Ground water is present in San Juan County in several bedrock formations and in the alluvium of the river valleys. This report describes the hydrologic data that have been collected in San Juan County, presents examples of the data, shows the locations of the data-collection sites, and indicates where more complete records may be obtained. This data base should be helpful in assessing the quantity, quality, and availability of the county 's water resources. Information collected at 1,877 water wells, 39 streamflow-gaging stations, and 172 springs is presented. The collection sites and geology are shown on a base map with a scale of 1 inch = 2 miles. Water-level data for 1977-81 show that there has been no significant change in water levels, indicating that during this period, recharge in the Merced area balance natural discharge and withdrawals by pumping. Lithologic logs of shallow test wells drilled around Merced indicate shallow fine-grained material in the aquifer that could interfere with surface artificial recharge to the aquifer system. Short-term and seasonal fluctuations of water levels in wells perforated at different depths and in different aquifers show dissimilar patterns in some areas. The expansion and refinement of the observation-well network will provide a data base for water-management decisions and for assessments of ground-water conditions in the future. The availability of data for inorganic, trace, and organic constituents for each grouping of units was assessed. Median dissolved-solids concentrations for the groupings of units range from about 100 to 5,000 milligrams per liter. However, the number and distribution of data sites for some groupings of units wee inadequate to be representative of the aquifer as a whole. Concentrations of most trace constituents do not exceed Federal primary drinking-water standards, although exceptions occur. Few data were available for organic constituents. The area is underlain by three Precambrian volcanosedimentary units and a range of Precambrian dioritoid and granitoid plutonic intrusive rocks. Paleozoic(?) sandstone crops out in small areas in the northwestern part of the quadrangle, and a lobe of QuaternaryC?) basalt from Harrat Ithnain penetrates the southwest corner of the quadrangle.
\n
The Banana greenstone, the oldest unit in the quadrangle, is composed of basic to intermediate volcanic and subvolcanic rocks and minor interbedded marble that have been metamorphosed to greenschist-facies assemblages. The volcanic rocks range from basalt to andesite and dacite, and the subvolcanic rocks are diabase and diorite.
\n
Two less-metamorphosed Precambrian units, the Hadn formation and the Zarghat formation, unconformably overlie the Banana greenstone. The Hadn formation is composed of predominantly rhyolitic to dacitic volcanic rock and minor amounts of continental sedimentary rock; it is exposed only in the east half of the quadrangle. The Zarghat formation is also rhyolitic to dacitic volcanic rock but contains much more sedimentary rock that appears to have been deposited in a shallow-marine environment. The relation between these two formations is not clear at this time.
\n
Two groups of intrusive rocks are recognized on the basis of their ages relative to the Hadn and Zarghat formations. An older group is composed of hornblende quartz diorite, granodiorite, tonalite, and lesser amounts of granite. Tnese rocks intrude the Banana greenstone but predate the Hadn and Zarghat formations. Post-Hadn/Zarghat intrusive rocks are voluminous undivided granite, several varieties of alkali-feldspar granite, monzogranite, granophyre, hypabyssal rhyolite, aplite, diabase, and gabbro.
\n
The structural grain within the quadrangle appears to trend north-south. The Precambrian volcanosedimentary rocks and older plutonic rocks define three major north-trending lithologic belts. The Zarghat formation makes up the westernmost belt, and the Hadn formation comprises the easternmost belt. The central belt consists of Banana greenstone and older plutonic rocks. The north-south structural grain is crosscut by large plutons that postdate the Hadn and Zarghat formations. The dominant faults in the area belong to a northeast-trending system of shears; less common fault orientations are northwesterly, northerly, and east-westerly.
\n
Outcrops of magnesite in the southwest corner of the quadrangle constitute the only known economic potential in the area.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr84794","usgsCitation":"Quick, J.E., 1984, Reconnaissance geology of the Zarghat Quadrangle, sheet 26/40 B, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-794, ii, 40 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr84794.","productDescription":"ii, 40 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143384,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0794/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38567,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0794/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38568,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0794/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38569,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0794/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 40,\n 26\n ],\n [\n 40,\n 27\n ],\n [\n 41,\n 27\n ],\n [\n 41,\n 26\n ],\n [\n 40,\n 26\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6de4b07f02db63ed9d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Quick, J. Presently, 145 continuous surface-water stations are operated in Nebraska on a budget of $908,500. Data uses and funding sources are identified for each of the 145 stations. Data from most stations have multiple uses. All stations have sufficient justification for continuation, but two stations primarily are used in short-term research studies; their continued operation needs to be evaluated when the research studies end. The present measurement frequency produces an average standard error for instantaneous discharges of about 12 percent, including periods when stage data are missing. Altering the travel routes and the measurement frequency will allow a reduction in standard error of about 1 percent with the present budget. Standard error could be reduced to about 8 percent if lost record could be eliminated. A minimum budget of $822,000 is required to operate the present network, but operations at that funding level would result in an increase in standard error to about 16 percent. The maximum budget analyzed was $1,363,000, which would result in an average standard error of 6 percent.
