Rocks of the study area are greenschist-facies metasandstone, meta-arkose, metagraywacke, and dark slate of the Ocoee Supergroup of late Precambrian age. A major thrust fault, correlated with the Greenbrier Fault, separates fine-grained slaty rocks of the Snowbird Group on the northwest side, from coarse clastic sediments and interbedded slates of the Great Smoky Group on the southeast. North- and northeast-trending folds are common in the map area. Minor deposits of Quaternary sand and gravel occur locally in the lower parts of large streams.</p><p>Semiquantitative spectrographic, atomic absorption, and selected fire assay analyses were done on more than 200 samples of rock, soil, and stream sediment. No significant metal anomalies were found for 31 major, minor, and trace elements. In many places, metasiltstone and metasandstone contain trace amounts of chalcopyrite and sphalerite as microscopic intergrowths with the chief sulfide minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfides make up as much as 5 to 10 percent of some rocks and provide concentrations of Cu, Zn, and As slightly higher than background in samples of rock and soil. Rocks containing these disseminated base-metal sulfides are of insufficient grade to have current economic potential, however.</p><p>No metallic mineral resources are known within the proposed Big Frog Wilderness. Nonmetallic resources, including slate and&nbsp; phyllite, stone, and sand and gravel are present locally, but are not presently a value because similar resources exist closer to markets outside the study area. These deposits therefore would have only marginal use in the region.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791209","usgsCitation":"Slack, J.F., Gazdik, G.C., and Dunn, M., 1979, Mineral resources of the Big Frog Wilderness Study Area, Polk County, Tennessee and Fannin County, Georgia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1209, iv, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791209.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p.","costCenters":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":144688,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1209/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":422792,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1209/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Georgia, Tennessee","county":"Fannin County, Polk County","otherGeospatial":"Big Frog Wilderness Study Area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -84.5580,\n              34.9830\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.4850,\n              34.9830\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.4850,\n              35.058104573869024\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.5580,\n              35.058104573869024\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.5580,\n              34.9830\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b08e4b07f02db69b2f5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Slack, John F. 0000-0001-6600-3130 jfslack@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6600-3130","contributorId":1032,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Slack","given":"John","email":"jfslack@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":162697,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gazdik, Gertrude C.","contributorId":56220,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gazdik","given":"Gertrude","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162699,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dunn, Maynard L.","contributorId":40225,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunn","given":"Maynard L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162698,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The gossans, derived from sulfides, are ordinarily found at contacts between marble lenses and metavolcanic-metasedimentary rocks, but in the southern part of the mined area, gossans are also within marbles. The gossans are generally lensoidal and discontinuous along strike. The same type of metallization, in similar rocks, was found at the Hemair ancient workings, about 3 km southeast. Both deposits are thought to be of epigenetic origin, and ore deposition was controlled by shearing along marble contacts. Drilling is recommended at Farah Garan. \r\n\r\nAl Ashyab is 4 km south of Farah Garan, and similar rocks and structures extend through both areas but there are no ancient workings at Al Ashyab. The dominant geologic feature in the area is a high, narrow, light-colored ridge consisting of intensely silicified quartz porphyry. Pyritized metavolcanic rocks envelope the silicified rock, and geochemical sampling revealed weakly anomalous, erratically spaced concentrations of copper and zinc within these rocks. No further work is recommended for the area.\r\n\r\nQuartz-filled fractures containing gold were mapped at Al Asharfat, Lejourah, and other locations where ancient miners worked the veins. The gold-bearing quartz veins are narrow and have short strike lengths, and potential tonnages are thought to be small. The veins are in younger, more massive rocks than the enclosing metamorphic rocks and are thought to be younger than the adjacent sulfide deposits. No further work is recommended. \r\n\r\nPyritized zones and associated sparse copper oxides extend intermittently about 6 km south of Hemair in metasedimentary rocks of the Jiddah group. Similar zones, associated quartz vein swarms, and minor magnetite and gold are found in mafic metavolcanic rocks adjacent to the contact with quartz porphyry about 1 km west of Al Asharfat. Further study of these areas is recommended.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791659","usgsCitation":"Smith, C.W., and Blank, H.R., 1979, Ancient mines of the Farah Garan area, southwestern Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1659, v, 56 p., [5] fold. leaves of plates :maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;28 cm.; (63 p., 7 over-size sheets - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791659.","productDescription":"v, 56 p., [5] fold. leaves of plates :maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;28 cm.; (63 p., 7 over-size sheets - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144476,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1659/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38966,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1659/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38967,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1659/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38968,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1659/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c295","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, C. During a short visit to the headquarters of the Interstate Commission for the Araguaia-Tocantins Valley and to several stream-gaging stations in June 1964, the author reviewed the status of the streamflow and meteorological data-collection programs in relation to the streamflow and meteorological data-collection programs in relation to the pressing needs of development project studies. To provide data for areal and project-site studies and for main-stream sites, an initial network of 33 stream gaging stations was proposed, including the 7 stations then in operation. Suggestions were made in regard to operations, staffing and equipment. Organizational responsibilities for operations were found to be divided uncertainly. The Brazilian Meteorological Service had 15 synoptic stations in operation