the Cedar River, King County, Washington","docAbstract":"Flood profiles on the Cedar River, King County, Wash., were developed from 21.1 to 33.65 miles upstream from the mouth for the flood of December 3-4, 1975, and for a 100-year flood. Estimated water-surface elevations during a 100-year flood indicate virtually all the flow would be contained in the river channel. Since 1914, Cedar River flows have been affected by impoundment and release of storage from Chester Morse Lake at river mile 35.6, and since 1901 by diversion for water supply at river mile 21.6. Flood-frequency analysis, based on 62 years of regulated flows (period 1915-76), indicate the 100-year flood would have a discharge of 8,600 cubic feet per second at river mile 23.4 and 6,870 cubic feet per second at river mile 33.2. The highest flood since regulation began occurred December 3 and 4, 1975, and was 7,930 cubic feet per second at river mile 23.4 and 6,860 cubic feet per second at river mile 33.2. Recurrence interval of this flood is about 70 years at river mile 23.4 and about 100 years at mile 33.2 under present conditions of storage and regulation.

Based on results of analyses from 26 wells, water from 21 of the wells contained excessive concentrations of one or more constituents. Drinking water standards were exceeded for fluoride in water from 2 wells, nitrate plus nitrite in 2 wells, dissolved solids in 1 well, iron in 6 wells, manganese in 8 wells, zinc in 2 wells, coliform bacteria in 4 wells, gross alpha radiation in 11 wells and possibly 4 more, and gross beta radiation possibly in 1 well. Local variations in concentrations of 15 chemical constituents, specific conductance, and water temperature were statistically significant. Specific conductance increased significantly during 1973-75 only in the vicinity of Indian Hills. Annual range in depths to water in 11 observation wells varied from 1 to 15 feet. The shallowest water levels were recorded in late winter, usually in February. The deepest water levels occurred during summer or fall, depending on the well and the year. Three-year trends in water level changes in 6 of the 11 wells indicated decreasing water storage in the aquifer. The aquifer underlying the lower reaches of the valley comprises recent lava flows. Fresh groundwater occurs in the aquifer as a thin basal lens, which discharges as diffuse seeps along the shore. Measured basal-water heads were 1.3 and 2.4 feet at respective distances of 600 and 3,500 feet from the shore. Chemical analyses of groundwater samples indicate that the water is potable. Wells to develop the basal water should be located at least 1,000 feet from shore. Well penetration should be limited to the upper half of the basal lens, and drawdown caused by pumping should not be greater than half of the head above sea level in order to avoid the risk of contamination by underlying saline water.

Samples were collected over the period 1969-1976 at approximately six-week intervals at 36 stations. The stations were located along the axis of the Bay from Calaveras Point in South San Francisco Bay to the town of Rio Vista on the Sacramento River. On most cruises vertical profiles of the water properties were taken at 12 of the 36 stations. The samples were analyzed for the following core parameters: salinity, temperature, light transmission, chlorophyll a fluorescence, dissolved oxygen, orthophosphate, nitrate+nitrite, nitrite, ammonia, and silicate. Other analyses performed on selected samples included: particulate organic carbon, alkalinity, pH, pCO2, and suspended particulate weight. The results of these analyses and the analytical methods used are documented in this report.

A pumping depression exists upgradient from the reservation, and water levels have declined an average of 1.0 to 1.5 feet per year since the 1940's. This decline in the water level has led to the cessation of perennial flow in Zanja de Cota Creek that traverses the reservation. In the past this creek was fed by the natural discharge of water from the ground-water basin. Water-bearing rock beneath the reservation is limited in thickness and may become unusable as a water supply source in the near future if water levels continue to decline.
The chemical quality of water beneath the reservation is generally acceptable for both irrigation and domestic use; however, large-scale pumping could induce the flow of contaminated water from an area just upgradient.
Declines in ground-water levels and the existence of fecal contamination upgradient from the reservation make the successful development of a groundwater supply for the reservation doubtful.

This report is an index to the type, source, location, and availability of the data used in the interpretive investigation. The report indexes the following water-resources data: geological, geophysical, ground water, surface water, quality of water, meteorological, climatological, aquifer tests, maps, photographs, elevations, and reference publications. The report also describes the manner of storage and retrieval of the data.

In addition, there is excessive shoaling in some navigation channels, saltwater intrusion into usually fresh estuarine reaches, too-high or too-low salinities in nursery areas for various estuarine species, and flood damage due to hurricanes.
The Cape Fear River is the only major North Carolina estuary having a direct connection to the sea. Short-term flow throughout most of its length is dominated by ocean tides. The estuarine reaches of the Neuse-Trent, Tar-Pamlico, Chowan, and Roanoke River systems are at least partly shielded from the effects of ocean tides by the Outer Banks and the broad expanses of Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. With the probable exception of the Roanoke River, winds are usually the dominant short-term current-producing force in these estuaries and in most of Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds.
Freshwater entering the major estuaries is, where not contaminated, of acceptable quality for drinking with minimum treatment. However, iron concentrations in excess of 0.3 milligrams per liter sometimes occur and water draining from swampy areas along the Coastal Plain is often highly colored, but these problems may be remedied with proper treatment. Nuisance-level algal blooms have been a recurring problem on the lower estuarine reaches of the Neuse, Tar-Pamlico, and Chowan rivers where nutrients (compounds of phosphorous and nitrogen) are abundant. The most destructive blooms tend to occur in the summer months during periods of low freshwater discharge and relatively high water temperatures.

The known occurrences of uranium and anomalous radioactivity in these rocks are associated with sediments that accumulated in a low energy environment characterized by fine-grained clastics, including important tuffaceous materials, and carbonate rocks. Most uranium occurrences, in these rocks appear to be stratabound. \r\n\r\nEmphasis was placed on those sedimentary materials that pre-date the late Cenozoic Basin and Range disturbance. They are deformed and crop out on pedimented range blocks and along the province interface with the Transition Zone. Three tentative age groups are recognized: Group I - Oligocene, pre-22 m.y., Group II - early Miocene - 22 m.y. - 16 m.y., and Group III - middle Miocene - 16 m.y. to 13--10 m.y. Regionally, these three groups contain both coarse to fine-grained red clastics and low energy lighter colored 'lacustrine' phases. \r\n\r\nEach of the three groups has been the object of uranium exploration. Group II, the early Miocene strata, embraces the Anderson Mine - Artillery region host rocks and also the New River - Cave Creek early Miocene beds-along the boundary with the Transition Zone. \r\n\r\nThese three groups of rocks have been tectonically deformed to the extent that original basins of deposition cannot yet be reconstructed. However, they were considerably more extensive in size than the late Cenozoic basins the origin of which deformed the former.\r\n\r\nGroup II rocks are judged to be of prime interest because of: (1) the development and preservation of organic matter in varying lithologies, (2) apparent contemporaneity with silicic volcanic centers, (3) influence of Precambrian crystalline rocks, and (4) relative outcrop continuity near the stable Transition Zone.
