Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many prospects and claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, many of those in Condon, 1965 (1-453) and some in MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (OF-77-169A), p. 15). Many dunes are roughly V-shaped, built by northwest winds, especially on the east sides of some of the large rivers. On the uplands, the form and spacing of the dunes are variable. A surficial blanket composed mainly of medium and fine-grained sand-the Parsonsburg Sand-forms both the ancient dunes and the broad plains between the dunes. The sand that forms the dunes is massive and intensely burrowed in the upper part; traces of horizontal or slightly inclined bedding appear near the base. Quartz is the dominant mineral constituent of the sand. Microline is abundant in the very fine to fine sand fraction. The heavy-mineral assemblages (high zircon, tourmaline, rutile) are more mature than in most of the possible source rocks. The most abundant minerals in the clay-sized fraction are dioctahedral vermiculite, kaolinite, illite, montmorillonite, and gibbsite. The first four minerals are common in deposits of late Wisconsin and Holocene age. The gibbsite may be detrital, coming from weathered rocks of Tertiary age. The soil profile in the dune sand is weakly to moderately developed. At or near the base of the Parsonsburg Sand are peaty beds that range in age from about 30,000 to about 13,000 radiocarbon years B.P. Microfloral assemblages in the peaty beds suggest that the dunes on the uplands formed in a spruce parkland during the late Wisconsin glacial maximum. The river dunes may also be of late Wisconsin age, but could be Holocene.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Part II of the paper provides a summary of the Mississippian System, presents interregional interpretations permitted by this study, and includes sections on notable features of the system. The maps contained in the separate case as part III may be divided into two groups: (1) a sequence of factual or basic maps that shows, with a minimum of interpretation, the Mississippian System as it occurs today, and (2) interpretive maps that attempt a reasonable reconstruction of the original extent of the system, its tectonics, environment, and One of the methods in which the use of highly variable streamflow in the area can be evaluated is with the aid of multiyear low-flow frequency information. Data from 19 stream-gaging stations in the study area and a base period of 1940-77 were used to develop maps from which discharge values for the 2- and 50-year recurrence interval for durations of 12, 24, 36, and 60 months can be obtained for ungaged sites that have drainage areas of less than 1,000 square miles. Discharge values for intervening recurrence intervals can be obtained by interpolation. Most samples were collected from mineral-rich springs probably related to hydrothermal systems of various ages. Two sets of data were obtained, the first based on the chemical composition and physical and chemical properties of spring and ground water, and the second based on the chemical composition of mineral precipitates deposited by radioactive springs. Multivariate statistical analysis of the water data suggests four major geochemical factors affecting the 23 parameters measured. These factors were labeled as total dissolved solids, alkalinity, temperature, and Fe-U concentration. Multivariate statistical analysis of the precipitate data suggests five factors affecting the 32 element values measured. These factors were labeled as mineral contamination, Mn precipitation, Fe-As-Be precipitation, heavy metals precipitation, and Ba-Ra precipitation. \r\n\r\nRelative intensities of the geochemical processes represented by the factors were computed using factor scores. Sample localities were ranked on the basis of relative intensities, and the five localities with the highest intensities were selected as being the most favorable for more intensive exploration for uranium. The thunderstorms can cause floods of large magnitude, but of localized extent. Most streams of the lowlands are ephemeral or intermittent. \r\n\r\nStreams of the high mountain areas are much less variable. Most of their flow is from snowmelt, which results in low-intensity flood peaks with long, gradual recessions. Most large mountain streams are perennial. \r\n\r\nSmall ephemeral lakes and ponds in the low-lying areas have little effect on flood flows. Larger reservoirs in the basin have varying effects on flows of rivers, ranging from complete flow control to minor regulation. \r\n\r\nThe streams of the low-lying areas are high in dissolved solids content. Sodium, bicarbonate, and sulfate are the