Water levels and changes in water levels in these two aquifers differ greatly in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. The Mississippi, Minnesota, and St. Croix Rivers are in hydraulic connection with and influence the pattern of flow in the upper aquifer, the Prairie du Chien-Jordan. Water generally flows toward these streams from water-level highs northeast, northwest, and south of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Consequently, heavy pumping has caused only localized cones of depression in the potentiometric surface of this aquifer. In contrast, the Mount Simon-Hinckley, which has only a slight hydraulic connection to the streams, is greatly influenced by pumping. Pumping in the urban centers of Minneapolis and St. Paul has caused a large cone of depression in the Mount Simon-Hinckley potentiometric surface. During 1971, the measurable cone was centered in eastcentral Hennepin County, was about 25 miles in diameter, and was as much as 150 feet deep at its center.</p>\n<p>Between 1971 and 1980, average water levels in the Prairie du Chien-Jordan aquifer changed less than 5 feet in most of the study area, but rose or declined as much as 25 feet locally in response to pumpage and recharge. During this period, seasonal declines of water levels from winter to summer lessened, and the area where these declines exceeded 10 feet decreased.</p>\n<p>In contrast, between 1971 and 1980, average water levels in the Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer rose as much as 60 feet in the center of the cone of depression in response to decreased pumping. Also, the measurable cone of depression contracted from about 25 miles to about 15 miles in diameter. However, because of increased summer pumping due to below-average precipitation during 1980, seasonal water levels declined much more and over a wider area during 1980 than in 1971.</p>\n<p>Water-level data suggest that (1) little variation in annual pumpage between 1971 and 1980 from the Prairie du Chien-Jordan aquifer produced generally stable water levels in that aquifer, (2) decreased annual pumpage from the Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer from 1971 to 1980 caused water levels in that aquifer to rise, and (3) a greater seasonal component of pumpage from the Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer than from the Prairie du Chien-Jordan produced larger and more widespread seasonal water-level declines in the Mount Simon-Hinckley than in the Prairie du Chien-Jordan, Total magnetic intensity measurements were made along east-west flight lines about 0.5 mi apart and flown at an average altitude of 1,000 ft above the ground surface. A regional magnetic field (the International Geomagnetic Reference Field, 1975, updated to months flown) was removed from the data and a constant of 50,800 gammas was added to the adjusted total field intensity values.</p>\n<p>The roadless area includes the upper part of Fossil Creek and its northeastern tributaries in Sandrock Canyon and Calf Pen Canyon. The extremely rugged canyon of Fossil Creek is in several places more than 1,500 ft deep. Elevation of the canyon floor ranges from 4,600 ft near the mouth of Calf Pen Canyon to 3,500 ft at the southwest end of the area. Peaks and ridges on the uplands bordering the canyons range in elevation from 5,300 ft west of Fossil Springs to 6,900 ft in the northeastern part of the area. Maximum topographic relief along these uplands is less than 200 ft.</p>\n<p>The Fossil Springs Roadless Area is underlain by more than 3,000 ft of Paleozoic rocks consisting mostly of sandstone, shale, dolomite, and limestone. West of Fossil Springs and along most of the border of the area, these rocks are generally overlain by late Tertiary volcanic rocks, mainly basaltic lavas and pyroclastic deposits. Quaternary alluvial, colluvial, landslide, and travertine deposits overlie large parts of the country rock in the canyons. In the southwestern part of the area, the volcanic rocks are more than 2,000 ft thick. Along the northwest and northeast margins, these rocks are 300-400 ft thick.</p>\n<p>The prevailing dip of the Paleozoic strata is low to the north or northeast. The dominant homoclinal structure is interrupted by several fault blocks, in which the strata dip westward or southward. All the faults are high-angle normal faults and have displacements commonly ranging from about 50 to 400 ft. Although fault relations are obscure within the volcanic sequence, many faults seem to displace the volcanic rocks less than the underlying Paleozoic rocks. The volcanic rocks, which rest unconformably on the Paleozoic strata, are flat lying in the northern part of the map area, but west of Fossil Springs they dip gently southwestward. The ancestral Mogollon Rim, a north-northwest-trending escarpment of Paleozoic rocks now concealed by Tertiary volcanic rocks lies near Fossil Springs (Twenter, 1962).</p>\n<p>The magnetic anomalies and patterns on the aeromagnetic map reflect variations of magnetization in the underlying rocks. Basaltic rocks contain moderate amounts of magnetic minerals, mainly magnetite, and possess strong intensities of magnetization. The more silicic volcanic rocks have much lower magnetization intensities. Earthquake magnitudes were redetermined as necessary to make them as consistent as possible with the Gutenberg methods and results, which necessarily make up much of the data base. Measurement errors were estimated for the three variables for 58 moderate to large shallow-focus earthquakes. Regression analyses were then made utilizing the estimated measurement errors. \r\nThe regression analysis demonstrates that the relations among the variables magnitude, length, and displacement are stochastic in nature. The stochastic variance, introduced in part by incomplete surface expression of seismogenic faulting, variation in shear modulus, and regional factors, dominates the estimated measurement errors. Thus, it is appropriate to use ordinary least squares for the regression models, rather than regression models based upon an underlying deterministic relation with the variance resulting from measurement errors. \r\n\r\nSignificant differences exist in correlations of certain combinations of length, displacement, and magnitude when events are qrouped by fault type or by region, including attenuation regions delineated by Evernden and others. Subdivision of the data results in too few data for some fault types and regions, and for these only regressions using all of the data as a group are reported. \r\n\r\nEstimates of the magnitude and the standard deviation of the magnitude of a prehistoric or future earthquake associated with a fault can be made by correlating M with the logarithms of rupture length, fault displacement, or the product of length and displacement. Fault rupture area could be reliably estimated for about 20 of the events in the data set. Regression of MS on rupture area did not result in a marked improvement over regressions that did not involve rupture area. The base of the Del Rio Clay is the most frequently picked contact because it is the top of the Edwards aquifer and also because it is easily identified on either gamma-ray or electric logs.</p>\n<p>Other important formation contacts identified were the Austin Group, the Eagle Ford Group, the Buda Limestone, and the Glen Rose Formation.
