This report complements the previous reports by providing new petrographic and geochemical data for samples from St. Paul and St. George Islands and from two dredge hauls near St. George Island (Fig. 1).</p><p>The geologic setting of the Pribilof Islands region is given by Barth (1956), Hopkins and Einarsson (1965), Cox and others (1966), Hopkins and others (1969), Marlow and others (1976), and Hopkins and Silberman (1978). Quaternary basalt (Table 1) (Cox and others, 1966; Hopkins, 1976; Simpson and others, 1979) is extruded onto the structurally high Pribilof Ridge (Marlow and others, 1976) which consists of rocks as old as late Jurassic (Vallier and others, 1979). Barth (1956) recognized the structural implication of alkalic volcanism in back-arc environments. We plan to interpret alkalic volcanism in the Pribilof Islands within the context of recent tectonic and petrologic findings in the southern Bering Sea.</p><p>Funds for this project were provided jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and Bureau of Land Management. Many dunes are roughly V-shaped, built by northwest winds, especially on the east sides of some of the large rivers. On the uplands, the form and spacing of the dunes are variable. A surficial blanket composed mainly of medium and fine-grained sand-the Parsonsburg Sand-forms both the ancient dunes and the broad plains between the dunes. The sand that forms the dunes is massive and intensely burrowed in the upper part; traces of horizontal or slightly inclined bedding appear near the base. Quartz is the dominant mineral constituent of the sand. Microline is abundant in the very fine to fine sand fraction. The heavy-mineral assemblages (high zircon, tourmaline, rutile) are more mature than in most of the possible source rocks. The most abundant minerals in the clay-sized fraction are dioctahedral vermiculite, kaolinite, illite, montmorillonite, and gibbsite. The first four minerals are common in deposits of late Wisconsin and Holocene age. The gibbsite may be detrital, coming from weathered rocks of Tertiary age. The soil profile in the dune sand is weakly to moderately developed. At or near the base of the Parsonsburg Sand are peaty beds that range in age from about 30,000 to about 13,000 radiocarbon years B.P. Microfloral assemblages in the peaty beds suggest that the dunes on the uplands formed in a spruce parkland during the late Wisconsin glacial maximum. The river dunes may also be of late Wisconsin age, but could be Holocene.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Thorium averages 36.2 parts per million (ppm) Th (0.0041 percent Th0<sub>2</sub>) in the carbonatite, which also contains considerably more Ba, Ce, Nd, La, Nb, P, Mn, Mo, Sr, U, and rare-earth elements than average igneous rocks. Thorium content of the carbonatite ranges from 6 ppm Th (0.0007 percent Th0<sub>2</sub>) 150 ppm Th (0.017 percent Th0<sub>2</sub>), and several areas of anomalous concentration are apparent. The distribution of thorium is not the same as the distribution of niobium and rare-earth elements. Thorium abundances of the level found in the carbonatite at Iron Hill are of little economic interest unless considered as a byproduct of potential niobium, rare-earth, and uranium Eighty-three stream sites were selected for sampling in Eagle, Grand, Jackson, Pitkin, Routt, and Summit Counties. Also included are data from 28 sites in Routt County collected for a U.S. Geological Survey cooperative study on the Yampa River basin. A summary of data collected prior to this study, results of current chemical and biological sampling, and needs for future water-quality monitoring are reported for each county.</p><p>The kinds of data collected were site specific depending upon land-use activities. Data collected at selected sites included temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, and stream discharge. Chemical data collected included nutrients, inorganics, organics, and trace elements. Biological data collected included counts and species composition of total and fecal-coliform bacteria, fecal-streptococcus bacteria, benthic invertebrates, and phytoplankton. Most of the sites were sampled three times: in April-June 1976, August 1976, and January 1977.</p><p>The major water-quality problems at the 17 sites sampled in Eagle County are related to mining, recreation, and geology. The Eagle River and Cross Creek in the vicinity of Minturn have concentrations of trace elements that exceed water-quality standards. Gore Creek is influenced by winter recreational use and the water during the winter has total bacteria counts as great as 72,000 per 100 milliliters and concentrations of un-ionized ammonia greater than 0.02 milligrams per liter downstream from the sewage-treatment plant. Mineralized water in the downstream reaches of the Eagle River results from natural chemical processes. The water-quality problems in Grand County, especially on the Fraser River, are related to recreation and urban activities. This greenschist terrane is bordered on the east and west by rocks belonging to the amphibolite metamorphic facies that structurally overlie and are thrust over the Condrey Mountain Schist. The amphibolite facies is succeeded upward by metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks belonging to the greenschist metamorphic facies. \r\n\r\nThe Condrey Mountain Schist is composed predominantly of quartz-muscovite schist and lesser amounts of actinolite-chlorite schist formed by the metamorphism of graywacke and spilitic volcanic rocks that may have belonged to the Galice Formation of Late Jurassic age. Potassium-argon age determinations of 141?4 m.y. and 155?5 m.y. obtained on these metamorphic rocks seem to be incompatible with the Late Jurassic age usually assigned the Galice. \r\n\r\nThe rocks that border the amphibolite facies are part of an extensive terrane of metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks belonging to the western Paleozoic and Triassic belt. The metavolcanic rocks include some unmetamorphosed spilite but are mostly of the greenschist metamorphic facies composed of oligoclase (An15-20) and actinolite with subordinate amounts of chlorite and clinozoisiteepidote. The interbedded sedimentary rocks are predominantly