Dark terrigenous sand is accumulating at a relatively rapid rate and has a carbonate fraction containing fresh-appearing angular particles. The pure-carbonate skeletal-sand sediment type has a much lower rate of deposition, and its old-appearing calcareous particles have a dull surface luster. The third sediment type, a mixture of the first two, is largely from beaches and is characterized by highly polished, very well-rounded grains. Differences in length of sea-floor exposure and intensity of abrasion appear to be responsible for the variable physical condition of the carbonate fractions. We suggest that on other shelves having less distinctive sedimentary regimes, the physical condition of the carbonate grains could be used to interpret present shelf processes.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0037-0738(79)90074-5","issn":"00370738","usgsCitation":"Pilkey, O.H., Fierman, E., and Trumbull, J.V., 1979, Relationship between physical condition of the carbonate fraction and sediment environments: Northern Puerto Rico shelf: Sedimentary Geology, v. 24, no. 3-4, p. 283-290, https://doi.org/10.1016/0037-0738(79)90074-5.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"283","endPage":"290","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221891,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Puerto Rico","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -67.02434868747426,\n 18.571814648729955\n ],\n [\n -67.02434868747426,\n 18.400854038198887\n ],\n [\n -66.48831086795659,\n 18.400854038198887\n ],\n [\n -66.48831086795659,\n 18.571814648729955\n ],\n [\n -67.02434868747426,\n 18.571814648729955\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"24","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50e4a737e4b0e8fec6cdc408","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pilkey, O. The Susitna River flows into upper Cook Inlet and is the source of clay minerals in Holocene deposits found in western lower Cook Inlet. The Copper River, in the northern Gulf of Alaska, provides clay minerals to the Kodiak shelf and southeastern lower Cook Inlet. In addition, crosion of local bedrock outcrops on the shelf produces some clays that are deposited on the Kodiak shelf. Current patterns can be inferred from the clay-mineral distribution pattern. The necessity to evaluate the effects of natural and man-made elemental excesses in the environment on health requires the establishment of requirements and tolerance limits for the various elements in water and crops. Maps of the geographic distribution of these elements in rocks, surficial materials and ground and surface waters are also essential for comparison with the occurrence of disease. Funding support for research projects that relate to various parameters of these problems emanates largely from a few federal agencies, and much of the work is conducted at government, university and private facilities. An example of the latter is the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council, which has several components that are addressing a variety of comparative studies of the geochemical environment related to health; studies involve specific trace elements (like selenium and magnesium), diseases (like cancer, urolithiasis and cardiovascular disease), other health factors (like aging and nutrition) and links with timely major problems (like the health effects of greatly increasing the use of coal).
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0079-1946(79)90077-6","issn":"00791946","usgsCitation":"Petrie, W., and Cannon, H., 1979, Research in the United States NCIC gathers descriptions of cartographic products held by Federal, State and local agencies, and private companies. Computerized information systems are used to edit, store, and distribute these descriptions. The Aerial Photography Summary Record System (APSRS) is NCIC's system for determining if photographs of a particular area, with a particular set of characteristics, are available, and if so, where they can be found. This guide defines the procedures for planning and conducting visits to potential contributors to the APSRS data base. (See the geographic index map on sheet 1 for location of the area studied.) The profiles reveal the interplay of tectonism, sedimentation, and cyclic fluctuations of sea level in the building and geologic evolution of the continental terrace. The sequence of sediments studied extends to about 200 meters (m) beneath the sea-floor surface. Four seismic-stratigraphic units underlain by four prominent sound reflectors were identified and mapped.
\n
\n
This geologic synthesis, for which the research was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), is but one aspect of a coordinated, multidisciplinary environmental study of the South Texas Outer Continental Shelf sponsored by BLM (Berryhill, 1976, 1977). The environmental studies are keyed to the leasing of Federal Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) lands for petroleum exploration and production. Their purpose is to provide the data development of petroleum resources on the OCS, as well as to provide the basis for predicting the impact of oil and gas exploration and production on the marine environment. Of primary concern is the recognition of geologic conditions that might be hazardous to structures placed on the sea floor. Geologic hazards relate directly to the potential for significant movement of the sea floor in the future. Judging sea-floor stability and recognizing geologic features that are potentially hazardous require an understanding of the recent geologic history of the area, which, in turn, entails determining the relative rates and interactions of sedimentation and tectonism through time.
\n
\n
