Dune and lacustrine sands form a surficial aquifer that is the source of base flow to the ditch. Profiles established in July and August 1982 show that the average streambed slope of the ditch in the Lakeshore (0.19 percent) is six times that of the upstream east reach in the adjacent town, The Pines (0.03 percent). Although the ditch contains debris and vegetation, the reach in the Lakeshore seems to convey all the base flow it receives. In contrast, the upstream east arm contains several ponded sections where flow is sluggish. Digital model simulations show that dredging to form a uniformly graded streambed and eliminate ponding in the upstream east arm of the ditch south of The Pines could lower the water table 0.2 to 2.0 feet in The Pines. Lowering the ditch stage in the Lakeshore by 0.5 to 1.0 foot would cause additional water-table decline of less than 0.5 foot in The Pines. Lowering the ditch stage both in the Lakeshore and in The Pines could lower the water-table in the Lakeshore by nearly 1.0 foot. W. Boning, District Chief, Texas District. The Texas District office is located in the Federal Building, 300 East 8th Street, Austin, Texas 78701.</p>\n<p>As of January 1, 1984, 399 stream-gaging, 86 reservoir-contents, 19 stage, 2 periodic discharge through range, 42 flood-hydrograph partial-record, 15 floodprofile partial-record, 34 low-flow partial-record, 11 crest-stage partial-record, 11 tide-level , 60 daily chemical-qual ity, 27 continuous-recording water-quality, 187 periodic chemical-qual ity, 175 periodic organic-quality, 60 pesticides, 1 sediment, 43 periodic sediment, 109 periodic biological, 28 continuous-recording water temperature, and 37 national stream-quality accounting network stations were in operation. Plate 1 shows the location of surface-water streamflow or reservoircontent and chemical-qual ity or sediment stations in Texas. Plate 2 shows the location of partial-record surface-water stations.</p>\n<p>This index shows the station number and name, latitude and longitude, type of data collected, and the office principally responsible for the data collection (table 1). An 8-digit permanent numerical designation for gaging stations has been adopted on a nationwide basis; stations are numbered and listed in downstream order. In the downstream direction along the main stem, all stations on a tributary entering above a main-stem station are listed before that station. A tributary entering between two main-stem stations is listed between them. A similar order is followed in listing stations on first rank, second rank, and other ranks of tributaries. To indicate the rank of any tributary on which a gaging station is situated and the stream to which it is an immediate tributary, each indention in the listing of gaging stations represent one rank. This downstream order and system of indention show which gaging stations are on tributaries between any two stations on a main stem and the rank of the tributary on which each gaging station is situated. The climate is arid; few perennial streams are present in the region. Flash floods occasionally occur. The site is underlain by at least 1,800 meters of volcanic tuffs of Tertiary age; limestones and dolomites of Paleozoic age underlie much of the surrounding region, and, together with alluvial deposits, comprise the major aquifers. Yucca Mountain is in the Alkali Flat-Furnace Creek Ranch ground-water subbasin, which is part of the Death Valley ground-water basin. Discharge occurs at Alkali Flat almost entirely by evapotranspiration, and at Furnace Creek Ranch from small springs and seeps. Beneath Yucca Mountain, depth to water ranges from about 460 to 700 meters; the rock under consideration for construction of the repository is in the unsaturated zone. Rate of recharge at Yucca Mountain is small, perhaps much less than 5 millimeters per year. Within the saturated zone, water movement is principally along fractures. The hydraulic gradient is small east (downgradient) of Yucca Mountain, and increases to the north and west. From November 1978 to September 1980, Switzer Creek discharged 1,000 tons of suspended sediment, or 0.44 tons/acre. The maximum instantaneous suspended sediment concentration of 3 ,840 mg/L occurred during high water on September 14, 1979. Nitrogen loads, composed of nitrite plus nitrate total kjeldahl nitrogen, totaled 11 and 3.5 pounds/acre, respectively. Eighty percent of the total nitrogen load was transported during base flow. Of the nitrogen load transported during base flow, 88% was nitrite plus nitrate; of the total nitrogen load transported during high flows, 85% was organic nitrogen. Nearly 90% of the phosphorus load was transported during high flows as a result of its affinity for particulate matter. The load of total phosphorus as P totaled 0.63 pounds/acre, and total orthophosphorus as P totaled 0.19 pounds/acre. Nitrite plus nitrate from atmospheric sources totaled 8.4 pounds/acre, and ammonium totaled 3.9 pounds/acre. Equations relate streamflow to concentration and load of eight selected nutrients. Babelthuap is the second largest island in the Western Pacific and comprises more than 80 percent of the total land area of the Palau Islands. Most of the islands are uninhabited limestone ridges covered with dense vegetation. These islands have no freshwater resources and are not included in this report. The island of Koror with an area of 3.6 square miles is the administrative, commercial, and population center of Palau and has an annual average rainfall of 148 inches. Short-term rainfall records at other locations in the islands indicate little variation in annual rainfall throughout the Palau Islands. Runoff-to-rainfall ratios for streams on Babelthuap show that about 70 percent of the rain falling on the island runs off to the ocean. The uniformity of rainfall and basin characteristics is shown by the excellent correlation between mean annual rainfall on Koror and streamflow on Babelthuap and by the close correlations between discharge at gaging stations and partial-record sites. Surface water quality is generally very good as shown by 55 chemical analyses of water from 18 sources. The dissolved solids concentration of water samples did not exceed 66 milligrams per liter. Discharge data for the 1970-81 water years at 27 canal and river sites were analyzed. Flow was analyzed for 30-, 60-, 90-, 120-, and 183-consecutive-day low-mean discharges during the periods of highest flow to define minimum high-flow-period fresh surface-water discharges at the 27 sites. Curves show the magnitude and frequency of average minimum flows for consecutive-day periods during high-flow periods, and duration curves and tables show the percentage of time that selected discharges were equaled or exceeded. Canal discharge as high as 660 cubic feet per second occurred 70 percent of the time during the high-flow period at one site (Tamiami Canal Outlets, Levee 67A to 40-Mile Bend). At 11 sites, discharges of 110 to 370 cubic feet per second occurred 70 percent of the high-flow periods, while at 9 sites, discharges of 21 to 100 cubic feet per second occurred 70 percent of the time during the high-flow periods. At other sites (those in the Biscayne, Plantation Road, Middle River, C-111, and Cypress Creek Canals), discharges as low as 0.1 cubic foot per second occurred 70 percent of the time during the high-flow periods. Criteria for amounts of surplus freshwater considered adequate to support injection systems cannot be established, as they would vary greatly with water needs to be satisfied and with the efficiency of a particular injection system. However, based upon this analysis of discharge at 27 canal and river sites throughout south Florida, it appears that substantial amounts of water are available for surface injection and storage.
