In general, the effects of exploration on erosion are minor, although erosion may be accelerated by the building of access roads, by activities at the drilling sites, and by close concentration of drilling sites. Areas where the greatest effects on erosion and sedimentation from mining and milling operations have occurred are: (1) in the immediate vicinity of mines and mills, (2) near waste piles, and (3) in stream channels where modifications, such as changes in depth have been caused by discharge of excess mine and mill water. Collapse of tailings piles could result in localized but excessive erosion and sedimentation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791496","usgsCitation":"Cooley, M.E., 1979, Effects of uranium development on erosion and associated sedimentation in southern San Juan Basin, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1496, iii, 25 p. :map, photos. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791496.","productDescription":"iii, 25 p. :map, photos. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141504,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1496/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35991,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1496/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a27e4b07f02db60ff5f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cooley, Maurice E.","contributorId":8077,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cooley","given":"Maurice","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157682,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is an area long used for outdoor recreation and includes a part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Water resources in the county are derived from precipitation. The Lehigh and Delaware Rivers, bordering the northwestern and southeastern parts, respectively, are the drains for surface-water and ground-water discharge and are essentially unused for water supply.

Water budgets were calculated for average conditions when annual precipitation is 45 in. Sixty percent of this or 27 in. runs off and 65 percent of that runoff or 17 in. moves through the ground-water reservoir. Evapotranspiration varies little between wet and dry years and averages 18 in.

Bedrock consists of Silurian and Devonian sedimentary rocks, which are intensely deformed by folding in the southeastern third of the county and are moderately deformed in the remainder. During the Pleistocene Epoch, glaciers repeatedly advanced across most of the county. The last of these advances deposited a terminal moraine that extends across the southwestern part of the county. The glaciers eroded pre-existing deposits, veneered the upland, and filled valleys with unconsolidated deposits that changed surface-water drainage and altered ground-water gradients.

Water occurs in fractures and solution openings in the consolidated rocks and in intergranular openings in the unconsolidated rocks and weathered calcareous sandstones. Water that reaches the water table moves down the hydraulic gradient to points of discharge, moving both laterally and vertically away from ground-water divides and toward streams. The thickness of the fresh-water system is 800 ft or more, but little water is yielded to wells by aquifers more than 500 ft below land surface. Ground-water recharge is 600 to 650 (gal/min)/mi2; and about 1.6 billion gallons per square mile is stored in the ground-water reservoir.

Currently the most productive wells are in consolidated-rock aquifers; however, specific-capacity data suggest that wells in the unconsolidated deposits have potentially larger yields. Well yield is affected primarily by the distribution, size, and interconnection of the water-bearing openings and by topographic location, available recharge, well-depth, location within the flow system, pumping rate and duration of pumping, and interference from other pumping wells. Potential yields of properly located, drilled, and developed wells have been calculated for the aquifers. The median yields calculated from specific capacity data from the unconsolidated deposits, are 200 gal/min; from the Bloomsburg Formation, 100 gal/min; and from the Poplar Gap Member of the Catskill Formation, 70 gal/min. Median yields of the other units range from 15 to 40 gal/min. In general, enough water for domestic use can be obtained throughout the county. Large-scale development and consumptive use of the ground water will diminish baseflow of the streams.