In addition to the primary objective, the synthesis provides knowledge about the magnitude and extent of sea-level fluctuations in the western Gulf of Mexico, and it provides a depositional facies model of possible use in appraising the resource potential of the more deeply buried sediments.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Denver, CO","doi":"10.3133/mf1134","isbn":"0607806249","usgsCitation":"Pyle, C.A., Berryhill, H.L., and Trippet, A.R., 1979, Maps showing late Pleistocene and Holocene evolution of the South Texas continental shelf: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1134, 2 Sheets: 50.13 x 36.20 inches; 41.96 x 33.93 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1134.","productDescription":"2 Sheets: 50.13 x 36.20 inches; 41.96 x 33.93 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179880,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1134.jpg"},{"id":283652,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1134/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":283653,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1134/plate-2.pdf"}],"scale":"92000","country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"South Texas Continental Shelf","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -97.0,26.0 ], [ -97.0,28.0 ], [ -96.0,28.0 ], [ -96.0,26.0 ], [ -97.0,26.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a19e4b07f02db605b3b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pyle, Carroll A.","contributorId":58343,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pyle","given":"Carroll","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":264126,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Berryhill, Henry L. The target was the crest of a diapiric salt mass and the overlying, deformed caprock. The interpretations reveal an undulating salt surface with as much as 80 meters of relief. Three pollen zones are recognized; the earliest is characterized by high frequencies of pine pollen and is correlated with a mid-Wisconsinan interstade of the mid-continent. The middle zone contains high frequencies of both pine and fir (Abies, probably A. grandis) pollen and is correlated with the last full glacial interval (upper Wisconsinan). The upper zone is dominated by redwood (Sequoia) pollen and represents latest Pleistocene to middle Holocene. The past few thousand years are not represented in the core. The pollen evidence indicates that during the full glacial period the mean annual temperature at the site was about 2° C to 3° C lower than it is today. We attribute this small difference to the stabilizing effect of marine upwelling on the temperature regime in the immediate vicinity of the coast. Individual maps can then be overlaid on or combined with other maps to characterize the terrain. Integrated terrain mapping combines several terrain features into each map unit which, in many cases, is more directly related to uses of the land and to methods of land management than the single features alone. Terrain brightness, as measured by the multispectral scanners in Landsat 1 and 2, represents an integration of reflectance from the terrain features within the scanner's instantaneous field of view and is therefore more correlatable with integrated terrain units than with differentiated ones, such as rocks, soils, and vegetation. \r\n\r\nA test of the feasibilty of the technique of mapping integrated terrain units was conducted in a part of southwestern Queensland, Australia, in cooperation with scientists of the Queensland Department of Primary Industries. The primary purpose was to test the use of digital classification techniques to create a 'land systems map' usable for grazing land management. A recently published map of 'land systems' in the area (made by aerial photograph interpretation and ground surveys), which are integrated terrain units composed of vegetation, soil, topography, and geomorphic features, was used as a basis for comparison with digitally classified Landsat multispectral images. The land systems, in turn, each have a specific grazing capacity for cattle (expressed in beasts per km 2 ) which is estimated following analysis of both research results and property carrying capacities. \r\n\r\nLandsat images, in computer-compatible tape form, were first contrast-stretched to increase their visual interpretability, and digitally classified by the parallelepiped method into distinct spectral classes to determine their correspondence to the land systems classes and to areally smaller, but readily recognizable, 'land units.' \r\n\r\nMany land systems appeared as distinct spectral classes or as acceptably homogeneous combinations of several spectral classes. The digitally classified map corresponded to the general geographic patterns of many of the land systems. Statistical correlation of the digitally classified map and the published map was not possible because the published map showed only land systems whereas the digitally classified map showed some land units as well as systems. \r\n\r\nThe general correspondence of spectral classes to the integrated terrain units means that the digital mapping of the units may precede fieldwork and act as a guide to field sampling and detailed terrain unit description as well as measuring of the location, area, and extent of each unit. \r\n\r\nExtension of the Landsat mapping and classification technique to other arid and semi-arid regions of the world may be feasible.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp1102","usgsCitation":"Robinove, C.J., 1979, Integrated terrain mapping with digital Landsat images in Queensland, Australia: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1102, iv, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1102.