Potentiometric levels declined 4 to 21 feet between September 1978 and May 1979, in the citrus and farming sections of southern Hillsborough, northern Hardee, southwestern Polk, northwestern DeSoto, and Manatee Counties. Water levels in these areas are widely affected by pumping for irrigation and have the greatest range in fluctuations. Water-level declines ranged from 0 to 6 feet in coastal, northern, and southern areas of the Water Management District. Generally potentiometric levels were higher than previous May levels due to heavy rains in April and May. Although many size analyses of the same formations have been reported in the literature, the methods of sample collection, preparation, and sieving were not uniform, and the results of the different studies therefore are not comparable. This investigation is intended to supply a uniform data base that will be useful for a variety of practical and scientific purposes. A total of 276 samples was collected from the St. Peter Sandstone and Everton, Oil Creek, McLish, and Tulip Creek Formations at the 29 locations shown on figure 1. At each location 4-14 samples were taken at about equal intervals from the base to the top of the sandstone exposure. Each sample of about 500 gm was obtained from a strati-graphic interval of no more than 10 cm. Each sample was air dried, and lumps were broken with a rubber pestle (some samples were case-hardened but none was firmly cemented). A representative fraction of 50 to 120 gm was separated by use of a sample splitter. This fraction was then weighed to the nearest .1 gm and agitated for 30 seconds in water in a kitchen blender. The process efficiently broke apart the remaining small lumps and freed the sand surfaces of clay and almost all of the iron oxide. The sample was then washed on a sieve having openings of .06 mm in order to remove clay and silt-size particles. The remaining sample, composed of clean loose sand, was then oven-dried. Each sample of dry sand was sieved for 10 minutes in a stack of 12 or more sieves on a mechanical shaker, and the size fractions were weighed to the nearest .1 gm. Maximum permitted annual ground-water withdrawals of 750 acre-feet for industrial use were combined with three irrigation-pumping scenarios to predict the long-term effects on ground-water levels and streamflows. Total annual ground-water withdrawals of 8,806 acre-feet, 8,033 acre-feet, and 5,045 acre-feet were predicted to produce average water-level declines of 5 feet or more over areas of 99, 96, and 68 square miles, respectively, at the end of a 40-year simulation period. The first two pumping scenarios were predicted to produce average drawdowns of more than 50 feet over areas of 1.5 and 0.8 square miles, respectively, while the third scenario resulted in average drawdowns of less than 50 feet throughout the study area. In addition, these three pumping scenarios were predicted to cause streamflow reductions of 2.6, 2.0, and 1.4 cubic feet per second, respectively, in the Laramie River and 4.9, 4.7, and 3.7 cubic feet per second, respectively, in the North Laramie River at the end of the 40-year simulation period. This water has been permitted for agricultural use by the State of Wyoming, and under the proposal would supplement, when needed, existing industrial surface- and ground-water supplies for the Laramie River Station of the Missouri Basin Power Project. Under a scenario wherein the supplemental industrial usage occurs in every 10th year commencing in 1980, the model predicts a cumulative streamflow-depletion rate in the Laramie and North Laramie Rivers of 7.7 cubic feet per second in the year 2020 compared to a rate of 6.9 cubic feet per second that is predicted if the intermittent industrial usage does not occur. Areas in which drawdowns relative to the simulated 1973 head configuration exceed 5, 10, 25, and 50 feet are predicted to be 107, 78, 38, and 2 square miles, respectively, in 2020 under the intermittent-usage scenario compared to corresponding areas of 104, 76, 36, and 2 square miles that are predicted if the intermittent industrial usage does not occur. Some of these blocks are far traveled, as shown by paleomagnetic and paleontologic studies. More than 25 discrete tectonostratigraphic terranes now are known, each of which exhibits a characteristic internal stratigraphic sequence that differs markedly from that of neighboring terranes.</p><p>Lower Mesozoic rocks, which are widely distributed in these terranes, provide the most complete information for analyzing regional depositional and structural patterns. Sedimentary and volcanic facies of this age include: nonmarine red beds with minor intercalated basalt flows; extensive subaerial plateau basalt flows; shallow marine sandstone, conglomerate, and siltstone; inner to outer platform carbonate rocks; deep-water limestone, chert, cherty crystal tuff, and argillite; pillow basalt with associated deep-water volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks; and andesitic flows, tuffs, and volcanoclastic rocks with marine fossils. No systematic depositional patterns are perceived that indicate that these contrasting facies were deposited in their present structural positions; instead, large-scale tectonic juxtaposition is required.</p><p>The dominant structures produced during accretion were thrust faults that were modified by concurrent and later strike-slip faults. Some terranes may be enormous nappes, but much more detailed stratigraphic and structural studies are needed, with emphasis on the age and stratigraphy of deep-water siliceous and carbonate rocks, before the complex history of deposition and subsequent accretion can be adequately elucidated.</p><p><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Precipitation, the main source of water in the area, ranges from slightly less than 6 inches (152 millimeters) per year in the lowlands to more than 30 inches per year (762 millimeters) in the Henry Mountains and along the western boundary.