The temperature of water measured in wells ranges from 44° to 57°F and is largely dependent on altitude of the land surface and depth to the producing zone. Hardness of water in the noncarbonate rocks averages 3 to 4 grains per gallon, or about half that of the carbonate rocks. Water from most of the bedrock aquifers is low in dissolved solids, acidic, and soft. In carbonate rocks, the water tends to be hard and slightly alkaline. Excessive amounts of iron and manganese are encountered in water from the unconsolidated deposits and, locally, from the Catskill and Shawangunk Formations.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79414","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Topographic and Geologic Survey, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources","usgsCitation":"Carswell, L.D., and Lloyd, O.B., 1979, Ground-water resources of Monroe County, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-414, Report: 100 p.; 2 Plates: 53.19 x 41.58 inches and 56.43 x 41.52 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79414.","productDescription":"Report: 100 p.; 2 Plates: 53.19 x 41.58 inches and 56.43 x 41.52 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":353263,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0414/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":353264,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0414/figure-2.pdf","text":"Figure 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":353265,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0414/figure-3.pdf","text":"Figure 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141330,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0414/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"48000","country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","county":"Monroe County","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -75.75,\n 40.75\n ],\n [\n -74.9,\n 40.75\n ],\n [\n -74.9,\n 41.3\n ],\n [\n -75.75,\n 41.3\n ],\n [\n -75.75,\n 40.75\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d6ad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carswell, Louis D.","contributorId":17259,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carswell","given":"Louis","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157368,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lloyd, Orville B. Equations relating flood magnitude to basin characteristics were developed for exceedance probabilities of 0.5 to 0.01 (2- to 100-year recurrence intervals). Separate equations are presented for four regions: Coast, Willamette, Rogue-Umpqua, and High Cascades. Also presented are values of flood discharges for selected exceedance probabilities and of basin characteristics for all gaging stations used in the analysis. Included are data for 230 stations in Oregon, 6 stations in southwestern Washington, and 3 stations in northwestern California. Drainage areas used in the analysis range from 0.21 to 7,280 square miles. Also included are maximum discharges for all western Oregon stations used in the analysis. The complex is about 10 km in diameter and consists of three principal units: an outer syenite ring, an intermediate diorite-gabbro zone, and a central pyroxenite-hornblendite core. The principal mineralization zone is in the ultramafic core of the complex. \r\n\r\nThe titanium is mainly in titaniferous magnetite, but some is in ilmenite intergrown with magnetite and in the titanium-bearing hornblende, kaersutite. The titaniferous magnetite is in concordant lenses and veinlets and is disseminated throughout the host rock. The lenses and veins range from a few centimeters to 3 m in width and are as much as 50 m long. The layered disseminated bodies contain as much as 25 percent magnetite. \r\n\r\nExploratory drilling showed that an area 500 by 1000 m contains titaniferous rock averaging about 6.2 percent TiO2. This mineralized zone contains about 175,000,000 tons per 100 m depth. Material of this grade is not commercial at this time, but may be a future resource. Other deposits mapped, but virtually nonwater yielding, are the older (dissected) alluvial-fan, pediment, and terrace deposits. Terraces are capped by gravel and form levels at 30-40, 45-100, 120-150, 200-260, and 280-330 feet above the Nowood River. The thickness of the alluvial aquifer indicated from the sparse well-log data and 42 surface resistivity measurements is between 25 and 50 feet along the Nowood River and more than 60 feet along Tensleep and Paint Rock Creeks. The resistivity measurements indicate a buried bedrock ridge below the boulder-fan gravel between Paint Rock and Medicine Lodge Creeks and a buried channel filled by alluvium along Tensleep Creek. Well yields from the alluvial aquifer are estimated to be low. The most favorable areas for ground-water development are from the flood-plain alluvium along Tensleep Creek and from the boulder-fan gravel and adjoining flood-plain alluvium along Paint Rock and Medicine Creeks. Along the Nowood River the flood-plain alluvium, although its yields are small, has the best potential for ground-water development. The amount of water withdrawn from the aquifer increased from about 13,800 acre-feet in 1960 to 38,400 acre-feet in 1972. As industrial and agricultural development continues, the amount of withdrawal probably will increase greatly.

Aquifer tests indicate that the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer ranges from 8 to 40 feet per day; however, a flow-net analysis indicates that the hydraulic conductivity may be as much as 80 feet per day in the north-central part of the area. In the southern and central parts of the area the aquifer is unconfined, and the storage coefficient is estimated to be about 0.15. In the northern and eastern parts the aquifer is confined, and the storage coefficient ranges from 0.00013 to 0.0014.