argillite and slaty argillite, less commonly siliceous argillite and chert, and a few lenticular beds of marble. On the south, high-angle faults and a tabular granitic pluton separate the greenschist metavolcanic terrane from the amphibolite facies rocks; on the east, nonfoliated amphibolite is succeeded upward, apparently conformably, by metasedimentary rocks belonging to the greenschist metavolcanic terrane. \r\n\r\nIn the southern part of Condrey Mountain quadrangle, an outlier of a thrust plate composed of the Stuart Fork Formation overlies the metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. The Stuart Fork in this region is composed of siliceous phyllite and phyllitic quartzite and is believed to be the metamorphosed equivalent of rocks over which it is thrust. In the Yreka-Fort Jones area, potassium-argon determinations on mica from the blueschist facies in the Stuart Fork gave ages of approximately 220 m.y. (Late Triassic) for the age of metamorphism. \r\n\r\nRocks of the amphibolite facies structurally overlie the Condrey Mountain Schist along a moderate to steeply dipping thrust fault. The amphibolite terrane is composed of amphibolite and metasedimentary rocks in approximately equal amounts accompanied by many bodies of serpentinite and a number of gabbro and dioritic plutons. Most of the amphibolite is foliated, but some is nonfoliated; the nonfoliated amphibolite has an amphibolite mineralogy and commonly a relict volcanic rock texture. The nonfoliated amphibolite occurs on the southern and eastern borders of the amphibolite terrane between the areas offoliated amphibolite and the overly ing metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. Hornblende and plagioclase (An30-35) are the characteristic minerals, indicating that the rocks are of the almandine-amphibolite metamorphic facies. The metasedimentary rocks interbedded with the amphibolites include siliceous schist and phyllite, minor quartzite, and subordinate amounts of marble. Potassium-argon age dates obtained on hornblende from foliated amphibolite yield ages of 146?4 and 148? 4 m.y., suggesting a Late Jurassic metamorphic episode. \r\n\r\nMafic and ultramafic rocks are widespread in the amphibolite terrane but are almost entirely absent from the area of greenschist facies metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. The ultramafic rocks, predominantly serpentinite, occur as a few large bodies and many small tabular concordant bodies interleaved with the foliated rocks. Located near the Pribilof Islands, and beneath the virtually featureless Bering Sea shelf, the basin is filled with more than 10 km of sedimentary deposits. These sedimentary rocks are ruptured by normal faults associated with the sides of the graben; these ruptures commonly correlate with offsets in the basement surface. Offset along these faults increases with depth implying that they are growth-type structures. Basement rocks, that floor and flank St. George basin are part of an assemblage of Mesozoic eugeosynclinal rocks that extends from southern Alaska to eastern Siberia beneath the Bering Sea margin and outer shelf. A parallel belt of igneous rocks of late Mesozoic and earliest Tertiary age may also extend from western Alaska to northeastern Siberia beneath the inner Bering Sea shelf.</p><p>The Bering Sea margin and adjacent shelf were apparently uplifted by the end of Mesozoic time, resulting in deep subaerial erosion• Following uplift, the outer Bering Sea shelf has undergone extensional rifting and regional subsidence. Differential subsidence has resulted in the formation of a series of basement ridges and basins whose axes parallel the Bering Sea margin. Some of these basins are very large to gigantic in size, e.g., St. George basin, and involve crustal subsidence exceeding 10 km. Such large scale crustal collapse suggests deep crustal or upper mantle processes, such as thermal metamorphism or stress-induced crustal migration.</p><p>Nine wells drilled along the northern coast of the Alaska Peninsula, as well as several onshore Soviet wells in northeastern Siberia, relate directly to the submerged basins of the Bering Sea shelf. Although all of the wells on the Alaska Peninsula were abandoned as dry holes, shows of oil and gas were found. In addition, Soviet drilling resulted in the discovery of oil and gas<br>shows in Oligocene and Miocene sandstone.</p><p>Regional geologic and geophysical mapping suggests that there are suitable source beds, reservoir rocks, and traps within St. George basin. However, it is not known if hydrocarbons are present or if the possible reservoirs are of commercial size. A resource appraisal of St. George basin out to 200 meters water depth indicates that, at 5 percent probability, 6.4 billion barrels of oil and 18.6 trillion cubic feet of gas may be in the basin; at 95 percent probability 0.8 billion barrels of oil and 4.5 trillion cubic feet of gas may be in the basin. The statistical mean of the appraisal is 2.7 billion barrels of oil and 10.3 trillion cubic feet of gas.</p><p>A large number of faults, evidence for recent movement along some of the faults, and high seismicity all indicate that faulting is a major environmental concern for the outer continental shelf region of the southern Bering Sea, especially in St. George basin. Most of the faults are potentially active and their movement is probably influenced by the local geology, including basement structures and sediment loading. Unstable sediment masses pose potential threats to resource development in the vicinity of the Pribilof Canyon. Volcanic activity along the Aleutian arc south of St. George basin may also pose an environmental hazard to petroleum development in the area. The shallow-water region is discussed in detail by Marlow and others (1979a) in a companion report. The triangular deep-water region lies at the junction of the Bering shelf and the Aleutian Ridge (Fig. 2). This region is bounded on the northeast by the 200 m bathymetric contour that defines the edge of the Bering shelf, on the southeast by a meandering line that lies 3 miles north of the Aleutian Islands, and on the west by the 171°W longitude meridian. Hereafter, this triangular region is referred to as the Umnak Plateau region.
