This sedimentary sequence, together with the Proterozoic Hinckley Sandstone and the Quaternary drift, is divided into six regional aquifers: undifferentiated drift, Upper Carbonate, St. Peter, Prairie du Chien-Jordan, Ironton-Galesville, and Mount Simon-Hinckley.</p>\n<p>Potentiometric-surface maps for each aquifer indicate that movement of ground water is predominantly toward the major rivers. The St. Croix, Minnesota, and Mississippi Rivers constitute regional discharge boundaries for ground-water flow. A major ground-water divide in the St. Peter, Prairie du Chien-Jordan, Ironton-Galesville, and Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifers in the south-central part of the Hollandale embayment separates ground-water flow northward toward the Twin Cities area and southward toward Iowa. The St. Peter and Prairie du Chien-Jordan aquifers in the southeastern part of the embayment contain ground-water mounds as high as 90 ft above the regional potentiometric surface. The mounds occur as a result of increased recharge where the Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining bed has been removed by erosion and the aquifers subcrop beneath drift that is about 20 ft thick. This head distribution produces a locally complex pattern of flow in which ground water moves southwesterly toward Iowa instead of directly toward the Mississippi The density and acoustic velocity logs indicate extensive fracturing in each of the drill holes. Variations in the relative amount of felsic or mafic mineral components in the rocks can be inferred from the magnetic susceptibility and gamma ray well log responses. The principal analysis of the records has been based on Develocorder films; and background earth noise levels have been adjusted to be about 1 to 2 mm p-p on the film readers. Since the traces are separated by only 10 to 12 mm on the reader screen, they become hopelessly tangled when signal amplitudes on several adjacent traces exceed 10 to 20 mm p-p. Thus, the background noise level is hardly more than 20 db below the level of largest readable signals. The situation is somewhat better on tape playbacks, but the high level of background noise set to accommodate processing from film records effectively limits the range of maximum-signal to background-earth-noise on high gain channels to a little more than 30 db. Introduction of the PDP 11/44 seismic data acquisition system has increased the potential dynamic range of recorded network signals to more than 60 db. To make use of this increased dynamic range we must evaluate the characteristics and performance of the seismic system. In particular, we must determine whether the electronic noise in the system is or can be made sufficiently low so that background earth noise levels can be lowered significantly to take advantage of the increased dynamic range of the digital recording system. Hydrologic maps of the potentiometric surface, water-level changes and depths to water in the aquifer, based on Spring 1983 measurements, are presented. The Mississippi River Alluvial Aquifer is comprised of Quaternary alluvial flood-plain and terrace deposits. The aquifer generally is partially-confined. Recharge to the aquifer is principally through precipitation and surface-water bodies. The potentiometric surface map indicates two cones of depression occurring in the aquifer beneath Arkansas, Poinsett, and Cross Counties as a result of heavy pumpage within these areas. A comparison of water-level data from 1982 and 1983 shows water levels in the aquifer generally decreasing in the area within the cones of depression. Water levels generally increased in the remainder of the area south and west of the White River, and along the Mississippi River. A map showing the depth to water below land surface indicates that water levels are generally shallowest near the Mississippi River and the Fall Line and deepest within the cone of depression. The quadrangle contains surficial Quaternary deposits and locally exposed underlying upper Proterozoic intrusive, volcanic, and volcaniclastic rocks.</p>\n<p>The oldest rocks, gabbro and pyroxenite, are tentatively correlated with the Ha'il mafic-ultramafic complex to the north of the quadrangle. Two younger volcanic sequences, structurally more or less distinct but compositionally transitional, have been identified. The Aqab formation (about 640-610 Ma old) consists of slightly metamorphosed, moderately to strongly folded flows and tuffs of basalt, dacite, and minor rhyolite. An interlayered subaerial conglomerate and a lack of deep-marine sediments distinguish the Aqab from the older and distinctly oceanic Nuf formation. The.Aqab formation is overlain by felsic ash-flow tuffs and related fragmental rocks of the Al 'Awshaziyah formation whose major source is a large caldera in the western part of the quadrangle.</p>\n<p>Plutonic rocks include granites that predate and postdate both the Aqab and Al 'Awshaziyah formations. The youngest granites, dated at about 580 Ma, are the Salma and Ar Rumman batholiths and are more -alkaline and more silicic than the older granites. The Ar Rumman granite is peralkaline. Even the youngest intrusive rocks have been cut by faults that are probably related to the northwest-trending Najd fault system. No metallic mineralization has been recognized in the quadrangle. Precipitation depths ranged from 12.2 inches in 1 day on the west side to 1.33 inches on the east side. Unit peak discharge ranged from 626 cubic feet per second per square mile on the west side to 83 cubic feet per second per square mile on the east side. The median recurrence interval of peak flow on the west side is 22 years, whereas on the east side it is 6.8 years. Development of a relation between rainfall at Ben Lomond and runoff on the San Lorenzo River at Big Trees shows that the significant climatic factors that describe the flood hydrology of the basin are (1) precipitation for the 3 consecutive days including the day of peak flows and (2) precipitation for a 60-day duration prior to the peak. A study of historical floods and precipitation characterisitics in the San Lorenzo River basin suggests that major floods in the area are the product of (1) greater-than-normal antecedent precipitation for up to 60 days prior to the flood and (2) subsequent intense frontal-type storms immediately prior to the peak. It accumulated freshwater from adjacent rivers and springs and drained to the ocean through unobserved subterranean conduits. Forced drainage by pumping of Cano Tiburones for agriculture was begun in 1949, and resulted in lowering the water level to below sea level. The reversed hydraulic gradient permitted seawater to enter the Cano through the conduits forming seawater \"springs\". Seawater flooding caused widespread sodium chloride contamination in the canals and laterals and in the soils. Agricultural expectations of the area were not realized.</p><p>The present investigation into the freshening potential of Cano Tiburones (1979-1982) determined that ground-water discharge does not contribute to salty conditions.</p><p>On-site experiments were performed to segregate freshwater from seawater using differences in hydraulic head. Dams were constructed on canals and laterals, forcing accumulated saltwater to the ocean. Ring levees were placed around the discharging seawater conduits until sea level was reached and flow to the system stopped.</p><p>These efforts have succeeded in reducing the amount of seawater in Cano Tiburones to one-third of its original concentration.