in and near the basin, some in need of reconditioning. Plans were at hand for the addition of 15 sites to the synoptic network and for limited data collection at 27 other sites. The author proposed collection of precipitation data at about 50 other locations to achieve a more representative areal distribution. Temperature, evaporation, and upper-air data sites were suggested to enhance the prospective hydrometeorological studies. The aquifer underlying the lower reaches of the valley comprises recent lava flows. Fresh groundwater occurs in the aquifer as a thin basal lens, which discharges as diffuse seeps along the shore. Measured basal-water heads were 1.3 and 2.4 feet at respective distances of 600 and 3,500 feet from the shore. Chemical analyses of groundwater samples indicate that the water is potable. Wells to develop the basal water should be located at least 1,000 feet from shore. This effect is believed to be due to the increased radiation in the ore coupled with the faster rate of fading of low-temperature thermoluminescence compared to high-temperature thermoluminescence. Both the ratios of thermoluminescent responses from any of a variety of temperature ranges and glow curves (plots of intensity of thermoluminescence versus temperature) can be used to detect the increased importance of high-temperature thermoluminescence relative to low-temperature thermoluminescence of previously mineralized samples. Both ratios and glow curves present a systematic pattern around this deposit; these patterns may have application in uranium prospecting.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79774","usgsCitation":"Spirakis, C.S., 1979, Interpretation of thermoluminescence patterns around a Wyoming roll-type uranium deposit: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-774, ii, 22 p. :graphs ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79774.","productDescription":"ii, 22 p. :graphs ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143267,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0774/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39088,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0774/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dae4b07f02db5e00df","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spirakis, Charles S.","contributorId":97111,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spirakis","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162869,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This caldera formed 22 m.y. ago in response to ash-flow eruptions of the Delano Peak Tuff Member of the Bullion Canyon Volcanics. Little, if any, mineralization took place during or shortly after caldera subsidence, but subsequent geologic events produced several environments that seem favorable for the occurrence of uranium deposits. This brief report outlines the geologic framework of these environments and is intended to serve as a guide for more detailed investigations and possible exploration of the more favorable areas.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79527","usgsCitation":"Steven, T.A., Cunningham, C.G., and Anderson, J.J., 1979, Uranium potential of the Big John Caldera, Beaver County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-527, i, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79527.","productDescription":"i, 16 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413679,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0527/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143150,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0527/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Beaver County","otherGeospatial":"Big John Caldera","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.03822015015407,\n              38.44723406161984\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.03822015015407,\n              37.955283138195355\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.6077075637296,\n              37.955283138195355\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.6077075637296,\n              38.44723406161984\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.03822015015407,\n              38.44723406161984\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db6053f2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steven, Thomas August","contributorId":73174,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steven","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"August","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162956,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cunningham, Charles G.","contributorId":85940,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cunningham","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162958,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Anderson, John J.","contributorId":74004,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162957,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

GNAP calculates ClPW norms, Thornton and Tuttle's differentiation index, Barth's cations, Niggli values and values for variables defined by the user. Calculated values can be displayed graphically in X-Y plots or ternary diagrams. Plotting can be done on a line printer or Calcomp plotter with either weight percent or mole percent data. Modifications in the original program give the user some control over normative calculations for each sample. The number of user-defined variables that can be created from the data has been increased from ten to fifteen. Plotting and calculations can be based on the original data, data adjusted to sum to 100 percent, or data adjusted to sum to 100 percent without water. Analyses for which norms were previously not computable are now computed with footnotes that show excesses or deficiencies in oxides (or volatiles) not accounted for by the norm. This report contains a listing of the computer program, an explanation of the use of the program, and the two sample problems.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791237","usgsCitation":"Stuckless, J., and VanTrump, G., 1979, A revised version of Graphic Normative Analysis Program (GNAP) with examples of petrologic problem solving: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1237, 115 p. :ill. ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791237.","productDescription":"115 p. :ill. ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142503,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1237/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39185,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1237/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1fe4b07f02db6ab87b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stuckless, J. The storms of December 3-5 and December 7-10 produced record peak discharges in several areas throughout central and eastern Kentucky, resulting in damages of nearly 50 million dollars and the loss of five lives. This report summarizes data collected during the floods by the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, and other Federal and State agencies in Kentucky. The data include precipitation, streamflow, and water-quality data (including suspended sediment). Estimates of property damages in selected basins are also provided. The major geographic features included in the area are the Wasatch Plateau, Book Cliffs, San Rafael Swell, Price River basin, and a small part of the Green River basin (pl. 1). The area is defined by approximate drainage-divide boundaries in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs, by an arbitrary boundary on the south, and by the Utah-Colorado State line on the east.