquifer is 74 feet thick at the Babylon landfill and 170 feet thick at the Islip landfill. The leachate-enriched water occupies the boundaries retard downward migration of the plumes to deeper aquifers. The Babylon plume is 1,900 feet wide at the landfill and narrows to about 700 feet near its terminus 10,000 feet from the landfill. The Islip plume is 5,000 feet from the landfill. Hydrochemical maps and sections show the distribution of the major chemical constituents of the plumes. The most highly leachate-enriched ground water obtained was from the Babylon site; it contained 860 mg/L sodium, 110 mg/L potassium, 565 mg/L calcium, 100 mg/L magnesium, 2,7000 mg/L bicarbonate, and 1,300 mg/L chloride. Simulation of the movement and dispersion of the Babylon plume with a mathematical dispersion model indicated the coefficient of the longitudinal dispersion to be about 60 feet squared per day and the ground-water velocity to be 1 ft/d. However, the velocity determined from the hydraulic gradient and public-supply wells in the area was 4 ft/d, which would cause a plume four times as long as that predicted by the model. Impact cratering has been the dominant process. Cumulative frequencies of craters larger than 20 km for the entire quadrangle (fig. 4) are only about a factor of two below the </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">idealized lunar steady-s</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">ta</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">te curve (Moor</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">e</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">, 1964; Trask, 1966). Two of the units mapped (hilly, </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">channeled</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">, and cratered material a</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">n</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">d hilly and cratered</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\"> material) have cumulative </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">frequencies of craters larger than 40 km that are near the same as the idealized steady-state curve. The young map units (smooth plains </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">material and units of the crater </span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW37812607 BCX8\">Bakhuysen</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">) have cumul</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">ative frequencies of craters a </span><span class=\"ContextualSpellingAndGrammarError SCXW37812607 BCX8\">distributions</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\"> that are similar in form and magnitude </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37812607 BCX8\">to the average frequency distributions of lunar maria. Ages of surfaces recorded by craters larger than 5 km (fig. 4) are probably measured in several billions of years. Rainfall amounts of 4 to 15.5 inches were observed. The maximum amount of 15.5 inches occurred at Jolo, WV , in about 30 hours. This was more than twice the amount which would be expected for a 100-year recurrence-interval storm. Flood discharges along the upper Guyandotte River; Tug Fork and Levisa Fork in the Big Sandy River basin; Cumberland River; and Clinch River and Dowell River in the Tennessee River basin exceeded those previously known. Severe flooding also occurred along the Holston River and along the North Fork Kentucky River. Recurrence intervals of observed flood discharges were greater than 100-years at 29 streamflow measurement sites. Substantial reductions in peak stages and discharges on Levisa Fork, North Pound River, and Guyandotte River, attained as a result of reservoir storage, were reported by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Maximum daily suspended-sediment discharges on Guyandotte River near Baileysville, WV, and Tug Fork at Glenhayes, WV, were 54,800 tons/day and 290,000 tons/day, respectively, April 5, 1977. The aquifer is being increasingly developed for irrigation.</p>\n<p>During the drought of 1976, nearly 24,000 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for irrigation, more than double that of the previous year. The number of irrigation pumping centers more than doubled from 1975 to 1977. Nearly all water is pumped from drift aquifers, except in the eastern parts of Sherburne and Wright Counties, where Paleozoic sandstone beds are a reliable source.</p>\n<p>Physical and hydrologic properties of the surficial aquifer were determined by test augering, pumping tests, and laboratory sieve analyses. The aquifer is predominantly medium to coarse sand with lesser amounts of gravel in much of the study area. The Sauk River valley in Stearns County is nearly 50 percent poorly sorted gravel of irregular thickness. Saturated thickness of sand in the Maine Prairie area locally exceeds 100 feet, and transmissivity exceeds 40,000 feet squared per day. Similar deposits in Sherburne County exceed 80 feet in thickness, transmissivity exceeds 30,000 feet squared per day, and wells theoretically could yield 2,000 to 3,000 gallons per minute. Theoretical well yields of less than 100 gallons per minute can be expected where saturated thickness is less than 20 feet and transmissivity is less than 5,000 feet squared per day. Pumping tests indicate horizontal to vertical ratios of hydraulic conductivity ranging from 2-27:1.</p>\n<p>Average annual precipitation is 27 inches, about 8 of which is recharge to the surficial aquifer. Regional ground-water movement is toward the Mississippi River, which transects the area. Tributary streams and lakes act as controls for local flow systems. At extreme low flow in August 1976, mainstem gains in streamflow in the Elk, St. Francis, Sauk, and Mississippi Rivers averaged 0.4, 0.4, 0.2, and 2.5 cubic feet per second per river mile, respectively.</p>\n<p>Ground water is of the calcium bicarbonate type and is suitable for most uses. Relatively high nitrate and chloride concentrations occur in a heavily irrigated area in Sherburne County.</p>\n<p>Surficial aquifers in Sherburne County and the Maine Prairie area of Stearns County were simulated by two-dimensional digital ground-water-flow models. Calibration was achieved by matching calculated water-table heads and streamflow gains with observed field values. Aquifer responses to pumping stresses under present and hypothetically expanded development were determined for average and below average recharge conditions.</p>\n<p>Irrigation withdrawals for 1977 totaling 15.6 cubic feet per second from 96 pumping centers were included in the Sherburne steady-state model. Increasing withdrawals to 52.2 cubic feet per second from 153 pumping centers would lower regional water levels as much as 8 feet within a few years at normal recharge rates.</p>\n<p>Irrigation withdrawals in 1977, totaling 2.0 cubic feet per second from 19 pumping centers, were included in the Maine Prairie steady-state model. Increasing withdrawals to 10.8 cubic feet per second from 42 pumping centers would lower regional water levels as much as 18 feet at normal recharge rates.</p>\n<p>Both modeled areas will support additional withdrawals, but caution must be exercised because lowering ground-water levels will also lower lake levels and reduce streamflow. However, by the standard methods used-batch processing and off-line plotting-the production of a finished map commonly takes 2-3 weeks. \r\n\r\nTo produce computer-generated maps more rapidly, cheaply, and easily, and also to provide an effective demonstration tool, we have devised two related methods for plotting maps as alternatives to conventional batch methods. These methods are: 1. Quick-Plot, an interactive program whose output appears on a CRT (cathode-ray-tube) device, and 2. The Interactive CAM (Cartographic Automatic Mapping system), which combines batch and interactive runs. The output of the Interactive CAM system is final compilation (not camera-ready) paper copy. Both methods are designed to use data from the CRIB file in conjunction with a map-plotting program. \r\n\r\nQuick-Plot retrieves a user-selected subset of data from the CRIB file, immediately produces an image of the desired area on a CRT device, and plots data points according to a limited set of user-selected symbols. This method is useful for immediate evaluation of the map and for demonstrating how trial maps can be made quickly. \r\n\r\nThe Interactive CAM system links the output of an interactive CRIB retrieval to a modified version of the CAM program, which runs in the batch mode and stores plotting instructions on a disk, rather than on a tape. The disk can be accessed by a CRT, and, thus, the user can view and evaluate the map output on a CRT immediately after a batch run, without waiting 1-3 days for an off-line plot.
