The Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964) and related acts require the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to survey certain areas on Federal lands to determine their mineral resource potential. Results must be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report presents the results of a survey of mines, quarries, prospects, and coal exposures in the vicinity of the Devils Fork Roadless Area in the Jefferson National Forest, Scott County, Virginia. Devils Fork Roadless Area was classified as a further planning area during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, January 1979.

The Devils Fork Roadless Area is in the Clinch Ranger district of the Jefferson National Forest, southwestern Virginia. It is located in Scott County, about 5 miles southeast of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and is accessible from there via U.W. 23 to Duffield, Virginia, and then northeastward along State Route 653 (fig. 1). Access from the north is provided by State Routes 616, 619, and Forest Route 237. Southern access is provided by State Routes 619 and 649. The interior is accessible by foot along overgrown logging railroad grades and abandoned forest roads on the lower portions of Devil Fork, Straight Fork, and Roddy Branch.

The Devils Fork Roadless Area is located at the eastern edge of the Appalachian coal region and is within the Cumberland Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateau physiographic province. Most of the area is drained by Devil Fork and its tributaries. Clinch Rock Branch of Straight Creek, Roddy Branch of Valley Creek, and Stinking Creek, all tributary to the Clinch River, drain small fringe tracts. Altitudes range from about 1,550 ft on the lower part of Straight Fork to about 3,490 ft at Cox Place on Little Mountain. Vegetation varies from mixed hardwoods in the uplands to thickets of conifer, rhododendron, and laurel in moist protected areas, as in coves along drainage courses.

This report is one in a series resulting from the U.S. Geological Survey's Snake River Plain Rasa (Regional Aquifer System Analysis) study that was initiation in October 1979. 

Purposes of the RASA study were to (1) refine knowledge of the regional ground-water flow system, (2) determine effects of conjunctive use of ground water and surface water, and (3) describe water chemistry. This purpose of this report is to describe flow characteristics of the Snake River and tributaries and to develop a water budget for the Snake River Plain. Data and interpretation in this report will be used in development of ground-water flow models.

As of January 1, 1984, 404 streamflow, 89 reservoir-contents, 32 stage, 10 crest-stage partial-record, 2 periodic discharge through range, 31 flood-hydrograph partial-record, 15 flood-profile partial-record, 41 low-flow partial-record, 11 tide-level, 49 daily chemical-quality, 26 continuous-recording water-quality, 100 periodic biological, 19 lake surveys, 170 periodic organic and (or) nutrient, 3 periodic insecticide, 57 periodic pesticide, 25 automatic sampler, 152 periodic minor elements, 147 periodic chemical-quality y 102 periodic physical-organic, 7 continuous-recording four-parameter water-quality, 3 sediment, 40 periodic sediment, 28 continuous-recording temperature, and 38 national stream-quality accounting network stations were in operation. Plate 1 shows the location of surface-water streamflow or reservoir content and chemical-quality or sediment stations in Texas. Plate 2 shows the location of partial-record surface-water stations.

This index shows the station number -and name, latitude and longitude, type of data collected, and the office principally responsible for the data collection (table 1). An 8-digit permanent numerical designation for gaging stations has been adopted on a nationwide basis; stations are numbered and listed in downstream order. In the downstream direction along the main stem, all stations on a tributary entering above a main-stem station are listed before that station. A tributary entering between two main-stem stations is listed between them. A similar order is followed in listing stations on first rank, second rank, and other ranks of tributaries. To indicate the rank of any tributary on which a gaging station is situated and the stream to which it is an immediate tributary, each indention in the listing of gaging stations represent one rank. This downstream order and system of indention show which gaging stations are on tributaries between any two stations on a main stem and the rank of the tributary on which each gaging station is situated. On plates 1 and 2, the 8-digit station number is abbreviated because of space limitation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Sheep Hole-Cadiz Wilderness Study Area, which encompasses approximately 200,000 acres including enclosed private lands, in south-central San Bernardino County, California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas; geologic, geochemical, and geophysical investigations were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The study area is located in the Mojave Desert 13 miles east of Amboy, California, 20 miles east of Twentynine Palms, California, and 90 miles east of San Bernardino, and encompasses parts of the Dale Lake, Bristol Lake, Cadiz Valley and Cadiz Lake 15-minute quadrangles. Its borders are defined by the Amboy Road and a gas pipeline service road on the northwest, the unimproved Cadiz Valley access road on the east, State Route 62 along the south, and the Iron Age mine road and an unimproved powerline service road on the west. Major access from the east and west is provided by State Route 62 and access from the north is provided by the Amboy Road.

Two species of hard clams occur along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of North America: the southern hard clam, Mercenaria campechiensis Gmelin 1791, and the northern hard clam, ~lercenaria mercenaria Linne 1758 (Wells 1957b). The latter species, also commonly kno\\'m as the quahog, was formerly named Venus mercenaria. The two species are closely related, produce viable hybrids (Menzel and Menzel 1965), and may be a single species.
