The primary purpose of that investigation was to provide the geohydrological understanding needed to predict the impact of potential phosphate industry operations in the forest on the natural hydrologic system. The investigation involved test drilling, implementation of a hydrologic monitoring network, water-quality sampling, comprehensive aquifer tests, and literature study. The numerous data obtained from the field investigations, laboratory analyses, and published and unpublished sources were published in summary form in an interpretive report (Miller and others, 1978, Impact of potential phosphate mining on the hydrology of Osceola National Forest, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations 78-6, 159 p.). This report is an index to the type, source, location, and availability of the data used in the interpretive investigation. The report indexes the following water-resources data: geological, geophysical, ground water, surface water, quality of water, meteorological, climatological, aquifer tests, maps, photographs, elevations, and reference publications. In addition, there is </span><span>excessive shoaling in some navigation channels, saltwater intrusion into </span><span>usually fresh estuarine reaches, too-high or too-low salinities in </span><span>nursery areas for various estuarine species, and flood damage due to </span><span>hurricanes. </span></p><p><span>The Cape Fear River is the only major North Carolina estuary having a direct connection to the sea. Short-term flow throughout most of its length is dominated by ocean tides. The estuarine reaches of the Neuse-Trent, Tar-Pamlico, Chowan, and Roanoke River systems are at least partly shielded from the effects of ocean tides by the Outer Banks and the broad expanses of Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. With the probable exception of the Roanoke River, winds are usually the dominant short-term current-producing force in these estuaries and in most of Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. </span></p><p><span>Freshwater entering the major estuaries is, where not contaminated, of acceptable quality for drinking with minimum treatment. However, iron concentrations in excess of 0.3 milligrams per liter sometimes occur and water draining from swampy areas along the Coastal Plain is often highly colored, but these problems may be remedied with proper treatment. Nuisance-level algal blooms have been a recurring problem on the lower estuarine reaches of the Neuse, Tar-Pamlico, and Chowan rivers where nutrients (compounds of phosphorous and nitrogen) are abundant. The most destructive blooms tend to occur in the summer months during periods of low freshwater discharge and relatively high water temperatures. </span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Rainfall in excess of 30 inches was unofficially reported at several locations, while the highest 24-hour amount recorded by the National&middot;Weather Service was 29.05 inches at Albany in Shackelford County.</p>\n<p>Major flooding occurred on the Medina River and triputaries above Medina Lake and on the Guadalupe River and tributaries above Canyon Lake. Minor to severe flooding occurred on the tributaries of the Nueces River, on the Clear Fork Brazos River and tributaries, and on the Llano and Pedernales Rivers, which are tributaries of the Colorado River.</p>\n<p>Peak discharges at several streamflow stations exceeded the historic peaks, and the flood magnitude and frequency data for the Guadalupe River above Canyon Lake, the Medina River near Pipe Creek, and Clear Fork Brazos River indicate that the August 1978 flood had a recurrence interval in excess of 100 years. The coal beds are mainly in the lower 150 feet (45 m) of the Fruitland Formation. Coal resources--measured, indicated, and inferred--with less than 400 feet (120 m) of overburden in the site are 69,085,000 short tons (62,660,100 metric tons), 369,078,000 short tons (334,754,000 metric tons), and 177,803,000 short tons (161,267,000 metric tons) respectively. About 68 percent of these resources are overlain by 200 feet (60 m) or less of overburden. The apparent rank of the coal ranges from subbituminous B to subbituminous A. The average Btu/lb value of 14 core samples from the site on the as-received basis is 8,240 (4580 Kcal/kg), average ash content is 23.4 percent, and average sulfur content is 0.5 percent. Pumping-test data show that the fracture system is interconnected to distances more than 1,000 feet from the wells. Recharge occurs through overlying clayey till, and continuous pumping may induce recharge from surface-water sources. Chemical analyses indicate no water-quality problems. Systematic collection of data on pumpage , water level, and chemical quality could help to determine the long-term adequacy of the aquifer system. Estimated water-surface elevations during a 100-year flood indicate virtually all the flow would be contained in the river channel. Since 1914, Cedar River