Data from these wells were stud-</span><span>ied to determine aquifer materials, yield, well depth and depth to </span><span>water. </span></p><p><span>The aquifer material is unconsolidated glacial or alluvial gravel and sand and bedrock from the McHugh Complex, the unnamed metamorphic complex and the Kenai Formation. The median well yield for bedrock wells is 2 gallons per minute and the median well yield for wells completed in unconsolidated aquifers is 10 gallons per minute. Well depths may vary widely where wells are drilled into bedrock or glacial till but are more uniform where wells are drilled into alluvial gravels and sand. The area depends mainly on ground water for irrigation, and in 1976 about 966,000 acre-feet of ground water was pumped from the area. As a result of the large-scale long-term withdrawal of ground water, water levels have declined , and the direction of ground-water flow has changed. Since 1923 , declines of nearly 500 feet have occurred near Stanfield. Information shown on the maps (scale 1:125,000) includes depth to water, altitude of the water level, specific conductance, fluoride concentration, change in water level (1923-77), and land use. In addition, there is </span><span>excessive shoaling in some navigation channels, saltwater intrusion into </span><span>usually fresh estuarine reaches, too-high or too-low salinities in </span><span>nursery areas for various estuarine species, and flood damage due to </span><span>hurricanes. </span></p><p><span>The Cape Fear River is the only major North Carolina estuary having a direct connection to the sea. Short-term flow throughout most of its length is dominated by ocean tides. The estuarine reaches of the Neuse-Trent, Tar-Pamlico, Chowan, and Roanoke River systems are at least partly shielded from the effects of ocean tides by the Outer Banks and the broad expanses of Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. With the probable exception of the Roanoke River, winds are usually the dominant short-term current-producing force in these estuaries and in most of Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. </span></p><p><span>Freshwater entering the major estuaries is, where not contaminated, of acceptable quality for drinking with minimum treatment. However, iron concentrations in excess of 0.3 milligrams per liter sometimes occur and water draining from swampy areas along the Coastal Plain is often highly colored, but these problems may be remedied with proper treatment. Nuisance-level algal blooms have been a recurring problem on the lower estuarine reaches of the Neuse, Tar-Pamlico, and Chowan rivers where nutrients (compounds of phosphorous and nitrogen) are abundant. The most destructive blooms tend to occur in the summer months during periods of low freshwater discharge and relatively high water temperatures. </span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Approximately 1,000 of the lakes are listed by 7.5-minute quadrangle topographic-map name, lake-identification number, latitude and longitude, and county. Other data given are shape of lake, maximum length, mean width, length and development of shoreline, surface area, orientation, presence of a stream inlet or outlet, and geologic data (geologic formation of area surrounding the lake and the mined coal-bed member). Field data (sampling date, pH, specific conductance, apparent color of lake, and general vegetation along the shoreline) were collected for 287 of the lakes.\r\n\r\nTwo hundred eighty-seven lakes were sampled once for pH and specific conductance. Vegetation along the shoreline and apparent color of each lake were identified at the same time. Although these data are not sufficient to quantify the water quality of the lakes, they do illustrate the variability of these characteristics. The pH of the 287 lakes ranged from 2.5 to 10.0; however, the pH of 80 percent of them ranged from 6 to 9. Specific conductance ranged from 99 to 3,800 micromhos per centimeter at 25? Celsius. Specific conductance for approximately 70 percent of the lakes in the Staunton and Brazil formations was less than 500 micromhos per centimeter at 25? Celsius, but for approximately 65 percent in the Dugger and Petersburg Formations it was greater than 1,000 micromhos per centimeter at 25? Celsius. The apparent colors of the lakes observed were varying shades of aqua, blue, brown, lime green, red, and green. Eighty percent of the lakes sampled were green.\r\n\r\nLake sizes ranged from a chosen minimum of 0.5 acre to a maximum of 344 acres. One stratum of Santonian age near the base of the Galembo Member of the La Luna Formation crops out at many places in the Departments of Santander and Norte de Santander and may be of commercial grade. This stratum is more than one meter thick at several places near Lebrija and near Sardinata, farther south it is locally one meter thick or more near the base of the Guadalupe Formation in the Department of Boyaca. Other phosphorite beds are found at higher stratigraphic levels in the Galembo Member and the Guadalupe Formation, and at some places these may be commercial also. A stratigraphically lower phosphorite occurs below the Galembo Member in the Capacho Formation (Cenomanian age) in at least one area near the town of San Andres, Santander. A phosphorite or pebbly phosphate conglomerate derived from erosion of the Galembo Member forms the base of the Umir Shale and the equivalent Colon Shale at many places.\r\n\r\nDeposition of the apatite took place upon the continental shelf in marine water of presumed moderate depth between the Andean geosyncline and near-shore detrital deposits adjacent to the Guayana shield. Preliminary calculations indicate phosphorite reserves of approximately 315 million metric tons in 9 areas, determined from measurements of thickness, length of the outcrop, and by projecting the reserves to a maximum of 1,000 meters down the dip of the strata into the subsurface. The location of the headwater of each is given with reference to cultural and topographic features. ' Headwater ' in this report is defined as the first site downstream from which the average streamflow is 5 cubic feet per second. The site locations were determined from drainage areas as indicated on topographic maps. The size of the drainage area required to produce an average flow of 5 cubic feet per second was determined from equations, developed separately for each State by regression techniques, that define the relation between streamflow and hydrologic factors of the region. Drainage area and precipitation were factors in the equations for all three States: forest cover was found to be significant in Ohio. Results of the investigation provide peak-flow data on streams generally with drainage areas less than 50 square miles, placing particular emphasis on those with drainage areas less than 10 square miles. Basin parameters being investigated for their effect on floods are drainage area, length of main stream, slope of main channel, basin altitude, forest cover, and storage area. All the 163 gaging stations included in the report are equipped with crest-stage gages, and 10 stations are equipped to record stage and precipitation continuously. The relative magnitude of flood flows for different hydrologic regions is shown in graphs that relate maximum discharge to drainage area. Station records contain location, drainage area, records available, type of gage, on-site structure elevations, bankfull stage, and annual maximum stage and discharge data.
