The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953, as amended in 1978 (43 U.S.C. 1331 et seq.), grants to the Secretary of the Interior the authority to issue leases for minerals on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). It provides the authority and guidelines which the Secretary utilizes fo7 expeditious exploration and development of the OCS while ensuring timely access to information by affected states and local governments in order that appropriate planning will anticipate and ameliorate impacts from such OCS activities.
The carbonatite stock at Iron Hill is part of an alkalic complex of Cambrian or latest Precambrian age containing pyroxenite, uncompahgrite, ijolite, nepheline syenite, and related rocks characterized by their subsilicic composition and by their lack of calcic plagioclase. Thorium averages 36.2 parts per million (ppm) Th (0.0041 percent Th02) in the carbonatite, which also contains considerably more Ba, Ce, Nd, La, Nb, P, Mn, Mo, Sr, U, and rare-earth elements than average igneous rocks. Thorium content of the carbonatite ranges from 6 ppm Th (0.0007 percent Th02) 150 ppm Th (0.017 percent Th02), and several areas of anomalous concentration are apparent. The distribution of thorium is not the same as the distribution of niobium and rare-earth elements. Thorium abundances of the level found in the carbonatite at Iron Hill are of little economic interest unless considered as a byproduct of potential niobium, rare-earth, and uranium exploitation.

The areas potentially affected, consisting of 22 coastal states and Pennsylvania, can be grouped into four major areas: Alaska, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific. The Alaska Area has three lease sale areas: Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea and the Chukchi and the Beaufort Sea (see Figures I and 2).
Most of the information used by both the government and industry on the hydrocarbon potential of the Alaska Area is initially acquired and compiled on a regional basis. These data are used by industry in nominating tracts for lease and in preparation of bids and by the Department of the Interior for general sale area identification, tract selection, environmental impact statements and resource evaluation. Subsequent environmental information and data analysis is directed toward defining specific sub-areas and site-specific evaluation.

Analyses for 70 elements in plants showed that, statistically, the concentration of 7 environmentally important elements, cadmium, chromium, fluorine, selenium, uranium, vanadium, and zinc, were related to emissions from phosphate-processing operations. Two additional elements, lithium and nickel, show probable relationships. The literature on the effects of these elements on plant and animal health is briefly surveyed. Relations between element content in plants and distance from the phosphate-processing operations were stronger at Soda Springs than at Pocatello and, in general, stronger in sagebrush than in the grasses. Analyses for 58 elements in soils showed that, statistically, beryllium, fluorine, iron, lead, lithium, potassium, rubidium, thorium, and zinc were related to emissions only at Pocatello and only in the A horizon. Moreover, six additional elements, copper, mercury, nickel, titanium, uranium, and vanadium, probably are similarly related along the same transect. The approximate amounts of elements added to the soils by the emissions are estimated. In C-horizon soils, no statistically significant relations were observed between element concentrations and distance from the processing sites. At Soda Springs, the nonuniformity of soils at the sampling locations may have obscured the relationship between soil-element content and emissions from phosphate processing.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The East Tintic mining district is in the east-central part of the East Tintic Mountains, near the east margin of the Basin and Range province in Utah and Juab Counties, Utah. The district occupies the northeastern part of the Eureka quadrangle and is about 5 mi (8 km) wide and 6 mi (9.7 km) long. Officially it is within the designated boundaries of the Tintic mining district, but it generally though erroneously has been regarded as a separate district since the late 1800's.
Prospecting was first undertaken in East Tintic in 1870; although small quantities of ore were produced in 1899 and from 1909 to 1913, the district first achieved prominence in 1916 with the discovery of the totally concealed Central ore body of the Tintic Standard mine. Within a few years of this discovery, the Tintic Standard became one of the most productive silver mines in the world. Additional discoveries of important concealed ore deposits have continued to be made in the district, including the North Lily mine in 1927, the Eureka Lilly and Eureka Standard mines in 1928, the Burgin mine in 1958, and the Trixie mine in 1969.
To December 31, 1975, the East Tintic mining district has yielded approximately 4.83 million short tons (4.38 million tonnes) of silver, gold, and base-metal ores, largely from concealed deposits overlain by many hundreds of feet of barren rocks. These ores have a gross valuation of approximately $231 million. The district first achieved prominence in 1916 with the discovery of the ore bodies of the Tintic Standard mine, which for a time was the world's richest silver producer (Lindgren, 1933, p. 588). By 1946 this deposit and a number of other deposits discovered and developed nearby had been exhausted, and the district became dormant. A dramatic revival of, mining activities in the East Tintic district began in 1956 after the discovery and subsequent development of the concealed Burgin ore bodies in an area 1 mile (1.6 km) southeast of the Tintic Standard that previously had been only superficially prospected. As in the earlier history of the district, the Burgin development has led to the discovery of other concealed deposits, focusing international attention on the revitalization of a nearly abandoned mining district by the application of geologic and geochemical techniques.

Also not included are data on many claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, some of those in MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (OF 77-169A), p. 20). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement on my part that the claims are not valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposit that might be present.
This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of references arranged alphabetically by occurrence name; a section that lists synonyms for names in the first section, the names of operators and owners of mines and prospects, and claim names; and a section that lists, by author, all references summarized in the first section or mentioned in intruductory remarks.

The dissolved-oxygen reduction is due only in part to the municipal-waste discharges which enter the river. In addition, concentrations of pesticides have been reported consistently at one long-term station on the river, and trace metals have been reported at two long-term monitoring sites.
The U.S. Geological Survey conducted an intensive study of the L'Anguille River basin during the summer and fall of 1978. This study was done in cooperation with the Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology to fulfill the requirements of section 208 of Public Law 92-500. An assessment of the general water quality was made, the causes of stream-dissolved-oxygen reductions were determined, and the occurrence of pesticides and trace metals in the basin was documented. A steady-state, segmented, dissolved-oxygen model was calibrated and used to project simulated dissolved-oxygen profiles.
Pesticides are used extensively in the basin and their occurrence in streams throughout the basin is documented. Concentrations of DDT from the river were as high as 110 micrograms per kilogram in streambed material, whereas 1,600 micrograms per kilogram of DDE and 530 micrograms per kilogram of DDD were found in bottom-feeding fish. In addition, toxaphene concentrations of 45 micrograms per kilogram were found in streambed material and concentrations of 3,400 micrograms per kilogram were found in fish.
Concentrations of iron and manganese, at times, exceeded recommended limits for human consumption. Also, dissolved solids, chloride, and sulfate occasionally exceeded the water-quality standards set by the State.
Streambed materials consist of deposited sand, silt, clay, and organic matter. The respiration of bacteria, fungi, and benthic invertebrates, which feed on the organic matter, accounts for most of the dissolved-oxygen reduction in the river. The sources of the streambed materials include municipal wastes, agricultural fertilizers, fluvial sediment, and natural organic matter. Model projections indicate that a reduction of 60 percent in the streambed-oxygen demand would allow the stream-dissolved-oxygen concentrations to remain at or greater than 5.0 milligrams per liter.

in the soil gas and helium/radon ratios in the ground water for deposits of this nature. The helium in soil-gas concentrations are typical of the concentrations found associated with other low-grade uranium deposits in other areas. The distribution of the values probably reflects local structure and is influenced by surface activities such as farming and mining. The helium/radon ratios in water strikingly reveal the known orebody, and some samples taken for background information may indicate the presence of nearby mineralized areas.