predominant ions. The quality of the water varies during a single-flow event and season-ally. During the 1968-75 water years, approximately 55 percent of the total sediment was transported in 2 days and 92 percent was transported in 53 days. </span></p><p><span>The </span><span>long-term </span><span>(1928-75) </span><span>average </span><span>annual </span><span>sediment </span><span>discharge </span><span>of </span><span>the </span><span>Santa </span><span>Clara </span><span>River </span><span>at </span><span>Montalvo </span><span>is </span><span>estimated </span><span>at </span><span>3.67 </span><span>million </span><span>tons. </span><span>Of </span><span>that </span><span>quantity, </span><span>2.58 </span><span>million </span><span>tons </span><span>consisted </span><span>of </span><span>fine </span><span>sediment </span><span>and </span><span>1.09 </span><span>million </span><span>tons </span><span>consisted </span><span>of </span><span>coarse </span><span>sediment. </span></p><p><span>A </span><span>sediment </span><span>budget </span><span>for </span><span>the </span><span>Santa </span><span>Clara </span><span>River </span><span>basin </span><span>was </span><span>estimated </span><span>for </span><span>sediment </span><span>discharges </span><span>under </span><span>both </span><span>natural </span><span>and </span><span>actual </span><span>conditions. </span><span>The </span><span>major </span><span>difference </span><span>between </span><span>natural </span><span>and </span><span>actual </span><span>sediment </span><span>discharges </span><span>of </span><span>the </span><span>Santa </span><span>Clara </span><span>River </span><span>basin </span><span>is </span><span>the </span><span>sediment </span><span>intercepted </span><span>upstream </span><span>from </span><span>Lake </span><span>Piru. </span><span>The </span><span>combined </span><span>trap </span><span>efficiency </span><span>of </span><span>Lake </span><span>Piru </span><span>and </span><span>Pyramid </span><span>Lake </span><span>approaches </span><span>100 </span><span>percent. </span><span>Sediment </span><span>deposited </span><span>in </span><span>these </span><span>reservoirs </span><span>resulted </span><span>in </span><span>about </span><span>a </span><span>6-percent </span><span>reduction </span><span>of </span><span>sediment </span><span>to </span><span>the </span><span>Santa </span><span>Clara </span><span>River </span><span>basin </span><span>during </span><span>the </span><span>historical </span><span>period </span><span>(1928-75) </span><span>and </span><span>a </span><span>12-percent </span><span>reduction </span><span>during </span><span>the </span><span>period </span><span>most </span><span>affected </span><span>by </span><span>dams </span><span>(1953-75). </span><span>Sediment </span><span>losses </span><span>to </span><span>the </span><span>basin </span><span>by </span><span>gravel </span><span>mining, </span><span>diversion </span><span>of </span><span>flows, </span><span>and </span><span>interception </span><span>of </span><span>sediment </span><span>in </span><span>the </span><span>Castaic </span><span>Creek </span><span>basin </span><span>resulted </span><span>in </span><span>additional </span><span>reductions </span><span>of </span><span>2 </span><span>percent </span><span>during </span><span>the </span><span>period </span><span>1928-75 </span><span>and </span><span>4 </span><span>percent </span><span>during </span><span>the </span><span>period The calibrated model supported the hypothesis that under natural steady-state conditions, recharge is from precipitation and discharge is through evapotranspiration. This hypothesis was further supported by comparing simulated water levels to observed water levels collected during a 3-year period of irrigation withdrawal.</p>\n<p>Predictions of the effects of continued withdrawal of currently allocated water were made. One prediction using recharge equal to 25 percent of the average annual precipitati on showed that an equilibrium between pumping and recharge would be established within 10 years and water levels would be 2 to 4 feet below 1977 levels . A second prediction included a 2-year drought of one -half the average recharge from precipitation. This prediction also showed equilibrium within 10 years, but water level s would be 3 to 5 feet below 1977 levels . Water in the area is derived from precipitation, which averages 12 inches annually, on three subbasins nearly surrounding the 17-square-mile reservation. No ground water flows in from outside the area. A supply well that taps sandy material overlying the pre-Tertiary basement complex showed a specific capacity of 0.4 gallon per minute per foot of drawdown. Estimates of specific yield