A mathematical model was developed to simulate the groundwater system and to provide a management tool for estimating the effects of present and future ground-water withdrawals. The model indicates that the inflow to and outflow from the aquifer were about 105,600 acre-feet in 1960 prior to extensive ground-water development and that about 192,000 acre-feet of water was derived from groundwater storage between 1960 and 1972. In order to aid in the understanding and management of the ground-water basin, a digital ground-water model was constructed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Since the original development of this model, conditions in the basin, including areal distribution and rates of ground-water pumpage, have changed. The results of simulation for the period 1969-76 constitute a second verification of the original model. Calculated heads for 1976 agree with the observed heads, indicating a good calibration of the original model. A predictive simulation for the period 1977-2020 used pumpage values increasing from about 15,500 acre-feet per year to about 26,000 acre-feet per year. The pumpage used in this report reflects a slightly slower growth rate and a more concentrated pattern of development than that investigated when the model was originally developed. The effects of this pattern of pumpage are reflected in the water levels simulated by the model. Predicted drawdowns for 1983 are less extensive but locally more severe than those predicted earlier. The reversal of the hydraulic gradient between China Lake playa and the city of Ridgecrest, as produced by these drawdowns by the year 2020, suggests that the water-quality effects of such drawdowns should be investigated, as this could result in inferior water from the China Lake playa area flowing southward into areas of withdrawal. The water analyses included the common anions and cations, oxygen-18, deuterium, and several minor elements. Actual temperatures of the sampled thermal waters ranged from 23° to 49°C. Estimated aquifer temperatures, as derived from geochemical thermometers, ranged from 45° to 145°C based on silica concentrations and 45° to 205°C based on sodium-potassium-calcium ratios. Using the cation thermometer, two analyses indicated aquifer temperatures that were lower than the actual measured temperatures. Estimated temperatures using a mixing-model method ranged from 205° to 320°C, the higher temperature being of questionable value. The different methods used to estimate aquifer temperatures showed little correlation. Results of these analyses suggest two separate genetic oil types. The first type, the Simpson-Umiat oil type, occurs in reservoir rocks of Cretaceous and Quaternary age and includes oils from seeps in the Skull Cliff, Cape Simpson, Manning Point, and Ungoon Point areas; the Wolf Creek test well 3, and the Umiat oil field. These are higher gravity, low-sulfur oils with no, or slight, odd-numbered n-alkane predominance and pristane to phytane ratios greater than 1.5. The second type, the Barrow-Prudhoe oil type, occurs in reservoir rocks of Carboniferous to Cretaceous age and includes oils from South Barrow gas field, Prudhoe Bay oil field, and the Fish Creek test well 1. Physical properties of Barrow-Prudhoe oils are variable, but in general the oils are medium-gravity, high-sulfur oils with a slight even-numbered n-alkane predominance and pristane to phytane ratios of less than 1.5. The two types are believed to originate from different source rocks; the Barrow-Prudhoe type may have originated from a carbonate or other iron-deficient source rock, and the Simpson-Umiat type from a siliciclastic source rock. Occurrences of the two oil types, when outlined on a map, indicate at least two exploration fairways. The fairway for the Barrow-Prudhoe type is along the Barrow arch, and the fairway for the Simpson-Umiat type is the area of the best reservoir development for the Nanushuk Group.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791649","usgsCitation":"Magoon, L.B., and Claypool, G.E., 1979, Two oil types on the North Slope of Alaska: implications for future exploration: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1649, 13 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791649.","productDescription":"13 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":420193,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1649/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143479,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1649/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"North Slope","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -44.26437145587704,\n              -17.892934656589816\n            ],\n            [\n              -44.26437145587704,\n              -19.132095555888\n            ],\n            [\n              -42.65007384041027,\n              -19.132095555888\n            ],\n            [\n              -42.65007384041027,\n              -17.892934656589816\n            ],\n            [\n              -44.26437145587704,\n              -17.892934656589816\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -170.4186309255835,\n              71.2434612382597\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.4186309255835,\n              68.56040199188811\n            ],\n            [\n              -141.06065965042941,\n              68.56040199188811\n            ],\n            [\n              -141.06065965042941,\n              71.2434612382597\n            ],\n            [\n              -170.4186309255835,\n              71.2434612382597\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a48e4b07f02db62399c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Magoon, Leslie B. lmagoon@usgs.gov","contributorId":2383,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Magoon","given":"Leslie","email":"lmagoon@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":160891,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Claypool, George Edwin","contributorId":99972,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Claypool","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"Edwin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160892,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Flow in this reach of the Chattahoochee is continuous but highly regulated by Buford Dam, a flood-control and hydroelectric facility located near Buford, Ga. Calibration and verification utilized two sets of data collected under highly unsteady discharge conditions. Existing solution techniques, with certain minor improvements, were applied to verify the existing technology of flow and transport modeling. A linear, implicit finite-difference flow model was coupled with implicit, finite-difference transport and temperature models. Both the conservative and nonconservative forms of the transport equation were solved, and the difference in the predicted concentrations of dye were found to be insignificant. The temperature model, therefore, was based on the simpler nonconservative form of the transport equation.