flows have been affected by impoundment and release of storage from Chester Morse Lake at river mile 35.6, and since 1901 by diversion for water supply at river mile 21.6. Flood-frequency analysis, based on 62 years of regulated flows (period 1915-76), indicate the 100-year flood would have a discharge of 8,600 cubic feet per second at river mile 23.4 and 6,870 cubic feet per second at river mile 33.2. The highest flood since regulation began occurred December 3 and 4, 1975, and was 7,930 cubic feet per second at river mile 23.4 and 6,860 cubic feet per second at river mile 33.2. The aquifer system crops out in a band 5 to 10 miles wide, that trends southeast across the State from the Warren-Yazoo County line to northeastern Wayne County. In the northwest part of the area, the formations dip to the southwest at 12 feet per mile. At the southeastern end of the outcrop, the dip is 42 feet per mile. The average dip for the entire area is 30 feet per mile. The aquifers are of primary importance for domestic and farm use. Total withdrawal in 1977 was about 1.4 million gallons per day. Since 1963 water levels have declined an average of between 0.05 and 2 feet per year. Water quality is generally good although in some places there are objectionably high concentrations of iron and color. Freshwater in Pleistocene sand and gravel deposits is the source of supply for nearly 100 municipal and thousands of private domestic wells. Most ground water on Cape Cod is of good chemical quality for drinking and other uses. It is characteristically low in dissolved solids and is soft. In 90 percent of the samples analyzed, dissolved solids were less than 100 mg/l (milligrams per liter) and pH was less than 7.0. Highway deicing salt, sea-water flooding due to storms , and saltwater intrusion due to ground-water withdrawal are sources of sodium chloride contamination. Chloride concentrations have increased from 20 to 140 mg/l, owing to saltwater intrusion at Provincetown 's wells in Truro. In Yarmouth, contaminated ground water near a salt-storage area contained as much as 1,800 mg/l chloride. Heavy metals, insecticides, and herbicides were not found at concentrations above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 's recommended limits for public drinking-water supplies, but iron and manganese in some samples exceeded those limits. Ninety percent of 84 samples analyzed for nitrate reported as nitrogen contained less than 1.3 mg/l and 80 percent contained 0.5 mg/l or less of nitrate as nitrogen. Water containing nitrogen in excess of 0.5 mg/l has probably been affected by municipal or domestic sewage or fertilizer, and water with less than this amount may have been affected by them. The moat portions of the caldera complex were subsequently filled with tuffaceous sediments. Late in the caldera development near-surface intrusives and domes were emplaced along the margins of the complex and mineralized with uranium. Seven large hydrothermal systems developed at this time and formed large areas of alteration within the caldera-fill volcanics and sediments. A digital model calibrated to conditions in West Fork Blue River was used to predict alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows.</p><p>Alternative waste loads that would permit instream dissolved-oxygen concentrations of at least 5.0 milligrams per liter for West Fork Blue River in Washington County, Ind., were determined. All point-source waste loads that potentially impact West Fork Blue River are in the town of Salem. The Salem municipal wastewater-treatment facility is the only facility in the modeled reach that has a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit to discharge organic waste.</p><p>In-stream dissolved-oxygen concentration averaged 96.5 percent of saturation at selected sites on West Fork Blue River during two 24-hour summer surveys. This high dissolved-oxygen concentration reflects small carbonaceous and nitrogenous waste loads, adequate dilution of waste by the stream, and natural reaeration. Nonpoint source waste loads accounted for an average of 53.2 percent of the total carbonaceous biochemical-oxygen demand and 90.2 percent of the nitrogenous biochemical-oxygen demand.</p><p>Waste-load assimilation was studied for both summer and annual 7-day, 10-year low flow. Natural streamflow for these conditions was zero, so no benefit from dilution was provided. The projected reaeration capacity of the stream was not sufficient to maintain at least 5 milligrams per liter dissolved oxygen in the stream with current waste-discharge restrictions. Consequently, during low flows, advanced waste treatment (nitrification-denitrification) or some other form of ammonia removal may be necessary to meet current Indiana stream water-quality standards for ammonia and dissolved oxygen. During winter low flow, ammonia toxicity, rather than dissolved-oxygen concentration, was the limiting water-quality criterion downstream from the Salem wastewater-treatment
