Each individual gaging station in the network is evaluated on the basis of selected rating factors. The factors relate to the need for information at the gaging stations, accuracy of data, economic aspects of operation, and usefulness of data as a basis for estimates at ungaged sites. The total score for the various factors provides a convenient basis for comparing relative importance of individual gaging stations. The rating-factor method is both flexible and definitive, but the point values that are assigned for each rating factor are somewhat subjective. A table of the point values and guidelines for assigning those values is presented. The climate is arid; few perennial streams are present in the region. Flash floods occasionally occur. The site is underlain by at least 1,800 meters of volcanic tuffs of Tertiary age; limestones and dolomites of Paleozoic age underlie much of the surrounding region, and, together with alluvial deposits, comprise the major aquifers. Yucca Mountain is in the Alkali Flat-Furnace Creek Ranch ground-water subbasin, which is part of the Death Valley ground-water basin. Discharge occurs at Alkali Flat almost entirely by evapotranspiration, and at Furnace Creek Ranch from small springs and seeps. Beneath Yucca Mountain, depth to water ranges from about 460 to 700 meters; the rock under consideration for construction of the repository is in the unsaturated zone. Rate of recharge at Yucca Mountain is small, perhaps much less than 5 millimeters per year. Within the saturated zone, water movement is principally along fractures. The hydraulic gradient is small east (downgradient) of Yucca Mountain, and increases to the north and west. These models will enable water-resources managers to evaluate efficiently the effect of present and future water-resources developments on streamflows at six locations along the West Branch Susquehanna River. The models utilize a unit-response, convolution technique of flowrouting based on diffusion analogy and multilinearization. Estimates of streamflow from the intervening areas of each reach, wave celerity, and wave-dispersion coefficients are the model parameters. These were adjusted until simulated outflow hydrographs and flow statistics adequately approximated those for observed flow data. The overall accuracy of the models is considered good. Average, absolute, daily flow errors between observed and simulated flows ranged from 8.82 to 13.70 percent for the periods that were evaluated. Volume errors for the same periods were between -0.01 and 1.61 percent. Drainage areas, using the latest available 1:24,000 scale topographic maps, are re-computed for data-collection sites and computed for the first time for streams draining greater than 3 square miles. Basin characteristics representing 14 commonly used indices to estimate various streamflows are presented for the five gaged streams in the Hoosic River basin. Streamflow characteristics, representing statistics computed using a new data base with records through 1979, include annual and monthly flow statistics , duration of daily flow values, and the annual 7-day mean low flow at the 2-year and 10-year recurrence intervals. Seven-day low-flow statistics are presented for 21 partial-record sites. The procedures used to determine the hydrologic characteristics are summarized. Models of crustal structure that satisfy the limited available seismic-refraction data and explain the gravity high over the gneiss terrane permit the hypothesis that the core metamorphic complexes are the surface expression of a zone of dense infrastructure that makes up the upper 20 km (kilometers) of the crust within the crystalline belt. \r\n\r\nThe Omineca crystalline belt is characterized regionally by low aeromagnetic relief. The gneiss domes and biotite- and biotite-muscovite granites are generally marked by low magnetic relief, whereas hornblende-biotite granites often cause magnetic highs. Exceptional magnetic highs mark zones of magnetic rock within the biotite- and biotite-muscovite granites and the gneiss domes; these areas are worthy of study, both to determine the origin and disposition of the magnetite and to explore the possible existence of uraniferous magnetite deposits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/pp1260","usgsCitation":"Cady, J.W., and Fox, K., 1984, Geophysical interpretation of the gneiss terrane of northern Washington and southern British Columbia, and its implications for uranium exploration: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1260, 29 p.;  1 plate in pocket, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1260.","productDescription":"29 p.;  1 plate in pocket","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":104586,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4774.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"4774"},{"id":125043,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1260/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":32494,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1260/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":32495,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1260/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c147","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cady, John W.","contributorId":104462,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cady","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151614,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fox, Kenneth F.","contributorId":29804,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fox","given":"Kenneth F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151613,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Babelthuap is the second largest island in the Western Pacific and comprises more than 80 percent of the total land area of the Palau Islands. Most of the islands are uninhabited limestone ridges covered with dense vegetation. These islands have no freshwater resources and are not included in this report. The island of Koror with an area of 3.6 square miles is the administrative, commercial, and population center of Palau and has an annual average rainfall of 148 inches. Short-term rainfall records at other locations in the islands indicate little variation in annual rainfall throughout the Palau Islands. Runoff-to-rainfall ratios for streams on Babelthuap show that about 70 percent of the rain falling on the island runs off to the ocean. The uniformity of rainfall and basin characteristics is shown by the excellent correlation between mean annual rainfall on Koror and streamflow on Babelthuap and by the close correlations between discharge at gaging stations and partial-record sites. Surface water quality is generally very good as shown by 55 chemical analyses of water from 18 sources. The dissolved solids concentration of water samples did not exceed 66 milligrams per liter. The program also was used to show that the August 1978 and October 1981 floods on the Brazos River greatly decreased the volume-weighted-average concentrations of selected constituents in Hubbard Creek Reservoir and Possum Kingdom Lake.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri834287","usgsCitation":"Wells, F.C., and Schertz, T.L., 1984, Computation and use of volume-weighted-average concentrations to determine long-term variations of selected water-quality constituents in lakes and reservoirs: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4287, v, 8 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834287.","productDescription":"v, 8 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":59217,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4287/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":121866,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4287/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b19e4b07f02db6a7f10","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wells, Frank C.","contributorId":80664,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wells","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203252,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schertz, Terry L. tschertz@usgs.gov","contributorId":188,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schertz","given":"Terry","email":"tschertz@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":203253,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
