Hydrologic and climatologic data were collected at 10 small, mined and unmined watersheds in the Tug Fork basin of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. These data included continuous records of discharge, precipitation, and air temperature. Daily records of sediment concentrations and sediment discharges were also obtained and periodic observations of water-quality data taken. A compilation of all these data is presented. The observed climatic and hydrologic data from these basins were used to calibrate the U.S. Geological Survey Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System for each watershed. The calibrated models of each basin were then used with a set of nearby, long-term climatic data to simulate a long record of stream-flow. A 68-year record of daily streamflow and 57 years of annual peaks were simulated for each site. These simulated records were analyzed to obtain flood-frequency curves, flow-duration curves, mean-annual discharges, and the 7-day, 10-year low flow for each site. The flow characteristics computed from the simulated records of discharge were analyzed graphically and statistically by regression analysis to investigate the degree of relationship and to define the relationship between mining and runoff. For this sample of small basins, peak flows, discharges for 10- and 50-percent flow durations, and mean-annual flows are directly related to percent of drainage area disturbed (measured from aerial photos) and drainage area. Percent of drainage area disturbed is generally a more statistically significant estimator of discharge than drainage area, particularly for peak flows of higher recurrence intervals.

May 25-26, May 30-June 2, and June 12-13, 1980) strong winds from the north occurred at high altitudes. As a result, the volcanic ash fell some 50 miles to the south in the Bull Run watershed, the principal water-supply source for the metropolitan area of Portland, Oreg. Stream samples collected during the May-June period ranged in specific conductance from 18 to 28 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 6.7 to 7.5 pH units. Volcanic-ash samples were collected and analyzed for particle size, chemical composition, and weight. Significant differences in particle size of ash were found in samples from two separate eruptions. Each area had one site draining an unmined basin and a nearby site(s) draining a partly surface-mined basin. Flow-duration curves for streams draining surface-mined land had lower variability than those from unmined land. By adjusting an index of variability according to the percentage of surface-mined land in a basin, present techniques can be used to develop synthetic flow-duration curves. Surface mining changes basin characteristics so that peak flows decrease and low flows increase. Regression equations were developed relating storm runoff volume and peak discharge to basin characteristics and climatological data. Concentrations of dissolved solids, sulfate , and calcium were higher in streams draining extensively mined areas. Different mining areas of Illinois yield regional differences in concentrations of these substances. Surface-mined basins had lower suspended-sediment yields than unmined basins. The region has six world-class metal mines at present as well as additional evidence of widespread mineralization. Systematic investigations using modern mineral exploration techniques should reveal more mineral deposits suitable for development. Widespread evidence of lignite and geothermal resources suggests that intensive studies could identify producible energy sources in most Central American countries. Water supply and water quality vary greatly from country to country. Local problems of ground- and surface-water availability and of contamination create a need for systematic programs to provide better hydrologic data, capital improvements, and management. \r\n\r\nDisastrous earthquakes have destroyed or severely damaged many cities in Central America. Volcanic eruptions, landslides, mudflows, and floods have devastated most of the Pacific side of Central America at one time or another. A regional approach to earthquake, volcano, and flood-risk analysis and monitoring, using modern technology and concepts, would provide the facilities and means for acquiring knowledge necessary to reduce future losses. \r\n\r\nAll Central American countries need to strengthen institutions and programs dealing with earth and water resources and natural hazards. Some of these needs may be satisfied through existing or pending projects and technical and economic assistance from U.S. or other sources. The need for a comprehensive study of the natural resources of Central America and the requirements for their development is evident. The data available for about 1,000 sites were separated by aquifer units and hydrologic units. Selected statistical moments were described for 19 constituents including major ions. About 96 percent of all sites in the data base were sampled only once. The sample data were classified by aquifer unit and hydrologic unit and analysis of variance was run to determine if significant differences exist between the units within each of these two classifications for the same 19 constituents on which statistical moments were determined. Results of the analysis of variance indicated both classification variables performed about the same, but aquifer unit did provide more separation for some constituents. Samples from the Rogue River basin were classified by location within the flow system and type of flow system. The samples were then analyzed using analysis of variance on 14 constituents to determine if there were significant differences between subsets classified by flow path. Results of this analysis were not definitive, but classification as to the type of flow system did indicate potential for segregating water-quality data into distinct subsets.

Water levels and changes in water levels in these two aquifers differ greatly in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. The Mississippi, Minnesota, and St. Croix Rivers are in hydraulic connection with and influence the pattern of flow in the upper aquifer, the Prairie du Chien-Jordan. Water generally flows toward these streams from water-level highs northeast, northwest, and south of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Consequently, heavy pumping has caused only localized cones of depression in the potentiometric surface of this aquifer. In contrast, the Mount Simon-Hinckley, which has only a slight hydraulic connection to the streams, is greatly influenced by pumping. Pumping in the urban centers of Minneapolis and St. Paul has caused a large cone of depression in the Mount Simon-Hinckley potentiometric surface. During 1971, the measurable cone was centered in eastcentral Hennepin County, was about 25 miles in diameter, and was as much as 150 feet deep at its center.
\nBetween 1971 and 1980, average water levels in the Prairie du Chien-Jordan aquifer changed less than 5 feet in most of the study area, but rose or declined as much as 25 feet locally in response to pumpage and recharge. During this period, seasonal declines of water levels from winter to summer lessened, and the area where these declines exceeded 10 feet decreased.
\nIn contrast, between 1971 and 1980, average water levels in the Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer rose as much as 60 feet in the center of the cone of depression in response to decreased pumping. Also, the measurable cone of depression contracted from about 25 miles to about 15 miles in diameter. However, because of increased summer pumping due to below-average precipitation during 1980, seasonal water levels declined much more and over a wider area during 1980 than in 1971.
\nWater-level data suggest that (1) little variation in annual pumpage between 1971 and 1980 from the Prairie du Chien-Jordan aquifer produced generally stable water levels in that aquifer, (2) decreased annual pumpage from the Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer from 1971 to 1980 caused water levels in that aquifer to rise, and (3) a greater seasonal component of pumpage from the Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer than from the Prairie du Chien-Jordan produced larger and more widespread seasonal water-level declines in the Mount Simon-Hinckley than in the Prairie du Chien-Jordan, particularly during dry years.

oil shale in Kentucky: With a section on hydrologic reconnaissance of the oil shale outcrop in Kentucky","docAbstract":"Oil shales in Kentucky are rocks of predominantly Devonian age. The most prominant are the Ohio, Chattanooga, and New Albany Shales. A leaching study was done on six fresh oil shale samples and one retorted oil shale sample. Leaching reagents were distilled water, 0.0005 N sulfuric acid, and 0.05 N sulfuric acid. The concentration of constituents in the leachates were highly variable. The concentration of sodium, manganese, and zinc in the retorted shale leachate was several orders of magnitude higher than those of the leachates of fresh shale samples. The major oil shale outcrop covers approximately 1,000 square miles in a horseshoe pattern from Vanceburg, Lewis County , in the east, to Louisville, Jefferson County, in the west. The Kentucky, Red, and Licking Rivers cross the outcrop belt, the Rolling Fork River flows along the strike of the shale in the southwest part of the outcrop, and the Ohio River flows past the outcrop at the ends of the horseshoe. Oil shale does not appear to significantly alter the water quality of these streams. Oil shale is not an aquifer, but seeps and springs found in the shale indicate that water moves through it. Ground water quality is highly variable.
