Average annual precipitation ranges from 3 to 10 inches over the area. Ground water is utilized primarily for stock and domestic purposes, and occurs in the unconsolidated deposits as well as in the highly fractured consolidated rock. Ground-water levels in wells range from 5 to 600 feet below land surface, and well yields range from 3 to 1,200 gallons per minute throughout the study area. Records indicate that water levels are at or near their predevelopment levels. Springs occur along faults and formational contacts and generally discharge less than 5 gallons per minute. Measured ground-water outflow from Lanfair Valley at Piute Spring ranged from 100 to 630 acre-feet per year. Most of the water is of good quality for domestic and stock use. However , water from two wells indicates a concentration of sulfate that is above the recommended limit for drinking water. Water supplies are adequate for present needs. It is particularly well suited to analysis of aeromagnetic maps and profiles, where coverage commonly is of broad scope and statistical treatment is appropriate.
\n
The techniques developed by earlier workers for map data are readily adapted for depth estimates using aeromagnetic profiles. Three subroutines are presented: \"FRQAN\", which employs the complete Fourier transform to convert field intensity to the frequency domain and then computes the logarithmic energy spectrum; \"CSIZE\", which refines the spectrum to correct for the finite horizontal dimensions of magnetic sources, and \"ENSMTH\", which smooths the spectrum to clarify its decay characteristics. The average depths to sources of ensembles are obtained by manually fitting a straight line to each linear interval of the logarithmic energy-decay curve.
\n
If proper account is taken of the constraints of the method, it is capable of providing depth estimates to within an accuracy of about 10 percent under suitable circumstances. The estimates are unaffected by source magnetization and are relatively insensitive to assumptions as to source shape or distribution. The shallow hydrogeologic system is composed of glacial sediments. Pennsylvania shale and mudstone bedrock isolate the regional aquifers below from the hydrogeologic system in the overlying glacial deposits. Pebbly sand underlies 67 percent of the site. Two ground-water flow paths were identified. The primary path conveys ground water from the site to the east through the pebbly-sand unit; a secondary path conveys ground water to the south and east through less permeable material. The pebbly-sand unit provides an underdrain that eliminates the risk of water rising into the trenches. Digital computer model results indicate that the pebbly-sand unit controls ground-water movement. Tritium found migrating in ground water in the southeast corner of the site travels approximately 25 feet per year. A group of water samples from wells which contained the highest tritium concentrations had specific conductivities, alkalinities, hardness, and chloride, sulfate, calcium, and magnesium contents higher than normal for local shallow ground water. The aquifer is a major source for municipal and industrial water supply in Union County. Greatest withdrawal occurs near El Dorado. Because of this withdrawal, the potentiometric surface at El Dorado has been lowered more than 300 feet. Geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data indicate that water from a graben south and east of El Dorado is the source of contamination from salt within the El Dorado aquifer. The data indicates that surface brines and deeper aquifers are not the sources of chloride contamination. Lowering the potentiometric surface near El Dorado has caused water to move out of the graben toward El Dorado. Estimates based on interpretation of electric logs for two wells in the graben indicate chloride equivalents may be as high as 2,500 milligrams per liter in the aquifer. Concentrations outside the graben range from 130 to 650 milligrams per liter at the west end of the graben and from 25 to 150 milligrams per liter farther west and north. The overlying Bullfrog and Prow Pass Members are well exposed at the \ntype locality of the formation near the southeast edge of Crater Flat, just \nnorth of U.S. Highway 95. In previous work, the Tram Member was thought to be \nthe Bullfrog Member, and therefore was shown as Bullfrog or as \nundifferentiated Crater Flat Tuff on published maps. The revised Crater Flat \nTuff is stratigraphically below the Topopah Spring Member of the Paintbrush \nTuff and above the Grouse Canyon Member of the Belted Range Tuff, and is \napproximately 13.6 m.y. old.
\n
\n
Drill holes on Yucca Mountain and near Fortymile Wash penetrate all three \nmembers of the Crater Flat as well as an underlying quartz-poor unit, which is \nherein defined as the Lithic Ridge Tuff from exposures on Lithic Ridge near \nthe head of Topopah Wash. In outcrops between Calico Hills and Yucca Flat, \nthe Lithic Ridge Tuff overlies a Bullfrog-like unit of reverse magnetic polarity that probably correlates with a widespread unit around and under \nYucca Flat, referred to previously as Crater Flat Tuff. Although older, it may be \ngenetically related to the Crater Flat Tuff.