for material encountered during drilling of three wells and a test hole ranged from 5 to 10 percent. A gravity survey outlined the thickest section of the aquifer in the Vandeventer Flat area, and test wells are proposed to determine its potential well yield. Damming streams to retain runoff (about 1,500 acre-feet per year, and more during periods of heavy precipitation) is also proposed. Analyses of water from the supply well and five major springs showed that ground water is suitable for irrigation except at Sulphur Spring, where the percent sodium of 97 exceeds recommended maximums, and at Bull Canyon Spring, where the specific conductance of 1,300 micromhos indicate a salinity hazard. The patterned effect of the roughness was obtained by clear-cut mowing of designated areas of an otherwise fairly dense coverage of coastal Bermuda grass approximately 250 mm high. All experiments were conducted in the Flood Plain Simulation Facility during the period of October 7 through December 12, 1974. Data from 18 steady flow experiments and 10 unsteady flow experiments are summarized. Measured data included are ground-surface elevations, grass heights and densities, water-surface elevations and point velocities for all experiments. Additional tables of water-surface elevations and measured point velocities are included for the clear-cut areas for most experiments. One complete set of average water-surface elevations and one complete set of measured point velocities are tabulated for each steady flow experiment. Time series data, on a 2-minute time interval, are tabulated for both water-surface elevations and point velocities for each unsteady flow experiment. All data collected, including individual records of water-surface elevations for the steady flow experiments, have been stored on computer disk storage and can be retrieved using the computer programs listed in the attachment to this report. A digital model calibrated to conditions in Wildcat Creek was used to predict alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows.</p><p>The model indicates that benthic-oxygen demand is the most significant factor affecting the dissolved-oxygen concentrations in Wildcat Creek during summer low flows. The Indiana stream dissolved-oxygen standard should be met if the Kokomo wastewater-treatment facility meets its current National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit restrictions (average monthly 5-day biochemical-oxygen demand of 5 milligrams per liter and maximum weekly 5-day biochemical-oxygen demand of 7.5 milligrams per liter) and benthic-oxygen demand becomes negligible.</p><p>Ammonia-nitrogen toxicity may also be a water-quality limitation in Wildcat Creek. Samples were analyzed for nitrogen and phosphorus species, suspended sediment, organic carbon, and pesticides. Daily mean constituent concentrations and discharges transported from the basin were computed for a gaging station near the mouth. Intermittent constituent mean concentrations and discharges were computed for storms at the six subbasin sites.</p>\n<p>The objective of this project was to assess the magnitudes and types of nonpoint discharges that affect the water quality of Pequea Creek. The project included the determination of (1) the total discharges of suspended sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus from the basin; (2) intermittent storm and base-flow discharges from six subbasin sites of varying size, geology, and land use; (3) the difference in magnitudes of the discharges during base-flow periods and storms; and (4) which variables most affect the transport of these constituents.</p>\n<p>The yields measured from the Pequea Creek basin for the period February to December 1977 were among the highest measured in the lower Susquehanna River basin. Some preliminary relations between constituents were examined using linear regression techniques on all of the data for each site. Direct runoff transported the majority of the suspended sediment, total phosphorus, and suspended organic carbon from the basin; the other constituents were transported mainly during base flow. Despite the aridity of the valley itself, however , very heavy rainfall sometimes occurs in the nearby mountains. Such violent rainstorms are likely to be of relatively short duration and to occur over rather small areas; nevertheless, they sometimes produce large floodflows that in turn cause severe erosion and flows of debris. The debris-laden flows may be hazardous to life and property. Given sufficient knowledge of the hydrologic and hydraulic environment, the degree of hazard can be estimated. Potential hazards are defined for areas in the vicinity of the Furnace Creek fan and the Park Service residential area.