</p><p>Rocks that crop out in or underlie the area range from the Precambrian to the Holocene in age. The thickness of the composite section of sedimentary rocks ranges from about 7,300 feet (2,200 meters) to about 23,000 feet (7,000 meters). The Entrada, Navajo, Wingate, and Coconino Sandstones and rocks of Mississippian age are considered major aquifers because of their large areal extent or thickness or their known locally large yields to wells. The chemical quality of the water in these aquifers ranges from fresh to briny.</p><p>The permeability of the aquifers in the area is affected by folding, faulting, and igneous intrusion. These geologic processes have locally enhanced ground-water circulation by fracturing or impeded circulation by offsetting permeable beds or sealing some zones with rocks of lower permeability.</p><p>The total hydrologic system in the lower Dirty Devil River basin has estimated long-term average annual inflow and outflow of about 1.6 million acre-feet (1,970 cubic hectometers), of which about 1.55 million acre-feet (1,910 cubic hectometers) is derived from precipitation. An estimated 96 percent of the water available to the area is consumed by evapotranspiration.</p><p>The estimated gross annual average ground-water recharge is 34,000 acre-feet (42 cubic hectometers), of which 5,000 acre-feet (6.2 cubic hectometers) recharges the Navajo Sandstone. Recoverable fresh to moderately saline water stored in the Navajo, Wingate, and Coconino Sandstones is estimated to be 210 million acre-feet (259,000 cubic hectometers), of which 89 million acre-feet (110,000 cubic hectometers) is stored in the Navajo alone.</p><p>Long-term large withdrawals from the Navajo Sandstone are feasible. Withdrawal of 12,000 gallons per minute (757 liters per second) over a period of about 36 years probably would diminish the amount of water in storage by less than 1 percent. The withdrawals, would eventually diminish the average annual discharge of the Dirty Devil River by possibly as much as 13 cubic feet per second (0.37 cubic meter per second). A change of this magnitude on the flow of the Colorado River would be too small to measure.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological LEE over the entire Bering Sea region. 75 successful sonobuoy refraction and wide angle reflection stations were recorded over the shelf areas of Navarin Basin, St. George Basin and Umnak Plateau, and the deep ocean areas of Bowers Basin and the Aleutian Basin. Of these, 18 were in shallow water depths (less than 200 meters), 21 were in intermediate depths (200 to 3000 meters) and 36 were in deep water (greater than 3000 meters). The shortest of the sonobuoy lines is 3 nautical miles (5.6 km) while the longest is almost 42 n.m. (78 km). The average distance 1s 17 n.m. (21 km). These belts of plutons or batholithic complexes are curvilinear to linear and trend parallel or subparallel to the continental margin. The belts represent the principal loci of emplacement for plutons of specific ages and although there is spatial or temporal overlap in some cases, they are more commonly spatially and temporally distinct. Intermediate lithologies such as quartz diorite, tonalite, and granodiorite dominate in most of the Belts but granodiorite and granite characterize one. The belts are of Mesozoic or Cenozoic age and plutonism began in six of them at about 195, 175, 120, 75, 60, and 40 m.y. ago; age relations in two are poorly known. Ground-water levels ranged from 0.3 foot above to 0.1 foot below average. The highest and lowest ground-water levels for the year were 1 foot below and 1 foot above their long-term average. In the Hialeah-Miami Springs area , water levels in wells near the centers of the heaviest pumping ranged from 7.2 to 11.9 feet below mean sea level, 1929; and in the Southwest well-field area, ground-water levels near the centers of pumping ranged from 1.0 foot above to 1.5 feet below mean sea level. In 1977 the combined average daily discharge from nine major streams and canals that flow eastward into tidal waters was 1,712 cubic feet per second (cfs), 46 cfs above the combined average daily flow for 1976. The combined average daily flow through the Tamiami Canal outlets was 582 cfs, 201 cfs above that of 1976. The 1977 position of the salt front in the coastal part of the Biscayne aquifer was about the same as in 1976, except south of Homestead Air Force Base where the salt front had encroached farther inland. About 1,860 square miles of the area are underlain by sufficient saturated material to supply groundwater for irrigation. Saturated thickness in the area ranges from less than 50 feet to about 270 feet. Thickness of saturated deposits in the unconsolidated aquifer in west-central Kansas has decreased as a result of groundwater withdrawals, principally for irrigation. From 1950 to 1979, the decrease in saturated thickness was negligible in some areas and as much as 80 feet in other areas. The data have been reexamined and intensities assigned where none had been assigned before, on the basis of available data. Other intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. The data shown in table 1 are estimates of the most accurate hypocenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. Known or suspected explosions are listed in table 1 but are not plotted on the seismicity map.</p><p>The data in table 1 were used to compile the seismicity map. The latitude and longitude were rounded to the nearest tenth of a degree and sorted so that all identical locations were grouped together and counted. A triangle represents the epicenter plotted to a tenth of a degree. The number of earthquakes at each location is shown on the map by the number to the right of the triangle. A Roman numeral to the left of a triangle is the maximum Modified Mercalli intensity (Wood and Neumann, 1931) of all earthquakes located at that geographic position. The absence of an intensity value indicates that no intensities have been assigned to earthquakes at that location. A year shown below a triangle is the latest year for which the maximum intensity was recorded.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
