At nine of the streams, the floods during the spring of 1983 equaled or exceeded the 100-year flood. The peak discharge at Stone Creek was 40 times the maximum previously known flood, and the peak discharges at the other sites ranged from slightly greater to about five times that previously known. In addition to the outstanding peak discharges, streamflow at the 11 sites commonly remains high for days, weeks, or even a month.</p><p>The floods resulted from retention of an abnormally large snowpack until rain combined with above normal temperature caused rapid melting. The geochemical results should be evaluated in context with geological and geophysical results. Possible types of mineralization, as judged from occurrences in nearby areas where the rocks are similar to those in the study area, include strata-bound copper-silver occurrences in rocks of the Ravalli Group, specifically the Burke and Revett Formations; the less probable lead-zinc massive sulfide deposits of the Sullivan-type in the pre-Ravalli (middle Prichard Formation); potential metal-enriched, sulfide vein systems; and gold-bearing veins or placer occurrences.</p>\n<p>All samples collected for this study are plotted on the map. Element symbols shown at sample sites indicate an anomalous concentration for that element at the site. Tables 1&ndash;3 list the values of selected elements determined to be critical for a mineral evaluation of this particular geologic setting. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are exposed along the east border of the Jerry Peak Wilderness Study Area and in two small areas farther west in the Jerry Peak and Jerry Peak West Wilderness Study Areas. All the rocks locally are intricately faulted. No veins or pervasive hydrothermal alteration are associated with these faults.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston,