</p><p>The Wasatch Plateau-Book Cliffs area includes all the operating coal mines in Utah in 1978. Annual coal production in the area is expected to increase from the current (1978) rate of about 8 million tons to as much as 30 million tons within the next 10 years (J. W. Moffitt, U.S. Geological Survey, oral commun., 1978). Ground water is an important source of water supply in the area. As mining increases and mining-related municipalities grow, many sources of ground-water supply may be subjected to increased demands and possibly degradation of chemical quality.</p><p>Waddell, Vickers, Upton, and Contratto (1978) reported some ground- water data after a reconnaissance of part of the area. The purpose of this report, which was prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, is to present a more detailed compilation of ground-water-related data that were collected and compiled during October 1976 to March 1978. The report is designed to make the data available in an orderly and usable form for local and regional water managers and other users of water data.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","doi":"10.3133/ofr79915","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management","usgsCitation":"Sumsion, C.T., 1979, Selected coal-related ground-water data, Wasatch Plateau-Book Cliffs area, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-915, Report: iv, 25 p.; Plate: 32.38 in. x 25.50 in., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79915.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 25 p.; Plate: 32.38 in. x 25.50 in.","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":143132,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0915/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39193,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0915/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39194,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0915/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Book Cliffs, Wasatch Plateau","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685bd6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sumsion, C. The test well was drilled to determine the feasibility of disposing of liquid waste from the city's secondary treatment plant. Drilling of the test well began in July 1973 and was completed in November 1974. A conventional circulation mud-rotary drilling method was used to a depth of 1,146 feet below land surface and a reverse circulation air-lift method was used to a depth of 3,513 feet. The greatest chloride concentration of water withdrawn from the test well was 31,000 milligrams per liter. The test well, uncased and open to dolomitic limestone between 2,006 and 3,513 feet, yielded 392 gallons per minute with a drawdown of approximately 100 feet.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791275","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Sarasota, Florida","usgsCitation":"Sutcliffe, H., 1979, Hydrologic data from a deep test well, City of Sarasota, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1275, iv, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791275.","productDescription":"iv, 23 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":426514,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1275/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143160,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1275/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","city":"Sarasota","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.58973838071954,\n              27.407341986046987\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.58973838071954,\n              27.201821801783197\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.36561955593397,\n              27.201821801783197\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.36561955593397,\n              27.407341986046987\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.58973838071954,\n              27.407341986046987\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ce4b07f02db607ff0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sutcliffe, Horace Jr.","contributorId":96725,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sutcliffe","given":"Horace","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163021,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The model, as described, applies specifically to the Skokomish, Nisqually, and Cowlitz Rivers, in Washington State, and more generally to streams in other regions that derive seasonal runoff from melting snow. Thus the techniques demonstrated for these three drainage basins can be used as a guide for applying this method to other streams. Input to the computer program consists of daily averages of gaged runoff of these streams, and daily values of precipitation collected at Longmire, Kid Valley, and Cushman Dam. Predictions are based on estimates of the absolute storage of water, predominately as snow: storage is approximately equal to basin precipitation less observed runoff. A pre-forecast test season is used to revise the storage estimate and improve the prediction accuracy. To obtain maximum prediction accuracy for operational applications with this model , a systematic evaluation of several hydrologic and meteorologic variables is first necessary. Six input options to the computer program that control prediction accuracy are developed and demonstrated. Predictions of streamflow can be made at any time and for any length of season, although accuracy is usually poor for early-season predictions (before December 1) or for short seasons (less than 15 days). The coefficient of prediction (CP), the chief measure of accuracy used in this manual, approaches zero during the late autumn and early winter seasons and reaches a maximum of about 0.85 during the spring snowmelt season. Uranium occurs there as roll-type deposits in Tertiary sandstones. Alteration of the host sandstones related to the formation of the uranium deposits, is marked at the surface by a pronounced red coloration, which has long been used in the area as a prospecting guide. This report presents a characterization of alteration in the Crooks Gap area based upon (1) field observations of the extent and appearance of the alteration at the surface, (2) determination of the mineralogy and spectral reflectance characteristics of representative samples of altered and unaltered material in the laboratory, and (3) analysis of Landsat data of selected areas of altered and unaltered rocks. \r\n\r\nLaboratory spectrophot6metric data show that fresh, red-colored, altered rock has a strong absorption at 0.35 and 0.5 micrometers and a marked rise in reflectivity from 0.7 to 1.6 micrometers; weathered, red-colored, altered rock and Triassic red beds both show strong spectral absorption near 0.35 micrometers but have a relatively flat response from 0.7 to 1.6 micrometers. Landsat radiance values, simulated from the laboratory data, show that both altered rock and Triassic red beds are indicated by a high red-to-green ratio. This is in good agreement with actual satellite data over these rock types. These data indicate that the Landsat system is very sensitive to ferric oxides and can map the distribution of these oxides in semiarid environments for reconnaissance purposes.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79765","usgsCitation":"Townsend, T.E., 1979, Discrimination of alteration in the Crooks Gap, Wyoming, uranium district using laboratory and Landsat spectral reflectance data: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-765, iv, 73 p. :graphs, ill.