\n
\n
Although the rocks are poorly exposed, geophysical and geologic evidence \nto date suggests that (1) the source of the Crater Flat Tuff is a caldera \ncomplex in the Crater Flat area between Yucca Mountain and Bare Mountain, and \n(2) there are at least two cauldrons within this complex--one probably associated with eruption of the Tram, the other with the Bullfrog and Prow \nPass Members. The complex is named the Crater Flat-Prospector Pass caldera \ncomplex. These ponds have a history of summer algal blooms and fish kills. Water entering these ponds contains quantities of nitrogen and phosphorus far higher than the levels known to promote excessive growth of aquatic vegetation. As the water moves through the three ponds, nitrogen levels decrease. Although some nitrogen is lost to the atmosphere by denitrification, the bulk of the nitrogen probably is retained in the pond sediments. There is a net decrease in phosphorus in the water leaving Carding Millpond compared to the water entering Hager Pond. However, during most sampling periods, the phosphorus concentration of water leaving Carding Millpond is still above the level known to cause excessive growth of aquatic vegetation in lakes. During certain summer periods, there appears to be release of some phosphorus from the sediments in Carding and Grist Millponds. No improvement in water quality of the three ponds can be expected until the concentrations of nutrients entering Hager Pond are reduced to levels that will not support excessive growth of aquatic vegetation. The potentiometric surface ranged in altitude from more than 90 feet in the southeastern part of the county to less than 40 feet northwest of Lake Panasoffkee in the west-central area. These strata were deposited in several marine and nonmarine environments during early Late Cretaceous time. At north-trending outcrops along the eastern edge of the overthrust belt, the Frontier is of Cenomanian, Turonian, and early Coniacian age, and commonly is about 610 m (2,000 ft) thick. The formation in that area conformably overlies the Lower Cretaceous Aspen Shale and is divided into the following members, in ascending order: Chalk Creek, Coalville, Allen Hollow, Oyster Ridge Sandstone, and Dry Hollow. In west-trending outcrops on the northern flank of the Uinta Mountains in Utah, the Frontier is middle and late Turonian, and is about 60 m (200 ft) thick. These strata disconformably overlie the Lower Cretaceous Mowry Shale. In boreholes on the Moxa arch, the upper part of the Frontier is of middle Turonian to early Coniacian age and unconformably overlies the lower part of the formation, which is early Cenomanian at the south end and probably Cenomanian to early Turonian at the north end. The Frontier on the arch thickens northward from less than 100 m (328 ft) to more than 300 m (984 ft) and conformably overlies the Mowry. \r\n\r\nThe marine and nonmarine Frontier near the Uinta Mountains, marine and mnmarine beds in the upper part of the formation on the Moxa arch and the largely nonmarine Dry Hollow Member at the top of the Frontier in the overthrust belt are similar in age. Older strata in the formation, which are represented by the disconformable basal contact of the Frontier near the Uinta Mountains, thicken northward along the Moxa arch and westward between the arch and the overthrust belt. The large changes in thickness of the Frontier in the Green River Basin were caused mainly by differential uplift and truncation of the lower part of the formation during the early to middle Turonian and by the shoreward addition of progressively younger sandstone units at the top of the formation during the late Turonian and early Coniacian. \r\n\r\nThe sandstone in cores of the Frontier, from boreholes on the Moxa arch and the northern plunge of the Rock Springs uplift, consists of very fine grained and fine-grained litharenites and sublitharenites that were deposited in deltaic and shallow-water marine environments. These rocks consist mainly of quartz, chert, rock fragments, mixed-layer illite-smectite, mica-illite, and chlorite. Samples of the sandstone have porosities of 4.7 to 23.0 percent and permeabilities of 0.14 to 6.80 millidarcies, and seem to represent poor to fair reservoir beds for oil and gas. \r\n\r\nThe shale in cores of the Frontier Formation and the overlying basal Hilliard Shale, from the Moxa arch, Rock Springs uplift, and overthrust belt, was deposited in deltaic and offshore-marine environments. Samples of the shale are composed largely of quartz, micaillite, mixed-layer illite-smectite, kaolin, and chlorite. They also contain from 0.27 to 4.42 percent organic carbon, in humic and sapropelic organic matter. Most of the sampled shale units are thermally mature, in terms of oil generation, and a few probably are source rocks for oil and gas.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1290","usgsCitation":"Mereweather, E., Blackmon, P., and Webb, J., 1984, The Mid-Cretaceous Frontier Formation near the Moxa Arch, southwestern Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1290, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1290.","productDescription":"29 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":125139,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1290/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":65326,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1290/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67aeb2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mereweather, E.A.","contributorId":27524,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mereweather","given":"E.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":220058,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Blackmon, P.D.","contributorId":62210,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blackmon","given":"P.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":220059,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Webb, J.C.","contributorId":13302,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Webb","given":"J.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":220057,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