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":33675,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1102/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124505,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1102/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d640","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robinove, Charles Joseph","contributorId":71153,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robinove","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"Joseph","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152529,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Sulfide minerals include pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and minor chalcopyrite, and galena-rich samples contain substantial amounts of silver. These minerals occur in a quartz-carbonate gangue along northeast-trending faults and fractures that exhibit (left?) lateral and vertical slip. The sense of fault movement and the northeasterly strike are consistent with predicted conjugate fault sets of the present San Andreas fault system. The sulfide mineralization is younger than the Franciscan rocks of Point Delgada and King Range, and it may have accompanied or postdated the inception of San Andreas faulting. Mineralization largely preceded uplift, the formation of a marine terrace, and the emplacement of landslide-related debris-flow breccias that overlie the mineralized rocks and truncate the sulfide veins. These field relations indicate that the sulfide mineralization and inception of San Andreas faulting were clearly more recent than the early Miocene and that the mineralization could be younger than about 1.2 m.y. \r\n\r\nThe sulfide veins at Point Delgada may be of economic significance. However, prior to any exploitation of the occurrence, economic and environmental conflicts of interest involving private land ownership, the Shelter Cove home development, and proximity of the coast must be resolved.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79584","usgsCitation":"McLaughlin, R.J., Sorg, D.H., Ohlin, H., and Heropoulos, C., 1979, Base and precious metal occurrences along the San Andreas Fault, Point Delgada, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-584, 11 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79584.","productDescription":"11 p.","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":408228,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_11319.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":34309,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0584/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":139555,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0584/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Point Delgada","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -124.082,\n 40.017\n ],\n [\n -124.046,\n 40.017\n ],\n [\n -124.046,\n 40.049\n ],\n [\n -124.082,\n 40.049\n ],\n [\n -124.082,\n 40.017\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db6492aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McLaughlin, Robert J. 0000-0002-4390-2288 rjmcl@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4390-2288","contributorId":1428,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McLaughlin","given":"Robert","email":"rjmcl@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153926,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sorg, D. It was preceded by 61 foreshocks that began on June 7, 1975, and was followed by thousands of aftershocks. Several studies have reported locations or analyses of various subsets of the Oroville sequence, including Morrison and others (1975), Savage and others (1975), Lester and others (1975), Toppozada and others (1975), Ryall and others (1975), Bufe and others (1976), Morrison and others (1976), and Lahr and others (1976). In this report arrival time data have been compiled from the original records at several institutions to produce a single catalog of the Oroville sequence from June 7, 1975, through July 31, 1976. This study has four objectives:

to compile a list of earthquakes in the Oroville sequence that is as complete as possible above the minimum magnitude threshold of approximately 1.0;

to determine accurate and uniform hypocentral coordinates for the earthquakes;

to determine reliable and consistent magnitude values for the sequence; and

to provide a statistically uniform basis for further investigation of the physical processes involved in the Oroville sequence as revealed by the parameters of the foreshocks and aftershocks.

The basis and procedures for the data analysis are described in this report.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/ofr79932","usgsCitation":"Mantis, C., Lindh, A., Savage, W., and Marks, S., 1979, Catalog of Oroville, California, earthquakes; June 7, 1975 to July 31, 1976: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-932, 136 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79932.","productDescription":"136 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140129,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0932/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":335812,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0932/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f3e4b07f02db5efc37","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mantis, Constance","contributorId":75804,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mantis","given":"Constance","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153998,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lindh, Allan","contributorId":63800,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lindh","given":"Allan","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153997,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Savage, William","contributorId":16700,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Savage","given":"William","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153996,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Marks, Shirley","contributorId":99816,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marks","given":"Shirley","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153999,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}
